I always thought the can’t miss formula was Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll. Instead, ABC tries the similar forumula of Sex and Money and Scandal with Dirty Sexy Money at 10PM Eastern Wednesday.

It’s total Live+SD audience has been above average compared to other new shows, but has slipped to #5 among new ABC shows.
For the week of Oct 22-28 it was #15 of 22 for all viewers and #13 of 22 for 18-49 viewers for ABC.

Dirty Sexy Money has settled into the #2 viewer and demo viewer position on Wednesday at 10PM against the competition of CSI:NY and Life. For demo viewers, that’s pretty easy competition, since CSI:NY is a weak demo performer.

Dirty Sexy Money has the enviable position of following Private Practice, this season’s second hottest new show. Sadly, it loses a very significant share [~30%] of the audience from Private Practice in the process. That’s a big negative, and indicates to me that in a different schedule slot, Dirty Sexy Money wouldn’t look nearly as good.

11/17 UPDATE: ABC has granted a full season order for Dirty Sexy Money. Not clear how that’s going to be filled with the writers strike on, but fans can hope.
Verdict: Renew.
However, I think it’s an obvious beneficiary of schedule position, and were it or Private Practice to be moved, I could see it getting hit hard.
Note from Seidman: I disagree with Bill (shock, I know!) about the importance of lead-in. The one benefit a good lead-in has is that the next show can be promoted heavily during the airing of the lead-in. Otherwise, since the dawn of everyone having a remote control, I believe this is a statistic that doesn’t have much value at all.
Back when we had to get up off our lazy butts to change the channel, lead-in was a huge deal. Now? I doubt it. That there is still Nielsen focus on this metric seems like mostly legacy thinking.
I don’t see Dirty Sexy Money benefiting greatly from its Private Practice lead-in, and think it would fare about the same elsewhere in the schedule other than on Friday/Saturday. I think it would do even better following Desperate Houswives, not because of the bigger lead-in, but because the shows are more similar. I like this show mostly because of the cast, especially Donald Sutherland. He’s creepy cool.

I would be extremely disappointed if it was canceled. The only complaint Ive ever heard about it was that it was on too late.

I’m confused why this would be pulled. There is absolute rubbish on everywhere and a show like DSM is said to be a loser???? Reality shows and cartoons are renewed at the drop of a hat. DSM has the intrigue mystery and sex mixed in. It’s what makes us come back each week.
Finally a show about grown ups for grown ups and it will no doubt be replaced by yet another teen soap.

With all shows, it takes promotions to attract an audience. And aside from the normal bumpers and ads on ABC, I haven’t seen any street and billboard or heard radio ads for this show. But, still garnering a nice following from its viewers. Never underestimate the power of promotion. And ABC, please remain positive about this shows potential. It is a one of a kind. And I know where I’ll be on Wednesday night!
ABC blew it last time by cancelling Invasion, one of the few intelligent and adult plot line shows. Seems if you have half a brain you are not worthy of good programming. DS$ is obviusly an entertaining show and I can’t believe there is even a discussion on whether they should renew or not. In case you can’t tell which way I am leaning—RENEW!!!
I have not loved a show this much since Twin Peaks, I didn’t even stay with Lost! The only reason not as many people are watching DSM is because it comes on late, sometimes a time slot can make all the difference, I personally think private practice is a boring run of the mill show, are people really stupid enough to like it more than Dirty Sexy Money? Please don’t cancel my only favorite show!
PLEASE do not cancel Dirty Sexy Money!! Every time I watch I just get more excited about the plot. The scandal, the lavish lifestyles, the politics, Jeremy, Nola, Nick, Karen, Lisa, Leticia, Simon, ALL of the characters are absolutely a recipe for great entertainment. PLEASE LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

Chris, I looked through our data, but not very extensively, and my conclusion is that it’s simply Google search for the phrase “Dirty Sexy Money Cancelled” and not a link that’s doing it.
What used to be interesting to me is that people ignore the giant bold link text at the top of the post, but now I realize that most people don’t read anything in cases like this.
Where in the world do they get these ‘ratings’ from? How can some horrible shows last so long, and creative and entertaining shows like Dirty Sexy Money get canceled so quickly? Soon there will be nothing good left to watch on television!

