5/13 UPDATE: Cane Has Been Cancelled
CBS’s Cane, Tuesday 10PM Eastern, has been likened to a “broadcast Sopranos”.

In a fairly weak group of new CBS shows, Cane’s ratings started at the top, but the rise of Big Bang Theory and Moonlight ratings, along with Cane’s ratings loss has dropped it to 3rd among CBS new shows.
It started near the top of all new shows, but has drifted down to merely above average. It’s 11/6 ratings performance was in a week without 3 strong new ABC shows airing.
For the first time we’re including Hispanic viewing rank among English language shows here, and Cane’s ratings rank is remarkably inconsistent. One week in the teens, the next above 25.

Except for its debut week (and 18-34 on 11/6), Cane’s ratings have finished at the bottom of the major English broadcast network shows across the board at 10pm Tuesday.
It has also consistently lost viewers each week (*10/23 data is Live, all other data is Live+SD, useful for rankings but not viewership trends) and 11/6 was at 69% of it’s debut viewership.
12/21 UPDATE: Added data through 12/11. After continuing to decline, Cane ratings did see an uptick on 12/11, but is it too little too late?
1/9 UPDATE: Added 12/18 data [no regular broadcasts since then], and those numbers were not good news. #6 in adults 18-34. Yikes.

Negatives
- Cane ratings are consistently last place in its timeslot across the board.
- Cane ratings continue to fall across all categories.
- In a relatively weak group of new CBS shows, Cane ratings are below average.
Positives
- Cane ratings are above average vs. all new broadcast shows.
Verdict: Cancel.
Some marginal new shows may benefit from a long writer’s strike. If the studios cannot choose new pilots for next season in the spring, the thinking goes, they may end up resigning mediocre shows from this year. Could Cane be one of those?

sadly, this is my absolute favorite new show to watch. It really is an excellent show and I am intrigued each week. Is it the right timeslot for the show? The right network? All I know is I am fascinated and love most of the characters and I haven’t missed a week.
This show is provacative on many levels. I really hope it gets renewed and revives.

Cane is the only show I never ever miss. The show is so great–I don’t understand the drop off in viewers. This is the only thing I watch on CBS, so I really hope they stick with it to see if it can build an audience.

I love this show myself I can’t believe the show has low ratings could the rating be rigged. These two epposides were great and have me wanting more Cane that whole cast is excellent, I love the storyline I have not missed one epposide, So Pleaseeeeeeeeeeee don’t cancel Cane that is the only show I watch on CBS and if it is cancel I would not even bother watching nothing on CBS because this is the only show I love.Also we don’t want to give up Nestor to Lost as the title of the show they lost him.

CANE is the only show on CBS that I watch also. I watch it every Tuesday, and when I dont watch it live, I have it recorded on my DVR. The show is awesome but it just hasn’t gotten the right promotion for it like how Survivor or LOST gets. I will definitely purchase the first season DVD when it comes out. Please don’t cancel the show. I can’t wait for season 2.

As usual a great show comes along and they want to cancel. This show is the best new show of the season next to Private Practice. I look forward to my Tuesday evenings and can never get enough of Cane. It was so nice last night to get 2 hours. The writing is the best and it g=keeps gettting better. I am from Fl. and can’t believe this show is not doing goood in the ratings. Please where are all the true Neilsen people out there I’ll start ratin the shows for them. How do ya get to be picked to do something like that. Please keep Cane on

I have watched this show from the very beginning. I love the characters. I feel it is very well written. If this show is cancelled, I will have a a very hard time putting forth any effort to watch any future new shows on CBS. I feel CBS should give this show a chance. Try moving to a different night or time slot CBS. We can’t let network television fall to all reality tv!

I Love Cane! It’s a great show with really solid acting. And I love the humor. You’re right about Hunter. He’s funny and a nice balance to the rest of the cast. I also love seeing Jimmy Smitts and Nestor Carbonell every week.

It would be a shame to cancel this show now. Some of the best shows (ie. X-Files) were given a chance during initially poor ratings even only to blossom. Keep the show. It is well written, well acted and interesting.

