Journeyman: Renew or Cancel?

Posted on 30 November 2007 by Bill Gorman

UPDATE: NBC has cancelled Journeyman. It will not return.

journeyman.gif

NBC’s Journeyman, Monday 10PM Eastern, was thought to be the successor to the Quantum Leap ['89-'93] franchise for time traveling.

It’s got a great location [San Francisco, personal bias alert], a good actor [Kevin McKidd, Lucius Vorenus of HBO's Rome, more personal bias], but could it catch the same Quantum Leap spark?

With our own chance to jump into the future we ask: Renew or Cancel?

NBC has not been setting the TV world on fire this fall, and even with that low bar for comparison Journeyman’s ratings have been last for NBC new shows each and every week.

Among all new shows, Journeyman’s ratings have beaten only new CW and Fox shows on a regular basis.

How is it doing against its competition on Monday?

Journeyman’s ratings started off fine, beating The Bachelor in some age demos its first two weeks.

Since then, it’s been all down hill. Journeyman’s ratings have stabilized, although at a low level, in the past month. Producers have hinted they’ve saved the best for last. They may have saved it too long.

12/4 UPDATE: Added the 11/26 numbers and Journeyman ratings did pick up as some predicted and it was #2 in all categories.

12/20 UPDATE: Added the 12/10 numbers.

(*10/22 data is Live, all other data is Live+SD, useful for rankings but not viewership trends).

Conclusions

Negatives

  1. Journeyman ratings are now consistently last place in its timeslot in all demographic categories among major broadcasters.
  2. Journeyman ratings are near the bottom compared to all new broadcast shows from ABC, NBC and CBS.

Positives

  1. Journeyman is set in San Francisco! The lead actor played Lucius Vorenus in HBO’s Rome! Ok, straw grasping is over.

Verdict: Cancel. Sadly, there is no past, or future, for Journeyman.

NBC has announced that the last 2 available episodes of Journeyman will air December 17th and 19th. That completes the 13 originally produced episodes. I doubt there will be more.

12/12 Update: NBC has let the option on more Journeyman shows lapse, effectively cancelling it after the fresh episodes air.

  1. How about “positive: it’s great television”? People don’t even care enough to comment about it on your blog. It’s a shame, as it’s one of the most over the top purely entertaining dramas on TV with a killer cast, even if it doesn’t aim to be truly great television.

  2. David, did it get a lot better in the last month? I’ve stopped watching, but am willing to give it another chance.

Here’s a positive though — its ratings this past monday were up ~10% over 11/19 and it took 2nd in the 18-49 demo for the first time since its premiere. All of that is probably just a function of ABC running October Road against it, but still…

  3. Bill Gorman says:

I really tried to hang in with the show as well, for many reasons, but once the conflict in the present with his brother became such a big deal it just became tiresome.

I will likely watch the episodes on Dec 17 & 19 though. If only to see if they really did finish with their best stuff.

  4. rick says:

Cancel. Nothing good, nothing bad, just not average enogh

  5. Jennifer says:

It had a decent enough premise, I enjoyed hearing the songs from the various years he jumped to, but, in the end it just wasn’t enough to hold me. I watch way too many shows as it is, and since I’m trying to cut down, Journeyman just wasn’t good enough to make the “watch list”. Sorry, but I won’t miss it. Cancel

  6. Chandra says:

    I’ll miss “Journeyman.”

The show isn’t Must See for me, but I did catch every episode because I refuse to watch “The Bachelor,” I’ve got a serious case of “CSI” overload, and I wouldn’t bother with “October Road” if it was the last thing on TV–the pilot last year was torture enough.

NBC should stick with “Journeyman” for one reason: the series, which is already better than average and outfitted with an excellent cast, has potential to improve. I believe the wait would be worth it.

Give it the back nine and then proceed from there.

  7. mike says:

I agree with the first commenter: this show IS great television. The problem is that the moment my wife and I realized it was great television, we also realized it would be pulled off the air. After all, you can please all of the people all of the time just so long as what you please them with is empty-headed, brain-eroding, so-called reality-oriented (i.e., fake but looks real), and shows gratuitous sex or violence.

