NBC won the most viewers overall and within the 18-49 demographic due to the year’s last installment of Sunday Night Football (NBC will however be carrying the playoff games this coming Saturday afternoon and evening) featuring a matchup between the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts. As expected, Peyton Manning didn’t play much in a game that wasn’t very meaningful for the Colts, but over 14 million watched anyway. It was meaningful for the Titans who needed the win to make the playoffs. Kerry Collins came off the bench and led the Titans to a rally that sent them to the playoffs. Football overrun on CBS and FOX also scored good numbers. Meanwhile, lots of repeats and the annual airing of The Sound of Music on ABC. Here are the details:

The New England Patriots’ successful closure of the perfect 16-0 season was watched by more than 25 million people between 8pm and 11pm and that’s just via the broadcast simulcast on NBC and CBS — we haven’t seen how many watched on the NFL Network yet. The game combined for 25.37 million viewers and an 8.5/25 (rating/share) in the 18-49 demographic. More people watched the game on CBS than NBC, though it was fairly even.
Update 12/31: The game drew an additional 9.2 million via the NFL Network bringing the total to 34.5 million viewers for the game.

It was a night of mixed leadership with CBS taking the most viewers and Fox and NBC sharing the 18-49 demo honors. Mostly repeats from CBS and ABC, with a dash of The Singing Bee and Dateline thrown in from NBC. A new 20/20 ran on ABC. The CW’s Friday Night Smackdown! performed respectably. Over on FOX was a repeat of the movie Bruce Almighty. Full details:

The stage was set for a night of repeats on ABC, CBS and NBC and the movie Ice Age on FOX. CBS won every single half hour of the evening. The 9pm repeat airing of CSI almost had as many viewers as ABC, NBC and The CW combined. See for yourself:

Although ESPN does “syndicate” Monday Night Football back to the local markets of the teams playing in the game so it can be viewed by those in the local markets without cable or satellite, the viewer number indicated seems to be for total viewers of Monday Night Football including those who watched on ESPN.
We’re not exactly sure why Nielsen reports it this way, but since they are, we are too.
DAD = Disney ABC Domestic Television, SPT= Sony Pictures Television, 2/T=Twentieth Television, C/P =CBS Paramount Television, ESP = ESPN, CTD = Columbia TriStar Domestic.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football was again the number one program by a long shot, but notable second and third place finishers were MTV’s Shot at Love: Tila Tequila and VH1’s I Love New York 2. WWE RAW sewed up the fourth and fifth spots, with the sixth spot going to the NFL Network’s Dallas Cowboys vs. Carolina Panthers matchup last Saturday. Holiday cable net movie staple, The Santa Clause and SpongeBob rounded out the top 10.