OMG… I read that Dirty Sexy Money was going to be canceled, and I was extremely disappointed!!! All my friends told me to watch it. I just started watching it this season, and I’m HOOKED. The cast is great.. I find it to be one of the best Primetime shows on the air. RENEW… I love the show!

After hearing that “Dirty Sexy Money” was cancelled, I just could not beleive that the Execs at ABC could once again dissapoint its viewers!!!!…This show may not have had the best ratings but it also takes time to develop its following….The acting and writing on this series was excellent…I also thought not renewing the contract of Samaire Armstrong was also a huge mistake!!!….I honestly do hope this show continues and gets picked up a cable network….It gets so frustrating to take the time to learn the characters of a great show and then watch its demise by the idiots who make that decision to cancel….COME ON ABC….what are you guys thinking!!!!!!!

This show is fantastic. Absolutely entertaining and original, there is nothing like it on tv. How many medical dramas and Reality tv shows do we really need nowadays? Dirty Sexy Money has a wonderful cast and the storylines are great! I love watching it every Wednesday and can’t wait for the following episode. I can’t believe this is going to be canceled! What’s more is that I can’t believe that the network isn’t even trying to keep it on the air by maybe changing the timeslot or putting it on another day! I’m so bummed out that this will no longer be on my line up of shows to watch!

DIRTY SEXY MONEY is the best show. I’m sick of reality shows and singers who think they can sing. If you would have watched DSM from the beginning you would know what is going on like every other show you watch from the start. It’s an amazing show. ABC needs to see what they can do to save Dirty Sexy Money, Sunday’s would be good for- DHW, B&S and DSM. In the Dallas area if it’s not possible to move it to Sunday, change Wed to 9pm in lieu of 8pm. It just seems when a good soap has one good season ABC doesn’t show much support in promoting it for the next season. However, ABC does go all out for DHW’s and B&S’s. ABC – Please try to get DSM back. Maybe it would help if viewers were aware when a show is getting into trouble. When a soap is cancelled it’s hard to start watching another one because you’re in fear it will be cancelled right when your all involved. Maybe it would help at the beginning of the season for night soaps if it would be advertised the show will have 16 shows etc for the seaso, this way one would be more apt not to miss one. Also, Wednesday’s is a church night, it’s hard to be back home by 8pm.

I like the show but yelling renew at last years numbers AND plus this year it had terrible numbers: absolutely terrible. ABC shouldn’t have not aired it over the spring but hey that was their choice.
Fin, it’s because of how Google works. If you type “Dirty Sexy Money Renew” this is like the first thing to come up. If you type “Dirty Sexy Money Cancel” you get the right post. We could actually set things up on our end to redirect the pages to more recent updates, but that winds up being a lot of work.
So, we point them to the recent info in big letters at the top of the post, but, that doesn’t work as well…

Oh, I know. It still never ceases to amaze me that people can’t see the writing on the wall.
That no matter how many times it is explained, that TV is a business, and not a philanthropic activity to promote the arts,they still believe that their show should be saved if solely on artistic merits.
That there are still people that think that total viewers are more important than the demo when evaluating the fate of a show.
That there are people that think that fan campaigns can amount to anything after Jericho tainted that well for everyone else.
True S.: but such ignorance is the basis of emotional attachment to a show that have for some people become part of their daily ritual that is more powerful than some may perceive. Plus i guess if some show does die and you really want it to return it is better to try than feel you allowed it to just die and do nothing. Not knowing what might have been: even though second chance renewals are rare: i can only say Family Guy is the only successful renewal after being cancelled that i know of.
Though for me its the date of the post that gives it away: October 2007. Buts its funny to watch lost fans moan and complain and like you say never respect TV that is a bussiness. Aw well….