  8. herman says:

Cheers to mike — yep – is there room on tv for a program where a guy goes back in time, meets an old fling, does NOT sleep with her because he’s faithful to his wife, and has to juggle a family, job, and external pressures (i.e., time travel) but doesn’t end up in a strip club drunk and lost? Of course not. The show was doomed from the outset. But for those of us who live the naturalistic version of this life, we’ve loved the show and will mourn its loss.

  9. Bonnie says:

It took me forever to get into this show, but it is MUCH better than it was in the beginning and is as good as the other dramas/adventure shows out there… it’s too bad it couldn’t have offered a little more in its first few episodes… I think that sunk it.

  10. Dirk says:

I have to say that this show has quickly become my favorite show on tv. I watch too many shows as it is and had to make some tough decisions on what shows I was going to drop. Journeyman has continued to get better and better, the lead character is the most genuine I’ve seen in a good while. I am a big fan of this show and where the story has taken us.

  11. Chris says:

GREAT SHOW!!! The trouble is, it is for people who usually find tv to be so empty, low-minded and worthless as to hardly bother. This show is INTELLIGENT, with GREAT PACING, AWESOME ACTORS, a story that keeps us coming back for more, and it is THE BEST THING ON TV IN A LONG TIME. Unfortunately, NBC is considering pulling it without giving it time to build its audience and with almost NO PROMOTION to help it along!!!

  12. Shaun OMac says:

Journeyman should be on earlier and not buried in that time slot.

Many have said that JM is a USA Network type show. I say NBC film the back nine and air them on USA and then you can air them..

In the meantime, its Aspirin to NBC for Journeyman..Drugstore.com has Rite Aid Aspirin for $1.99 ship your Aspirin today to NBC!! They said they would donate the online purchases to various charities.

  13. John Kolbert says:

I think this is a great show! I agree that the conflict with his brother got annoying, but luckily things are getting better. Of course, with only two for sure episodes left, I hope they can give us some sort of conclusion.

  14. cyn says:

    RENEW JOURNEYMAN.
    PLEASE!!!!!

  15. Stephanie says:

This show is great. It should be renewed. It’s a show that has consistently gotten better. I’ll admit, it was slow in the beginning, but what show isn’t? You need to start somewhere. Kevin is a great actor and the rest of the cast is on par with him. There’s just soo many problems, one is that NBC isn’t doing anything to promote this show, it’s like USA with The 4400 and The Dead Zone (another story for later folks lol!)! Where is the promotional team for Journeyman? Clearly, the only promotion that Journeyman is getting is from it’s fans. And also, I think the timeslot, althought, honestly, I thought was gonna be good, as it is after another somewhat, sci-fi show, Heroes, it’s turning out to be bad. Maybe another time slot would be nice.

This show has it’s viewers thinking because of what’s been going on, jeez… NBC just give it a chance… I’d hate to see such a great show go to waste, but NBC just seems to be doing that. No wonder why I don’t watch you NBC… you barely publize your shows… especially the underrated good ones. I almost thought Journeyman was The Dead Zone… Sorry, but this was just my two cents.

  16. Tim says:

RENEW! If you like veg TV, you won’t get this show. It is awesome, and has so much more to offer than Quantum Leap ever did. The conflict you refer to is pretty much coming to a head since Jack saw Livia in Blowout.

If NBC gives J-Man the ‘Back Nine’, maybe more people will get it and see how great this show actually is. Dig deep, you will find plenty of gems.

    ~Tim

  17. Lisa Magee says:

This is a great show. It’s only one of three shows that my brother and I can agree on. He’s 33 and I’m 50, so that’s quite a demographic stretch. We’re tired of investing in shows that get cancelled. There are usually two or three each season. Each time this happens, we watch fewer and fewer new network shows, instead watching movies or cable, so we avoid the disappointment and the lack of closure when the new shows are cancelled.

  18. Andrew Ambrose says:

For sure the best show I’ve seen in a long while! Have seen every episode and they just keep getting better. I too am tired of investing in shows for them to be cancelled! Keep Journeyman!!!

  19. Neon says:

    Renew or cancel?

