UPDATE: NBC has announced that Chuck will Return in Fall 2008
When Seinfeld stood across the TV world like a colossus, NBC’s sitcoms were the envy of the industry. These days, not so much. Enter Chuck, a new comedy airing at 8PM Eastern Monday.
Once again we ask, Renew or Cancel?
Chuck’s Audience & Rank among New Shows and New NBC Shows
| Date | Audience, Live+SD (million) | Rank among all New Shows | Rank among New NBC Shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9/24 | 9.21 | #8 of 20 | #3 of 4 |
| 10/1 | 8.39 | #10 of 23 | #3 of 4 |
| 10/8 | 7.21 | #11 of 24 | #3 of 4 |
| 10/15 | 8.36 | #8 of 24 | #2 of 4 |
| 10/22 | 7.22 | #13 of 26 | #3 of 5 |
| 10/29* | 7.03 |
Chuck has lost 22% of it’s debut audience through 10/29 without stabilization. That’s a devastating trend.
It’s total Live+SD audience has been above average compared to other new shows, and has moved to #2 among new NBC shows.
For the week of Oct 15-21 it was #11 of 21 overall for NBC.
How is it doing against its competition on Monday?
Chuck’s Rankings for its 8pm Monday Timeslot.
| Date | Viewers | Adults 18-49 | Adults 18-34 | Adults 25-54 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9/24 | #2 | #2 | #2 | #2 |
| 10/1 | #2 | #2 | #3 | #2 |
| 10/8 | #4 | #4 | #4 | #4 |
| 10/15 | #3 | #2 | #2 | #2 |
| 10/22* | #4 | #4 | ||
| 10/29* | #3 | #3 |
Chuck started strong against its local 8PM Monday competition, initially finishing #2 to Dancing with the Stars and held up well in its second week.
However, by 10/22, Chuck had fallen to the back of the pack on Monday at 8PM across the board.
There are no national lead in numbers for an 8PM show, so Chuck doesn’t have to worry about that. Note that the networks get detailed audience numbers during the show time period to analyze, we don’t.
Conclusions
Negatives
- Significant audience loss since debut without apparent stabilization.
- Very negative trend vs. timeslot competition in all viewer categories.
Positives
- Currently NBC’s second best new show.
- Somewhat above average performance for all new shows in general.
- NBC is a beggar, not a chooser, among the networks, and its standards for renewal are likely lower than other networks.
Verdict: Based on current (10/29 PM) publicly available information, I’d call it a solid cancel.
11/26 UPDATE: NBC has ordered 9 more episodes of Chuck.

Chuck is tied with Pushing Daisies (I’ve been a big Bryan Fuller fan for many years) as my favorite new show of the season. I went in not knowing that much about the new season (unusual for me) and was surprised to find the gem that Chuck is. I’m at a loss as to why the show hasn’t really caught on.

I like Chuck; it has kept it’s comic overtones and the cast is great. Now the nitty gritty is how well is any show going to do against Dancing with the Stars? It’s a juggernaut; however while I have followed Dancing in the past this year none of the contestants entices me to watch for some reason and Chuck has held my enthusiasm. So keep it around and let’s not let NBC be too trigger happy either.

Chuck is so well written, acted and so over the top tongue in cheek it’s a breath of fresh air from the usual vomit the BIG networks serve up anymore. God forbid that anyone give something new a try…yeah, NBC, your ratings are SO huge let’s keep coming up with the same old re-hashed crap that you’ve been trying to shove down our throats since you lost your beloved Seinfeld. Wake up!
October 30th, 2007 at 1:48 pm
I’m with Herb, and I think we’re all way too quick to jump the gun these days. Chuck is a good show - light and sweet and fun. The actors are likable and talented (which is huge), and the writing is competent. Is it appointment TV? No. But when I see it in the stack on my Tivo, I smile and hit the button. If I were Ben Silverman I’d be riding the wave to see what happens when there is no more DWTS.
October 30th, 2007 at 2:01 pm
I was a huge fan of Jake 2.0 - Chuck is a close copy and not as well done. That said, I don’t think it should be pulled because it has an audience of eight million fans who would be disappointed if it were cancelled. Why isn’t eight million viewers enough?

Woah, you’re using viewer numbers in total millions? Advertisers only care about demos. (Yes, they are ageist bastards.) You should only do these studies using adult 18-49 ratings. Unfortunately “Chuck” looks about as bad in that demo as in total millions. Also, the timeslot rankings for 10/15 and 10/29 are misleading since young-male-demo-stealing competitor “Prison Break” was not on the air.
“Currently NBC’s second best new show” — that doesn’t count for much considering that all of its new shows are tanking. Also, if you take the debut of the hideous-looking “Phenomenon” into account, “Chuck” is now only third-best.
“Why isn’t eight million viewers enough?” Um, seven million, now. More importantly, only a 2.7 rating among adults 18-49. Why isn’t that enough? Well, why won’t a tablespoon of water keep a houseplant alive? Why won’t a thimble of cat food keep my cat alive?
I love “Chuck”, but the sad truth is that the ratings are just awful. Sigh.