My sister loves it, my aunt won’t miss an episode, my mother is hooked and it’s the best show I’ve seen in eons. Great writing, great cast and I know plenty of people who LOVE Cane. Funny thing, these ratings, how accurate are they really? Please CBS, keep this entertaining show on tv. If you must, give it a better time slot , but please don’t cancel.

If cane goes, then I will punt my tv into the studio lot. where can you get characters like that? Not easy to do. It’s a great concept. They should make an effort, move it around, something! Everyone on the show is great, Smitts, Carbonell, Eddie Matos, even guys like the white doughy guy who is the marketing exec for the rum. All of ‘em are good. Watch out, if it goes. FORE!

Aside from college football this is the only other thing that I watch on CBS. Since the show aired I’ve been glued to my tv every Tuesday @ 10. With the Sopranos off the air this show can fill the void that many viewers now have. I recently turned on 3 of my primos, who were big Sopranos’ fans, to CANE. They love CANE. Funny thing is that they hadn’t heard about CANE till I text ‘em 2 weeks ago. Apparently CBS should market/advertise a little harder. If they do this and air CANE for a 2nd season I’m sure that CANE will fair better.
The plot is great, characters likable, relevance dang good! It has all the elements of the Sopranos. CBS big shots help make it the next Sopranos.

Cane has one of the 3 or 4 best casts on Television. The writing is fine and storyline is intriguing. It would be a shame to see it go - to me its right up with West Wing as far as quality goes.

Cane is by far, and I mean BY FAR, the best new show on TV this year. I haven’t missed an episode and absolutely love the cast, plotlines etc. This is so much more enjoyable than the reality TV crap being shoved down the throat of U.S. viewers. I refuse to watch reality TV any longer. Please bring Cane back next year.

Cane is an amazing show that should not be canceled. My whole house watches it and we are just starting to really get into these characters. We are drawn to the writing, acting, and unique content that Cane provides. PLEASE keep my Tuesday nights alive!!!

My wife and I watch Cane every week and have never missed an episode. We think it is exceedingly better than Private Practice, which is the show everyone else seems to be watching. There isn’t really a weak member of the excellent cast, and each episode has been top notch. Unlike some other shows which have some throw away episodes, Cane really hasn’t yet. We hope it gets new episodes for after the holidays and strike.

Why cancel CANE? Are you kidding me? It’s one of the best shows, with some better writing than many shows these days. I suppose you want to see more sex and blood in the show. It would be disgraceful if CBS cancelled CANE. Everyone knows Neilsen–the pay per family service–is not a reliable source. What else is there to watch that isn’t a crime scene or reality TV these days?

I like many things about Cane. Jimmy Smits is a delight to watch and the supporting cast is also good. I like the Cuban/Spanish flavor of it, kind of a Hispanic Godfather, if you will. But … the story will be increasingly hard to sustain going forward. I predict it will be cancelled.

I love the flava, the guest appearances, it’s sexy and I love that they speak Spanglish! It’s phenomenol. Maybe we could appeal to Oprah to brag about it on her show. She can sell anything.

True– I was a little overwhelmed with it at first– but each week the plotline got better– the characters got deeper–
In my house it was “Mommy’s show” at first– and Mommy doesn’t even WATCH network TV, but now my teens are coming in to watch it with me, and they are as transfixed as I am.
Give it another season– it’s just now coming into its own…

The only week rating probably dropped big is when cbs was idiots and changed the time. My dvr missed it I imagine so did a lot of other dvr’s which would equal ratings drop.
Cane is by far the best show on TV right now.
If cbs cancels it I hope hbo would pick it up and make it even better.
This and Jericho are the 2 best shows on regular TV

I hope cbs takes a hard look before canceling this show. The casting of Cane was supurb, they are performing a great job. Jimmy should get an award for his performances, especially regarding last weeks performance when he informed the family of the truths he kept from them. I to hope if CBS cancels that they will be picked up from another network, that is the day I will switch from cbs to ?????. So, change the time slot or change the network, but I hope they do not cancel the show.

CBS needs to find better shows to put on after NCIS. The Unit loses over a third of its lead-in and Cane loses half of what’s left.
If they put a couple of good, compatible shows after NCIS they’d have a powerhouse.
I don’t think Cane is under-performing because of its time slot.

Jimmy Smits has done an excellent job at producing this show. It is exciting, intriging, action packed, yet sentimental about the latino family and culture. I’ve not missed an episode. Don’t cancel it.