RENEW! Absolutely. Journeyman is the most “Must See TV” show on air this season; better than any new drama on NBC, ABC, or CBS, in my opinion. Great writing, characters and actors, plot development, and it is so clever. It would take an essay to fully convey why this show is “Must See TV” and should be renewed. Which probably doesn’t technically fit with a “by the numbers” supposition.

    Thanks,
    Neon from Alabama

  20. Neon says:

PS — do we commenters get to vote as to whether a show should be renewed or cancelled? I can’t find a link…

  21. paul studdard says:

Journeyman is much better than Bionic Woman. It is one of my favorite shows. There are few shows that I go through trouble to watch. Journeyman and The Office are 2 of them. Can this show get picked up by a smart network like USA?

  22. Sarah S. says:

Pity that there is such bad press about Journeyman, because it is one of the most intelligent shows on television at the moment. I am one of the few people who never got caught up in the reality craze and, despite having cable, rarely watch TV. Journeyman is one of two shows I DO watch.

I enjoyed the slow unfolding of good storylines and the interweaving of his family life, work life, and time travel all as the focus of the show – and not just making it about one particular plot. There are always multiple things to keep the viewer interested, especially recently.

For those of you who complained about the Jack/Dan conflict, it was a storyline arc that just came to a resolution. It wasn’t something that was going to continue throughout the show, and I am one of the people who believes that Journeyman has gotten much stronger as a TV show as a pilot. I didn’t believe that the pilot was the show’s strongest selling point, and NBC doesn’t do the show justice with decent promos, but I feel that Journeyman can build a good-sized fanbase — especially if they took advantage of their ability to run repeats on the Sci-fi channel or even USA.

  23. Lindsay H. says:

Journeyman is probably the best show I’ve seen on television in a decade or more. I’m a lover of sci-fi, and it’s been thoroughly refreshing to see a program as well-written and well-acted and straight-faced as this in a genre that I generally expect to be rather cheesy and overdone. It’s also been refreshing to see real characters who have realistic flaws and genuine emotions amid all the other tv shows that only seem to be trying to outcool eachother.

I was hooked from the start, and it’s only gotten better with each episode. Journeyman is truly one of a kind, and I look forward to seeing it continue.

  24. Dave says:

Pity that you cut off the ratings before adding last weeks…it’s on a bit of a surge, and it was actually 2nd out of NBC’s 4 new shows last week in most ratings categories.

It’s slowing catching on, because it’s a great show! The cream always rises to the top! This one is my favorite new show of the year. Chuck is 2nd. Pushing Daisies is 3rd.

  25. Mike says:

This is by far one of the better shows on TV and I rank it right up there with Battlestar Galactica in terms of edge of your seat suspense and the mythology.

I think people don’t get this show because there is no ‘villain’, no one to not like. This is just a show about a guy who’s experiencing something extraordinary and how he and his family deals with it.

This is reality TV, not some made up shows with fake crime labs that don’t exist in the real world cheesy plot dramas and sweep stunts.

This show should be given a chance to at least finish season 1.

  26. Mary Ann says:

Renew! Journeyman is my favorite show this fall. It’s uniformly well acted, and the creators are doing a fantastic job of putting together a satisfying story arc, gradually answering some questions while raising others, and skillfully weaving plot elements from earlier episodes into later ones. The premise of Journeyman may fall into the sci-fi category, but the heart of the show is the affect on Dan’s life in the present and the relationships between the four leads.

  27. Jean says:

RENEW!! This is the only show out there that I watch faithfully. What a nice change to watch a show that proves it’s possible to be interesting without overdosing on sex. Great story, perfect casting.

NBC, don’t be so quick to give up on this great show.

  28. bb says:

The show took some time to establish the back-story, but is now hitting it’s stride and just finished an outstanding two-parter. As with many great shows of the past (M*A*S*H, Hill Street Blues, West Wing), it took a little time to establish an audience even though it was quality viewing from the start. The ratings are rising, and it deserves renewal just on quality alone. This will be a mainstay for many seasons.

  29. Sean S says:

RENEW!!! One of the best shows on TV!!!