Oh noes! I really like Chuck — I hope NBC is patient and maybe retools it a little– I wish they would focus a bit more on the spy stuff and less on the dorky friend and Chuck’s sister — those sidebar storylines suck the energy right out of the episodes (in my opinion)
However w/ the writer’s strike looming — I guess what we see is what we get

Chuck is a waste of air time. The premise was interesting for the first episode and having a few hot girls can only keep it interesting for a short period of time. Is it me or are girl\girl fight scenes about the lamest thing ever put on TV.

Remember Baywatch? Hot girls make for a good show, so let’s not undermine beautiful talented women on TV. Chuck will not be cancelled this season, because there is no replacement availablle before sweeps with a pending writers strike.

I actually totally love this show…I find it to be cute, funny and entertaining. I hope they don’t cancel it…maybe, if need be, move it to a different time slot.

I love Chuck! I would enjoy watching Chuck evolve and I hope NBC gives him the opportunity. So maybe we have to suspend disbelief a little (or a lot), but Zachary Levi makes it all worth while. I agree focusing too much on his friend Morgan may really hurt the show, but if they can keep the storylines interesting, and let Chuck slowly move from geek to geek-spy, it would work.

Does the number of viewers include those who watch the show online through nbc.com? If it doesn’t, then you have to consider the demographic that it is attracting. It seems to appeal to the young male geek. If that is the case, then the geeks would probably have a higher tendency to watch the show online at nbc’s website or by bittorrenting it.(Downloading shows through bittorrent tracker sites, such as mininova.org are very, very popular amongst geeks. HD-quality, on-demand, with no commercials, what’s not to like?) If the viewer number doesn’t include online viewers, then this could be the reason why the viewer numbers are lower. Personally, I think the show has gotten better through time, so it doesn’t make sense for the numbers to go done. A little aside, but I loved the last episode where Agent Casey is eavesdropping on the “sandwich conversation.” The look on his face at the end of the show was priceless!

Our numbers are the Nielsen television viewing numbers only, no online viewing of any kind.
We would *love* to get and report the numbers from webstreaming and download viewing, but at this point, nobody’s sharing, at least not in any organized public manner.

I really enjoy this show. It’s different than any other show out there. Hope they loose Morgan character. He’s just there to annoy the heck out of you.
Hope NBC won’t cancel it.

Im from Argentina, i’ve watch all the episodes so far on my computer and I think we should give Chuck a bit more time. It is opening down here in south America tomorrow, i might get big down here and that would be a good reason for NBC to renew episodes since they can sell it in South America, we all know they just care about the money they can gain with a show, not the ratings or whatsoever.

I want Chuck to stay it may have lost numbers since the first week but is gaining with addition of viewers like me

I doubt NBC will cancel the show without giving it a chance for one enormous reason: McG is an executive producer of the show. It may not ring alot of bells but he is expensive and directed the first Charlie’s Angels. The second CA was lack luster but the first one was HUGE. The same qualities that made CA a hit are present in Chuck. In any event I love “Chuck.” It is a breath of fresh air with cinematic quality action and great camera work. The actors are loveable and believable and plotlines are entertaining and always worth watching. I watch DWTS too (thank God for TiVO) but if forced to choose, I would pick Chuck over DWTS any day.

I love Chuck, and so do my kids. It’s one of the few t.v. shows adults and kids (8, 12) can watch together and enjoy.
Please don’t cancel it, NBC! Move it to a different time slot where it doesn’t face such heavy competition.

I LOVE CHUCK, it’s one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time, with it’s tongue and cheek humor it’s well written and well acted, I’m very quick to jump on this one and say it’s a keeper. with shoes such as bionic women struggling to keep a story line or any decent acting, this show has everything you could want. cast is great. big time keeper.

It would be a shame for NBC to cancel Chuck. In a day and age when its either sex and violence or overly redundant and drawn out “what can we do next to make a buck” reality T.V. shows that have plagued television the past few years to the point of an incurable disease, Chuck is a breath of fresh air. Its fun, imaginitive, with a speck of action and adventure, with a great cast, a good dose of humor, and something I look forward to seeing every Monday.
Cancel Chuck and I guess its Dancing with the Big Brother’s Survivor Idol singing sensation of weight loss fake reality drivelous television.

If they cancel it, I’ll officially never watch TV again. Ok, that isn’t true, but this is the only show I’ll watch from this new season.