Tuesday night for me was a bad night for TV until Cane came along. I am HOOKED! Great setting and wonderful actors, I hope it makes the cut and is around for a while. I will be greatly disappointed if the show were cancelled.

I truly hope this show isn’t cancelled. I just read an article by a TV critic stating that the show is already cancelled, and wont be brought back after the writers strike. I think CBS would be making a huge mistake.
The cast is excellent, and the storylines interesting and exciting. I think what might save this show would be a move to a different time slot. The 10pm Tuesday night slot is difficult, against Boston Legal. I would try it, perhaps on Friday night, where the competition might not be as tough. Friday at 10pm Eastern would be a good slot. “Las Vegas” ,on NBC, has deteriorated since James Caan left the show, and the only other network show on at that time is 20-20, due to the Fox, UPN, and WB channels having their 10pm news casts. Not everyone is into News.
I hope they save this show, and move the time slot.

PLEASE do not cancel this excellent show! It consistently has fine scripts, excellent ensemble acting, rich plot lines, great locations, great music, and is one of the best series to appear on TV in a long time. Jimmy Smits anchors the top notch cast and the women have good roles, too, for a change. CBS needs to make this work - if they cancel “Cane” it will be a sign that they are selling out on one of their very best shows in years.

Renew, renew, renew!!! My entire family and I are addicted to this show and would be very sad to see it go. It’s entertaining and a great look into our Cuban culture. It is one of the only shows on TV right now that keeps us guessing every week. These last few weeks really got the discussion going in our house about ‘who did it’. If CBS cancels this show, I don’t know what we’ll do!!!

There is talk of canceling because it’s doing horribly.
Noy only is it not a new Dallas by any stretch (the closest thing is perhaps Desperate housewives) but it is also playing to Latino negative stereotypes.
I think the show hasn’t been embraced by Latinos because they are just not going to embrace shows where they are portrayed as gangsters (no matter how high-class).
When portrayals of Latinos by Hollywood become more realistic, maybe there will be space for a Latino Godfather wanna-be, but it’s not surprising it’s not doing well.

Please, dont cancel “CANE”….. I’m truly a big, big fan of it. The actors in it are “great”!!!! The story lines keep me wanting to watch more. I even changed watching Nip/Tuck at 10:00PM to 11:00pm, just to watch “CANE” at that time… Sometimes, I don’t even bother watching Nip/Tuck because it’s late and I need to go to bed….

Is it just me or is there really no point in having a dozen fans of each show post essentially the exact same message.
Nielsen’s site is trying to grow itself but it’s a complete bore due to endless fanfest messages, of no interest even to fans, by the same few people.

Please, please renew Cane. This is my very favorite show on TV. I have never taken the time to even give an opinion on any show before, but this one is different. It’s fresh. I simply love it. What a wonderful cast and wonderful plots. I can’t say enough about it. I havn’t missed a episode. My family and friends love it too. I think it’s # 1. I was so tickled to see it got nomiated for a PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD. I can’t believe CBS would even consider canceling this awesome show. This is the best show to come along in a long time. Please CBS don’t cancel this show.

NCIS has 18 million viewers, Cane has 6 an hour later!

Oh My Gosh! I can’t beleive canceling Cane is even being considered. This is the best show on TV. Not only is it the best show on TV. It has the best cast anywhere and great plots. This show always keeps me on the edge of my seat.I have not been this addicted to a show since Dallas. My family and myself look foward to it each week. Please CBS don’t cancel Cane. This is a great show, we never miss it, we record it, we discuss it, we love ALL the actors, ALL the story lines, it’s actually interesting, reminds us of HBO series that we love (Deadwood, Rome) where it’s a progressive drama that makes you think, yet entertains you. PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL!

i agree, i am turned upside down now that it has stopped, i really hope they dont cancel. i dont really think it is the right time slot, its hard to compete with law and order. but simular to csi miami, i believe it it the right company, but if they dont know how to sceldule a great show like this so that it thrives, maybe they did chose the wrong network.