  30. boris says:

I believe that JM should be on Sci Fi…I know Sci Fi will find a better time slot for it. The NBC time slot if a graveyard for such great television. isn’t NBC and SCIFI part of the same family…..They should save this show…..I among many other are tired of getting to love a show just to see it canceled…

  31. Brandon says:

Renew. Even though the production has deminished (they no longer shoot in San Francisco), the writing and storyline has improved. The show is more interesting and complex. I am looking forward to the final two episodes of this season and hopefully after the writer’s strike ends NBC will option for more episodes.

  32. Terry says:

I love Journeyman. I’m a great target audience…33-year-old professional. I think the only thing that may be wrong with it is that it might air an hour too late for some of the target audience. They should move heroes and Journeyman BACK an hour.

  33. Francine says:

I really hope they renew it … I love this show and I watch it every week. I really feel they should save it because there is a fanbase out there and it could move to sci-fi or usa.

  34. Ben says:

I absolutely love this show and would be so disappointed if it ended after 13 episodes…you can just feel an X-files’esq following brewing with each episode.

  35. Amy says:

Don’t cancel this show! Go here to find out how to help save it: http://savejourneyman.net/2007/12/04/rally/

  36. Jeff says:

This show is now one of my favourites. I vote for renewal. Any other Canadians out there agree?!!?

  37. John up North says:

Before the season started, I thought this show had a decent premise and thought it could be interesting. I was underwhelmed by the pilot episode, but continued to watch. I’m glad I did: this has become my favorite new show of the season.

As others mentioned, it has great writing, a wonderful cast, and it continues to improve. As a downside, the continuing storylines are making it difficult for new viewers to tune in (though the recent rise in viewers is a promising sign, even more so when we realize the last episode was the Conclusion of a two-parter).

Journeyman could easily become this year’s “Lost” or “Heroes”, if given a chance. I hope NBC sees its value. [Maybe he needs to 'leap' onto the set of Friends circa 1990?]

  38. Hugh F. says:

Renew! This is the best written and acted show on TV.I don’t usually comment on these “save the shows”, but this one has grabbed me. It blows the others on Monday Night away!!

  39. Heather says:

RENEW! I agree with other’s sentiments. This is the first NBC show I’ve watched in years, and think it is wonderful. If NBC can’t promote it properly, then I vote for it to be moved to a cable network that can.

  40. Adam says:

How can we save this show!?!?

I usually don’t follow shows week by week, but I saw a few episodes of this and it blew my mind. I love it. Let me know if I/We can do anything to stop NBC from cancelling this show.
    Thanks

  41. Tammy says:

RENEW this one! I just finished watching the last 7 episodes in one day (playing catch-up) and I really love this show. It was a little slow to start, but I gave it a second chance before deleting these episodes from tivo. Now I find that they are probably cancelling!!! I am so mad.

  42. Paul Robin says:

This is intelligent, well written and well acted television. This show has gotten better with each episode and deserves a chance. Please renew it. Once you get into it, it is addictive and must see tv.

  43. EB says:

This show is awesome! How can they cancel it. Its a show about second
Chances no screwing around. This is the only show my wife and I look forward to every week. We will miss it!

  44. Duane says:

This is one of the few shows that I look forward to during the week. It is getting better (especially now that his brother knows about it).

Seinfeld is a classic example of sticking with something to see it through. Seinfeld started out really slowly – look how well it finished!

    RENEW!

    RENEW!

    RENEW!

  45. John says:

NBC should renew this show. It started off slow but its been getting better every week. There are still a lot of angles to play out. I’d hate to see it cancelled.

  46. PDG says:

Well NBC. You screwed the pooch on this one. I loved Journeyman as well as all my friedns and now you have pulled it. This is the second straight season where you idiots have pulled Quality programming and put absolute CRAP in its place. SHAME on you. SHAME. I am now BANNING all of your networks all together. You can have your law and order. Way to go Morons. It seriously Pi$$e$ me off that this show is pulled. GE – are you listening. Find some execs that know what the hell they are doing. They are getting it ALL wrong these days. And another thing – can someone put ER out of its misery. The show sucks. Its dead people. It is the only humane thing to do now.

  47. Rob says:

I really like this show. Great acting, good story line, good sub plots. Mystery. Who is that Professor and what does he really know? What is up with the FBI knowing they always get tripped up by money? There is so much going on. With all of the mindless “stuff” on television it has been fun to look forward to a show with actual “writing” and plot and twists. If this show gets canceled, I hope they keep the writers together to give us something else meaty. Oh, I forgot, this is NBC.