I have to say that Chuck is hands down my favorite show this year. In a way, it reminds me of one of my former favorite TV shows, Ed. The lighthearded goofball main character with a truly good heart (Ed). The slightly annoying and misfit friend with lots of funny lines (remember Cheswick?). The beautiful female friend who can’t figure out if she likes the main character or not (Carol Vessey).
Yep… a good wholesome show with great writing, great humor, and good acting that somehow just can’t measure up ratings-wise to all the crap that’s on TV these days. I know it will get cancelled, but it’s not NBC’s fault. It’s the American public’s fault for watching the 12th season of Survivor, or American Idol 8 instead. What is wrong with people these days? Don’t they get tired of watching the same stuff over and over again?
Hey, here are some of my other favorite shows that got cancelled:
Quantum Leap
The Pretender
Alias
Ed
Lost (well, not yet, but it will be if they only put out new episodes once a year)
Speaking of Lost, I don’t think it was titled that because they are lost on an island. I think it came from the feeling all of the viewers have each week after watching the show.

Wow.. A solid Cancel huh.. I do not think so this show has so much passion so much drive its by far the best show I have ever seen! The actors pull off there characters so well and I think if NBC cancels this show it will be a huge mistake. It has only done a few episodes and it takes a while to get the word out. I have been telling more and more people about Chuck everyday and they all watch the show and love it. who wouldnt it has comedy, action, romance, suspence, everything that someone would want in a t.v and I will be terrified if the show is cancel.

I love Chuck it is a show where the humor is well thought, and not the lame humor you see in other shows, where someone falling is funny. Chuck has great casting–I really hope NBC gives it atleast a 2nd season, to get its fan base up!!

I love Chuck, too. I should confess I’m not an avid TV watcher and at the same time have an extremely busy schedule/crazy life style, but Chuck is one of the very few shows I watch - as one said it’s like breating some fresh air. It’s simple, funny, … oh I gotta go: it’s Monday 8:00 pm, and it’ll start in a couple of seconds…

Chuck is Great! It is honestly the first show on NBC that I have ever watched. And in the first 4 episodes it has turned into one of my favorite shows. The one liners are hilarious, the cast is lovable, and the actors are fresh and energetic. DWTS? I have never watched one episode. Chuck is something new, yet “old school”. It is funny without being off colored. It has action without all the blood and guts, and also sexy without the sex. The cast has great on screen chemistry. I watch this over Monday Night Football every week. I would be crushed if Chuck is cancelled

Chuck is the only show that I make a point to watch each week. If I’m not home on a Monday, I DVR it. It would be a big mistake on NBC’s part to not keep it for a long while. It has great comedy, action, suspense, drama, and romance. What else could a viewer need? I probably will watch a lot less NBC programs if anything does happen to Chuck.

In my opinion, “Chuck” is the best show on NBC this season. I got addicted to it. Thanks to iTunes and nbc.com. I was able to watch all the episodes that I missed. I just love it. I hope this strike doesn’t mess things up now that the show is building momentum. Neilsen ratings are overrated, but unfortunately it’s the only measurinng service out there. What we watch doesn’t really matter if we don’t have the stupid meter hooked up to our TV set. And the so-sought after demo 18-49 - really broad demo btw - is all advertisers care about. All these numbers are very loose estimates of what people are watching. More people are watching shows online. NBC has the top downloads on iTunes, but that is not accountable for. Isn’t that one of the major reasons writers are on strike? It has got to mean something. I hope they keep the show for at least another season. If not, we need to start a campaign to keep them on the air. It has worked before.

I love chuck. I really hope they don’t cancel it. We don’t even know how the story will unfold. I hope they give it a chance. We’ve only started. Chuck is also the only new show i watch, besides Bones (on fox, which is on it’s third season)

I never post to boards like this, but on the off chance folks at NBC actually look to this sort of stuff to help them guage whether to keep a show, let me just say that Chuck is the only show I look forward to each week. The stories are just plain ridiculous, of course, but the cast is great and it’s nice to have something simple and light hearted to watch. I’m completely hooked. And if you do cancel it, for goodness sake, please let Chuck end up with Sarah before you do!

that’s it — you folks have convinced me that I need to go on a Chuck binge.
Well at least a mini-binge, with only 9 episodes I should be able to catch up over the holiday weekend
I’ll chime in when I’m done…

I think you might want to change your verdict, since you asked this CHUCK has been NBC’s #1 new show and has steadily gained viewers in a timeslot that is a killer. Look at the time shift numbers too, it seems to gain in that every week. For a new show with no big lead in it is doing just fine and will be renewed.

This is an amazing show, it is well written, light-hearted, and has great action pieces. I LOVE the actors! All of them! I love Morgan! The quirky supporting characters are great and add to the charm of the show.
I am in the desired demographic and I just wish I had a nielson box so I could make a difference. Both I and my 16 year old love it, so it crosses many age demographics.