My husband and I have started watching Cane this season, and we are absolutely loving it. We both think that this is the best show that has come on T.V. since NYPD Blue. It is awesome, we love Jimmy Smitts, and the rest of the cast are great. We love the storyline, and can’t wait for Tuesday nights to watch it. We are going to be very disappointed if this show is cancelled, and have vowed never to watch T.V. again if this showed is pulled off the air!!

This is a fabulous show. Please don’t cancel this show. You have a phenomenal cast of latino actors. They are powerful, it’s a new wave of drama and very fitting iof the times we live. I just can’t stand the thought of not seeing CANE next season. Both my husband and I have not missed an episode and can’t imagine not seeing more of the Duque family saga. The cast is outstanding, the music exceptional, the scenery wonderful and the story real. In a time when network viewing has gone to too many reality shows we find CANE a plus to the weeknight line-up. Please don’t cancel this great show.

CANE is not only the best new show on CBS since CSI, it’s simply the best new show on TV in years. CANE has everything. I simply wonder if a mainly latin cast can make it in America. It’s a shame that in this day and age a great show like CANE has even a slight possibility to being cancelled. It has heart and does not settle for the same old thing we always see on TV these days. When reality shows have more viewers than a good drama, it’s a sad time in the USA. PLEASE KEEP CANE TO PROVE IT CAN GAIN A SOLID FOLLOWING!

i started watching Cane while in Australia and I was so upset to come back to States and find out that it is possibly canceled. Please don’t do this. We need some new drama in the evening. Remember Dynasty, Dallas, Falcon’s Crest, only to name a few.

I love this show. Its got a great, talented cast and an involving storyline. If they give this show some time and an advertising push it could really shine. The star power alone should get it renewed for a second season. I look forward to it every week and I really hope they keep it going.

‘Cane’ is a good drama. It reminds me of the good ol’ days in drama shows like ‘Dallas’ ‘Knots Landing’ ‘Falcoln Crest’ and ‘Dynasty’! It compliments the campy drama of ‘Desperate Housewives’! Don’t cancel it, give it a chance CBS!

I have waited for a show that grabs my attention and keeps me wanting for more . Cane does that for me. It is definetly the shortest hour on tv. I haven’t missed an episode yet.
It is the only show I look forward to each week.I love it and I think the actors on this show are amazing. Wake up CBS. Canes turned me back onto TV again , as I am sure it has for others .

I like the show because there are moral dilemmas for Mr. Vega. He isn’t a creep - he is caught up in things where the use of force seems to be the only way, and then he has to pay the price of it. Meanwhile, he has a family which actually seems to try to love one another. It’s a struggle, but they persist in the face of suspicion and difficulty, and they run into a culture which doesn’t hold those same values. I personally know the value of a strong Latin family (being an associate member of one, and having been raised a Catholic). I am seriously grateful for the good things from the Mediterranean world. In spite of “I Claudius”, it isn’t all decadent. I am also sick and weary of the hardness of a lot of modern life. This is a fine, beautifully colored escape. It plays to the heart mostly, but the head is also involved when someone like Vega has to trim his moral sails close to the wind.
As a viewer in the stands, I would let this gladiator live to fight another day….

Cane is my favorite show. I’ve been telling all my friends to watch it - doing my small part to keep it on the air. I agree with Buck that you’d have to be crazy to cancel such a quality show. If I were a network exec, I’d put it in a different time slot & see what happened. More people just have to discover it. It has the potential to become another “Dallas”-type blockbuster. Give it more time, please!!!

Okay, I have missed a few episodes of Cane, because CBS has aired other shows in its timeslot. I think the problem is the network, CBS is not hot enough to contain a show like Cane. I wouldn’t of even knew about this show if I didn’t by chance see an article in the newspaper. Like alot of other people I do not look at CBS at all. With all the trash that is on TV I would be sick if this show was booted. By, the way where can we find out if the show was cancelled for real?

I say RENEW the program. Are you kidding!!!!! Its one of the best programs since SOPRANOS.I watched it every Tuesday night faithfully and all of a sudden it went off with no warning. Whomever were the JERKS and RACIST that said if its based on Cubans do it in Cuba. We didn’t say the SOPRANOS is about ITALIANS so do it in ITALY. people are idiots I say RENEW the show or I will be one less person watching CBS. Cane is the only reason I started watching that channel to begin with and then afterwards I started watching the news. NOT ANYMORE…..