  48. Rena Moretti says:

To rad all the responses, you’d think Journeyman was that high-quality, amazing show.

Why did it lose so much audience then?

I personally found it completely uninteresting. Not as awful as Bionic Woman, but then again what is?

  49. cyn says:

you know, I’ve watched this show from the beginning and it has only gotten better. Besides the fact that it takes place in the Bay Area (where I’m from), it’s an interesting show. Because it is a new, every week I wondered how it was going to do and it has kept me entertained. And just when we started to find out more about Liv and her ‘real’ life? That really sucks.

  50. Nick says:

I understand the ratings are not in the top 20, but if you look at the overall viewership this year, everything is down. Journeymany is within a point or two of being in middle or upper half of the pack. And it’s attrached most all of its viewers on it’s own since there has been very very little promotion by NBC. Can only imagine it’s potential if NBC would actually market it, but I’m betting if its a 5 or 6 without advertising, just a little adversiting would bump it up to 8.0 range and move it right to the front of the pack. TWO EPISODES LEFT. PLEASE NBC, DO SOME DAMN MARKETING and you’ll be rewarded with good ratings and it will justify another season. You just need to get this show into peoples faces. With a 10 PM time slot and no adverstising, I’m shocked any knows about it at all, but they clearly do and those that do, probably had to work hard to find it, indicating some very loyal fans of the show. Get it marketed right and this could be the next 5-8 year run show.

  51. BJ says:

Cannot believe they are canceling the most entertaining show on television. Must watch TV, in my opinion. Great cast, stoylines and writing. Perhaps too hard to follow for younger viewers, with some of the storylines revolving around news grabbing headlines, from 20 or more years ago.

Very sad, but maybe someone will start a letter writing campaign sinilar to the rescue effort for Cagney and Lacey years ago.

  52. Tina says:

BOO to NBC!!!!! Yet another great show canceled. Please keep Journeyman going!

  53. Redzone says:

There has been a Rice A Roni and letter campaign, which you can read about here:

    http://savejourneyman.net/2007/12/05/send-rice-a-roni-to-nbc-to-support-journeyman/

It worked for Jericho, so why not?

    Also, there’s an online petition:

    http://www.petitiononline.com/jmf/petition.html

Other than that…it really sucks that NBC had decided to cancel. I’m hoping the devoted fans will change their minds. It sounds like they don’t want to cancel it but can’t justify keeping it right now.

  54. Kristen says:

I LOVE this show! It’s one of my top-3 favorites! I want it back!

  55. Diamond says:

RENEW!! This is a great show. It seems that my favorite shows this season are all going by the wayside; first “Big Shots”, and now “Journeyman.” I don’t like it one bit. I guess I should just wait to see if a show will make the grade before letting myself get interested.

  56. ron ande says:

RENEW it is great television and the writing keeps getting better…new people are in the know about what he can do..so many places to go..as long as writing stays sharp//the actinging is great..good ever evolving back story

  57. Barry says:

This is sad that they are going to 86 Journeyman. Its so insightful and intelligent compared to all the other schlock on TV like Grey’s Anatomy. It isn’t all just people having affairs and/or shooting one another. It kept getting better and better each episode. This is sad. NBC cancels good shows that do have decent ratings and replaces them with stuff that they cancel anyways. Second in all those demo categories isn’t bad at all. Does anyone remember ED? NBC canceled that when it was still pulling 7 to 8 million viewers a week and everything they replaced it with failed miserably, like LAX, and Hawaii. Plus how do they justify canceling Journeyman when Las Vegas which is on Friday night pulls the same kind of numbers is in its 5th season, and is so lame and offers nothing but T and A. NBC just doesn’t have any execs who know what they are doing. Some shows are a smash hit like LOST and some need to build an audience and will pay the bills but maybe just not have the mega numbers like a House does. Well I hope somehow maybe it will get picked up. I think USA or some cable network should pick it up. NBC owns Bravo. Renew it and air it on Bravo, I mean these would be awesome numbers for cable, if not for network. Its a very insightful show and builds as it goes, and things become connected and its just so good. The mysteriousness around all of it is great as well and I will miss it greatly if it never comes back.

