We know there are some questions from the loyal Supernatural fanbase regarding how it’s doing ratings wise vs. Reaper and what is the impact of people watching via DVR for both shows. For the week of October 1-7, while Supernatural had a slightly bigger live audience, Reaper had almost twice as many viewers via DVR. No Reaper fans, I didn’t make that number up. Spooky!
| Week of Oct 1-7, 2007 | LIVE | LIVE+7 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reaper | 2712 | 3378 | 666 |
| Supernatural | 2849 | 3199 | 350 |

Interesting. Thank you for the information. I just wish that live plus seven actually counted when it comes to adverstisers’ rates and renewal decisions. Live plus three or C3 really rules the decision making. I figured there would be some DVR interest in Reaper during the first weeks. It got some decent buzz before the season. I’m impressed that Supernatural has gotten over 3 million live the second and third week. With CSI, The Office, and (the insipid) Grey’s Anatomay kicking ass even when it comes to DVR usage and adding over a million a piece, Thursdays at 9 truly is the timeslot nightmares are made of.

Also, Supernatural fans shouldn’t worry about comparing it to Reaper. Reaper’s just another show. It had a big push preseason. It’s not do or die for one or the other. Those numbers will probably fluctuate week to week. There’s room for all.

Galveston, I agree. Though “Live” is so close to C3 and available weeks earlier, I think Live may be the real standard.
Thursday’s at 9pm is definitely a combat zone – one that makes me happy I have a couple of DVRs!

as for Reaper vs. Supernatural, I completely agree. any show doing over 2.5 million (live) regularly should be golden on the CW.

I agree about the 2.5 million figure, Robert. How can the CW afford to be picky at this point? Most people don’t have more than one DVR. Most people still don’t have DVRs at all. Personally, I’m surprised Reaper hasn’t officially received its full season pick up yet. It’s a matter of survival at this point, and with the strike (likely) coming there aren’t going to be any pilot scripts written and filmed. That’s probably the only reason Life is Wild is still on the air. As for me, thought it’s not appointment television, I’d rather Reaper be successful than that girly teenish show, Gossip Girl. As a female it irritates me that the insipid teen soaps and Top Model are supposedly what appeals to girls. Shows that are written (supposedly) for men are always better in my opinion.
Again, THANK you for the numbers. We appreciate them. Feel free to post them at supernatural.tv if you have the time. The posters there would be most appreciative, as they nervously evaluate ratings every week.

I’m gonna let it go that Reaper has a higher DVR number. Most people who do own a DVR only own one, and seeing as Supernatural has more competition I sorta expect the Live+7 to be low with what the show has to face.

Galveston, I just posted this week’s #s on supernatural.tv — hopefully I did it the right way.

You did it the right way. I thank you for that. The supernatural.tv crowd are always grateful for ratings info. We appreciate it.

Thanks so much for posting, both here and SN.tv! Glad to see that SN broke the 3 million mark!

Not to freak anyone out, but I don’t believe these are correct, the final numbers for SN’s premire were 2.97. Just curious as to where these “live” numbers came from?

Charles: not freaking out it’s definitely good to clarify. These live numbers came from Nielsen. The “Live” numbers for weekly broadcast primetimes shows are posted weekly every Tuesday and may differ from other Live “final” numbers you see two days after the show has aired. Those final #’s are LIVE+SD and include Same Day DVR usage.
In the figures I used in the Table, I used *Live* viewing so that I could completely separate out the DVR usage. Hope that makes sense (and yes, Live+SD — same day DVR usage was was 2.966 million.)

Thank you so much for taking the time out to post those numbers Robert. It is really nice to see SN standing on its own, in the rough timeslot it has. And thanks for posting the DVR numbers as well. As Galveston said, anything is better than nothing!
Peace!!

I am interested in how all of the hour long CW shows do with DVR viewing. Those bumps may not mean much to the CSI’s on the schedule, but to Supernatural it could be the difference between season 4 and cancellation. I am surprised also about Reaper as the CW used DVR numbers as a reason for the quick pick up of Gossip Girl.

You’re welcome, Mel. Gorman insisted I do a DVR Battle that includes his beloved Gossip Girl. I’ll compare it to Smallville and get you a view of 2 more CW hour long shows. I’ll try to get that up over the weekend.

hey Robert, Can you update this for a few more weeks worth of DVRing?
Did you catch Thursday's awesome ep of Supernatural?
Thanks,
Mel

Hi Mel — because the LIVE+7 info tracks so far behind (it's almost 3 weeks old by the time its available) I'm moving to doing tables for the Top 20 shows or so, plus some fan favorites on a LIVE+SD basis with age demographic info. Supernatural's is here.
Supernatural is one of my new favorites. I didn't think I would like this show, but I was wrong — I enjoy it a lot. I just started catching up a week or so ago and already I'm almost at the end of season 2. I'll be caught up before the week is done.
I'll add the ratings for last Thursday's episode Tuesday or Wednesday (we don't have the data yet).
Thanks, Robert! It really is a great show, I'm so glad you're enjoying it.

Hi Robert,
I was wondering how Supernatural and actually all of the CW dramas were doing in time shifting.
For the big hit shows like Grey's and CSI the 7 day numbers are just an intersting post script. For the CW shows and possibly bubble shows like Moonlight and Sarah Conners it might have an impact on decision making come pick up time.
If you have the CW shows' numbers posted someplace already, i apologize — but I couldn't find it.
Hi Mel, we don't do this specifically for CW shows, but Bill regularly produces Live+7 numbers for the top 20 shows (both in terms of % increase due to DVR and absolute DVR #s). Many of the CW shows show up.
This data trails the normal data by over two weeks. We won't have 2/11-2/17 until Monday March 3, but if you comb through the older stuff, you can get an idea of how the CW shows do in terms of DVR use.
