How bad is it? Last year’s NLCS on Fox between the New York Mets and St. Louis averaged 8.4 million viewers and a 5.7 household rating. This year through 3 games, TBS is averaging 4.5 million viewers and a 2.9 rating. This didn’t catch anyone off guard other than perhaps those who were still doe-eyed over TBS’ MLB League Division Series ratings which were pretty good. But TBS had New York, LA, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland and Philadeplphia in addition to Colorado and Arizona. Now Fox has the Red Sox/Indians and TBS is down to the Diamondbacks and Rockies.
Worse still, none of the series aired by TBS so far reached the maximum number of games. The Angels, Cubs and Phillies were all swept in three games and the Yankees only played in four games out of a possible 5.
The NLDS isn’t shaping up any better on that front either, with the juggernaut Rockies poised to sweep the Diamondbacks in four games.
Over on Fox, the ALCS between the Indians and Red Sox is averaging 8.2 million viewers (down 2% from last year) and a 5.3 rating (down 5% from last year). We are not surprised by the trend for the LCS games though it may be a little worse than anticipated. .
Update: 10/15 7:40pm PDT — Boston just went down in game 3 and now trails the Indians 2 games to 1. Mark me down for a World Series without the Red Sox = lowest World Series ratings ever. I want the ALCS to go 7 games, but a Rockies vs. Indians World Series wouldn’t bother me at all. Both the Rockies and the Indians are fun to watch. Plus it would be fun to see whether WWE Raw gets better ratings.

The Sawx aren’t on the brink just yet– though game 4 is big for the Tribe.
But the Rockies, now 7-0 in this year’s playoffs are going to their first World Series – they also get a nice little vacation. Their next game will be October 24 in either Cleveland or (Fox and MLB pray) Boston.