  58. Rena Moretti says:

I found it as uninteresting as The Nine, another quickly canceled Alex Graves show.

As for Las Vegas, I don’t think that show’s coming back next year either. I think they’re trying to build up the number of shows for syndication, where it may or may not do all that well.

  59. Paul says:

I’ve watched this show since the very first episode and i just love the premise of the story. The show kept me watching because the story and acting. The main character is very interesting.. I thought this is a good addition to NBC’s Monday line up and I was watching Heros then Journeyman every Monday. NBC please give them another season to prove what I already know is a excellent show with great stories and great characters. RENEW

  60. Rena Moretti says:

NBC can only renew so many shows with bad ratings.

Renewing shows with bad ratings and re-launching them again and again is how they got where they are now.

  61. lance says:

the show is great, perhaps the time slot is bad but it has a draw back for increasing its audence if you come in the middle you are lost and can’t grasp the plot A lot like LOST but it had a better time slot which hooked a loyal audence but then again ABC has always had much smarter executives

  62. Jake says:

Renew! It’s a great show, and it’s not like there’s a whole lot of other good stuff out there. I’m getting tired of investing my time in the fall schedule to have most shows yanked. HBO, here I come.

  63. patty says:

    Renew!
This is the best show on television!
Great characters all with great chemistry.
    Storyline intriguing.
    Give it a chance.

  64. Jason says:

    Renew!!!!

This is the smartest, most entertaining show on TV!!! I didnt realy get interseted until week 4 but then i was hooked!! NBC this a sleeper hit and will be huge next year…NBC isstuoid to let it go i hope ABC or CBS, Fox WILL PICK THIS UP!!

  65. George says:

If there is any hope left…. RENEW the show!! Look at the issues that have been tackled with the last few episodes. Is it too thought provoking for the average viewer? That’s the only reason I can think of when I see some of these negative comments.

  66. Matt says:

This show was kinda slow in the beginning but the last few episodes were just amazing. Best show i’ve watched in a while. Please renew!!

  67. Nona says:

I agree with George. Renew!!! This show was good in the beginning and has only gotten better as more has been revealed about the characters. I have heard that good drama costs more to produce than those ridiculous reality shows that the networks are determined to force down our throats while playing to the lowest common denominator, but if they don’t want to keep an interesting show like Journeyman on for viewers with a brain and a little imagination, they could, at least, send it to cable so we can choose between the prime time garbage of reality shows and something with a little more substance. Bravo, USA or SciFi would be fine with me. I pay for that and don’t have to edit out nearly as many commercials on the TIVO.

  68. Martin says:

Renew. This is/was my favorite show of the new season. The second half of the 13 episode order was beyond compare, so you can just imagine what a full season or two would produce. They just got their legs. Let them run!

  69. jason says:

Renew, this show gets better and better with each episode. While this may not be my top show it seems that with each passing episode it goes up a notch in my top 10! The episode where Zach wasn’t born and Dan had a daughter instead(Caroline) was heart wrenchingly good! renew renew renew!

  70. Carroll Albarado says:

My family and I love the show, Journeyman, and looked forward to it every week, and now it’s being cancelled. Who is making these decisions. The great acting, storyline, and endearing human elements gave us a positive ‘feel good’ hour in a week filled with mostly garbage programs. You gave us a great show and now have yanked it away from us. NBC needs to have a bit of foresight and patience, and realize that Journeyman had great potential. Remember ‘Mash’, that show had problems with ratings it’s first year. – The cancellation of a quality show such as Journeyman saddens us and discourages us from investing time and interest in other NBC programs. … Sadly, Carroll & Roz

  72. Dan says:

I can’t say enough how much I, a 23 year old male, has taken time out of my monday (and wednesday) nights to watch this show as it appears on air. However, many of my peers are too busy and will watch it on nbc.com or download it as a torrent. This isn’t taken into account with Nielsen ratings. PLEASE HELP SAVE JOURNEYMAN! Look for the Rice-a-Roni campaign and donate!

