I’m definitely no fan of “Gossip Girl” but being #1 on iTunes is not meaningless at all. Quite the contrary. It is another revenue stream, and every bit of revenue counts. After all, it costs $1.99 per download, right? Or is it more?

Also, fortunately for the CW (and unfortunately for fans of older-skewing programs), advertisers want shows that are #1 in certain small slices of the population. They will pay a LOT for shows that perform well among adults 18-34 and other demographic groups. I’m not saying it’s morally right. I’m not saying they should. I’m just saying they ARE DOING IT. Rena, nothing you say (and nothing I say) can change that.

Based on percentage of viewers, Gossip girl is in the TOP 5 SHOWS with the largest DVR rating increase

2)It is NUMBER 1 on itunes (beating greys anatomy every week and EVERY OTHER CW show)..It is also beating the office (although no longer on itunes, when it was it was the number one show downloaded)

JUST NEED MORE PEOPLE WATCHING LIVE!!!
LOVE GOSSIP GIRL (never been this excited for a show since LOST and BSG!!)

Mel, Nielsen doesn't count iTunes downloads, at least not yet. And I doubt the CW does either in terms of what shows they want to keep. It's the same as DVR where the CW press rounds up to "20%". While I can't say how GG girl did on iTunes while it was free for a week at the beginning of the month, this story says it had 2 out of 5 shows in the top 5 downloads recently.

Wow — Smallville does pretty well with DVR viewing. Really makes me wonder what the CW was looking at when they cited DVR viewing as one of the reasons for picking GG up for the whole season.
