Overnight Results 11/2: A Dip in Moonlight Viewers?

Posted on 03 November 2007 by Robert Seidman

CW Out of the Cellar Again with Smackdown

Scoreboard for Friday Nov 2 CBS ABC NBC CW FOX
Total Viewers (million) 8.65 7.59 7.41 4.64 2.31
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.3/7 1.8/6 1.9/6 1.4/5 1.0/3

That Fox’s The Next Great American Band sucks, is great news for The CW.  Moonlight fans, I worry that there may be a reporting error with Berman’s #s.  It shows a drop of about a million viewers from last week while Women’s Murder Club gained a few viewers over last week.  But if the numbers are right everyone who tuned out was over 49 because Moonlight still won the hour as far as the 18-49 demo and CBS won the night both in viewers and in the demo.   I’ll follow up on Moonlight’s ratings on Tuesday when we get the weekly results directly from Nielsen, if not sooner.

On to the shows:

Time Network Show Viewers (Millons) 18-49 Rating/Share

8:00 NBC Deal or No Deal 9.3 2.0/7
  CBS Ghost Whisperer 9.13 2.5/9
ABC Men in Trees 5.87 1.5/5
CW Friday Night Smackdown 4.64 1.4/5
FOX The Next Great American Band 2.31 1.0/3

9:00 ABC Womens Murder Club 9.47 1.9/6
  CBS Moonlight 7.57 2.1/7
NBC Friday Night Lights 5.45 1.8/5

10:00 CBS Numb3rs 9.24 2.3/7
  NBC Las Vegas 7.41 2.1/6
  ABC 20/20 7.41 2.0/6

“Fox’s The Next Great American Band sucks”. Indeed.

However, if the writers strike lasts past the holidays, you might see the top 3 shows for Friday’s being Smackdown, American Band and 20/20 by January.

    i like moonlight.

If the writer's strike lasts long, I'll not be watching the networks at all – it'll be movie night. If CBS cancels “Moonlight” the only show I'll tune in for on CBS is “Ghost Whisperer” just like before “Moonlight” came along.

If there was an error in the numbers, I hope CBS realizes that.

    Moonlight is awesome.

I confess I have yet to watch Moonlight (though I did watch 60 episodes of House in the last few weeks).

But it's obvious to me that Moonlight has something special going for it. To have built such a loyal and dedicated following of awesome fans after only a few episodes is a prety amazing accomplishment.

Personally I'm a huge Blood Ties fan. This show is smart, witty, and has a large cult following. It's a shame Lifetime doesn't do a better job marketing this show. With it's odd time slot it's hard to attract new viewers.

I don't think the Next Great American Band sucks. The problem is, the viewers who WOULD be watching it are out on Friday nights – in many cases watching bands perform LIVE in clubs. I think this show would actually be really successful on just about any night. Someone in the FOX office had their head up their ass when they chose the night for this show. I saw it on Friday night and thought it was pretty good. Stupid choice for a night is really the only problem in my opinion.

I dearly love Moonlighting. It is a clever way of taking a negative and giving it a positive story line. I parallel it to Bram Stoker's Dracula.

  24. Gladys says:

Correction: I should say I dearly love Moonlight. Must be having flashbacks!

  27. Lori says:

Moonlight is the only show I absolutely look forward to anymore – not since Blind Justice has there been anything that has asked for nor kept my loyalty as a television viewer. I only hope that CBS will stand behind this unique offering and give it a fighting chance to find its feet. It is a unique and entertaining take on a very old subject. In this case, old has never looked better!

  29. Eve says:

Moonlight is a well-written program with just the right amount of drama, romance, sprinkled with a bit of humor. It is a great way to end the work week. I hope the network keeps this program on the air – regardless of the writers strike. I rather see these episodes rerun than watch something else!

  30. Debbie says:

Moonlight is why I watch TV on Fridays. I look forward to it all week. I hope CBS gives it a chance to find it's viewers.

  37. Robert Seidman says:

Sadly, it wasn't an error. In the LIVE plus Same Day DVR usage weekly numbers, Nielsen reported 7.553 million viewers for Moonlight on 11/2.

It appears the 8+ million number from the prior week was just a brief surge.

  39. virago says:

Moonlight is quite simply the best show on television today….network or cable. It deserves to be renewed, with or without the WGA strike. If CBS cancels ML, I will stop watching CBS. If the networks begin airing “Reality” television, I will stop watching television altogther. I will spend my evenings surfing the Web on my computer and replaying my Moonlight downloads. That's a promise!

also, I would like to know how to keep “Moonlight” on the air? I am a huge fan of the show. It is the thing I look forward to every week. It would be devastating if it were to be cancelled. I would never watch cbs again. This show deserves a real chance.