This show has a lot ot offer everyone. It is true that you can watch it with your kids. My daughter and I watch this show together, and we look forward to it every week. There are so many shows out there, that have too much sex or other things that don’t make it appropriate to watch it with your kids. This show delivers just the right juice for the whole family to enjoy without going over the top in the process. I could not imagine this show without all the characters that are currently in it..they make the show a success, and I hope that NBC does not cancel this show. I cannot wait until tomorrow night when I can sit down and have some quality time with the family..as we watch the greatest show on t.v.!!!

9 more episodes… Yeah… I love this show, Well, except the Morgan character (Found him to be rather annoying). Would love to see chuck spend less time at the store. Better yet have chuck quit the store and have him work some place else.

Chuck is an awesome show. It’s not violence and sex everywhere. The plots actually took thought to make. The characters are simple and easy to connect to. If you recall, “Seinfeld” didn’t have the best ratings for the first couple seasons and turned into one of the best sit-coms TV had ever seen. “Chuck’s” views went up over 500,000 last week. The show is catching on, it will be a definite keeper.

Chuck is the TV show I had to download because I’m in Iraq. I shared it with my team, and now they’re hooked. Great show - comedy, romance, drama, good looking women, heros, anti-heroes and villians. Great Characters and strong actors. NBC really has a good show here, keep it catered to their core audience and it will get the numbers it deserves.

All of you have no taste… Chuck is a stupid show with no future and should have been taken off the air weeks ago. I would rather watch Joel Osteen tell me why I am going to hell or Ronco sell me the magic bullet than another episode of Chuck.

Chuck is sweet and funny and really speaks to an age group (i.e. 18-49 demographic) that is disappointed by how life has turned out, like Chuck, who’s plans for a successful career were squashed. Chuck is endearing television- it grows on you. I, for one, am going to keep watching it as long as NBC lets me.

I’ve enjoyed Chuck, and think it is really well written. Though really far fetched, the humor is enticing and keeps me coming back every week. It is definitely one of NBC’s best new offerings, though it’s been competing for viewership in an extremely difficult timeslot. Change that and I think NBC will be in for several strong seasons with Chuck.

Yes I admit Chuck is a bit far fetched, however me and a lot of others I know are enjoying it and plus its much better than most of the other crap out there… i.e. Prison Break
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:54 pm
The show sucks ass.
The guy was uploaded with info 2 months ago, yet he knows stuff that happened two days ago? WTF?
And how lame is a spy show where (a) the spies and bad guys suck (one kick and apparently they disappear), (b) the dangers are hokey and stupid, (c) every time they get into a pinch, one guy suddenly knows how to solve it because he’s was given information 2 months ago.
The ONLY thing this show has is a hot girl. And she’s only hot if she keeps her mouth closed. Once she opens it, her messed up teeth get in the way.
Cancel this crap.
December 3rd, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Oh, and you people who say it’s “well written” need to get out. The show’s writing is somewhere above Garfield’s 27th book and somewhere below old Peanuts comic strips.
In other words, it sucks too.

CHUCK IS THE ONLY SHOW I WATCH. If NBC dumps it I’m dumping NBC. Chuck is the only show worth watching. After I’m done writing this I’m going to the NBC website and telling them what I think. I encourage everyone who loves the show to do the same. With enough emails maybe we can get through to them.

Honestly, Chuck could be a major hit if it retooled a bit. As it caters to the nerd/geek culture, or is meant to, it should be far more accurate in terms of the technology involved. Another problem would be its lack of what I like to call badassery. No self respecting nerd (myself included) would want to see our people shown as a whiny little wimp with barely the ability to take care of himself. Some of us are actually pretty tough, yet give us a broken pc and it’s as good as fixed.

Chuck is my favorite show on TV right now. I recorded it all the time and watched the very next day as soon as i had time to. I love the actors in it and its really funny. It has action too and a very beautiful girl i might add. I think that if they were going to replace it they would do it with something a little more appealing than American Gladiator. The show is terrible and nowhere near the show it was back when. But Chuck needs to stay on air cause its a show that i believe could take off into something great.

Please give Chuck a little more time and also remember that the Writer’s Strike has hurt allot of TV shows with potential. Chuck has action, romance, humor, the “villain” and the “hero” and enough innocence where you don’t feel uncomfortable allowing your kids to watch alongside you. Sure, it is a stretch for the imagination but that is forgivable because it is a fun show. I call for “a stay of execution”.

Chuck is a solid show with good actors and lots of plot material. In a world where one major technology store is dominant and that “culture” of the retail-worker is well known, the show is a refreshing mix of comedy, wit, as well as sci-fi technology, spies, and geeks.
The best new NBC show, God help us if they replace this with yet another law and order or CSI.. because we need 8 shows of each. Not to knock those shows, but it is getting a bit ridiculous. I hope this show doesn’t die because of this writers strike. No new shows are poste
