CSI

The EYE network takes both total viewers and 18-49 categories on the strength of Survivor and CSI.

-Total Viewers:
CBS: 18.58 million, ABC: 14.36, NBC: 9.37, Fox: 6.37, CW: 3.80

-Adults 18-49:
CBS: 5.8 rating/15 share, ABC: 5.7/15, NBC: 4.3/11, Fox: 1.9/ 5, CW: 1.4/ 4

Thursdays from 9p-10p surely was the most watched hour of broadcast television with CSI raking in 24.9m and Grey’s Anatomy adding another 20.5m. I’ll be interested to see the DVR totals for this night once we finally have them.

Nielsen Overnight TV Ratings, Wednesday, Sept 26

Posted on 27 September 2007 by Robert Seidman

Jane Seymour on Dancing with the Stars

ABC wins the night in both total viewers and 18-49 ratings on the strength of the Dancing with the Stars “Results Show” that had 16.6 million viewers and the premiere of Private Practice which pulled 14.2 million viewers.

CBS came in second on total viewers and NBC took second with the 18-49 crowd. Viewers are already fading away for CBS’ Kid Nation which pulled 7.6 million viewers. Kid Nation’s premier last week pulled 9.4 million viewers but the Tiffany network scores with Criminal Minds’ premier which had 12.7 million viewers.

Gorman isn’t admitting it, but I’m sure he was one of the 13.6 million watching the Bionic Woman over on NBC. [Gorman says: Nope! Too far behind on my recordings of The War]

Not a good night for Fox. Kitchen Nightmares decreased 1.2 million versus the previous week’s premeire. Giving the premiere away on iTunes? Cool for geeks like me, otherwise completely meaningless.

-Total Viewers:
ABC: 13.76 million, CBS: 11.01, NBC: 10.88, Fox: 6.14, CW: 3.70

-Adults 18-49:
ABC: 4.2 rating/11 share, NBC: 4.1/11, CBS: 3.3/ 9, Fox: 2.5/ 7, CW: 1.8/ 5.

Full night’s results available via Marc Berman/Mediaweek. The charts:

“Not so fast, NBC….” Nielsen Reconsiders TV Ratings Gambit

Posted on 27 September 2007 by Bill Gorman

Nielsen Media Research

The ink isn’t even dry on the new ratings gambit, and Nielsen’s already reconsidering it.

At a minimum, I’d look for a change so that any re-airings do count in the averages for the week and for the averages on the night they air. But if I had to wager, I’d say the entire scheme gets abandoned entirely. It’s too much of an advantage for certain networks/shows that air highly rated shows early in the weekand have really weak Saturdays [i.e. NBC, Heroes, Monday], and a disadvantage for those that air their highly rated shows late in the week [ABC, Extreme Makeover, Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters].

I think this was the case of paper pushers at the networks and/or ad agencies agreeing to these things last year without understanding the implications. Once put into effect, the programmers, first at NBC, saw the obvious opportunity and are using it in a way that was not anticipated.

It’s effectively the same way that syndicated ratings have been calculated for a long time, accumulating ratings across multiple airings each week. However, since most syndicated shows air M-F, there wasn’t any “gaming” opportunity there.

Note that our Sports Ratings combine both Broadcast and Cable sports, typically other reports do not, but it just makes sense to us.

NBC gets the Sunday NFL double-header game and an advantage this week. Football dominates with 16 of 20, and the first non-football show is the NASCAR race at #11. NBC has 5, Fox 4 and CBS and ABC with 3 each of the top 20.