  73. Andy says:

Renew. This is the best show on TV right now. Best writing, character development, actors, production. Please keep this one on the air…

  74. Joe V says:

Chuck, Heroes and Journeyman was a solid line up. We set the TV to NBC and didn’t change it all night. Hell I actually looked forward to Mondays! This is a ridicules disservice to every one who doesn’t work for one of the other networks. Whoever made this call needs to be canceled, before they sabotage NBC any further.

  75. Eytan says:

I was really impressed by how much it picked up once the brother was in on it, and the last episode was stellar. It will be disappointing to see it removed from the air, even though it is pulling second against a very tough CSI Miami. I’d take it over CSI Miami every day. There have been many years since I had a solid NBC 3 hour lineup I watched, PROBABLY since the days of Hill Street Blues on Thursdays, going back 25 years to Fame, Cheers, Taxi, Hill Street Blues…
I guess I’ll probably be back to a 2 hour timeslot on Mondays once Journeyman disappears (probably better for me anyway). I hope they reconsider once the strike is over and order up 13 more episodes to see how well it can do…

  76. Sara says:

Renew the show!!!!! What are they thinking????

  77. Rena Moretti says:

They’ve already seen how well it can do, I’m afraid and it didn’t deliver.

NBC needs to move on and try a bunch of new shows to try and find itself some real hits.

  78. Jonathan B. Kinberg says:

    Keep it for sure!

It will take time for an audience to find it, but I belive it will find a loyal following. I believe it’s the best show of the current season.

Great actors, good writing, and clever directing. I think it could become an anchor show for a strong night’s line-up

    Jonathan B. Kinberg

  79. Rena Moretti says:

The audience HAS found it… and didn’t like it.

As for the clever directing I disagree. But then again I never liked the work of Alex Graves all that much. I think he’s way over rated and works best as a staff director under the direction of a strong producer (ie. the West Wing).

  80. Tom West says:

Renew! Renew and watch it grow and become a classic show drawing loyal viewers across the board. come on NBC have some faith. invest in a show a little – that was your signature move in your golden days. letting the numbers grow, supporting a show and developing a following.

This one has GOLD written all over it!

  81. Drew Doyle says:

RENEW! This show and Life are the best two new series. This show is VERY well written and not a simple rip of Quantum Leap. It’s very fair to say that the show struggled initially and the brother drama was a big overdone and annoying. But, the last several episodes have been stellar. I would think that a good show like this (well written and smart) in a good time slot would appeal to a demographic with a higher disposable income… but, I suppose that’s not how the networks see it because toilet cleaners pay as much in advertising as cars and other high-end products.

  82. Marla Snyder says:

My husband and I watch this show religiously, and can’t believe it’s coming to an end. Is there a protest line we can call at NBC? Seriously! I’m not one to get involved in any TV show, but I’m involved in this one. If the time slot is the issue, why don’t they just change it & save one of the best shows on TV? I don’t get it…there are some pretty lame shows airing that should be shelved. Now there is finally one with a bit of substance, and poof! It’s gone.

  83. Sawyer says:

My husband and I love this show. It is insightful and smart, unlike a lot of things that are on tv these days. We were very disappointed to hear that the show may not be picked up for another season. We say RENEW, RENEW,RENEW!!

  84. Rena Moretti says:

NBC keeps on renewing shows that aren’t doing well, like Friday Night Lights but keeps on not picking the ones with potential.

  85. Vickey says:

I just can’t imagine Journeyman not be renewed. It is one of the greatest shows that I have seen. The actors are ace and the story lines intriguing. I never miss it even if I have to work during it, I catch the webcast. I am a fan of “Heroes” but “jouneyman” is even better. It is so much more intelligent than the other programs. This is the first time I have posted but saving “Journeyman” is that important to me. If there was something I could do to keep it from being cut, I would. PLEASE NBC RENEW JOURNEYMAN!

  86. Lou says:

I’m 44 years old and I rarely watch TV shows. I’m truly down to 2 must see TV shows (which I really catch online)…Heroes and Journeyman. And truthfully, I was enjoying Journeyman more than Heroes. In ‘The Hangman’ episode, I’ve always wondered if something slightly changed in my life, “would I have a son instead of a daugther?” and this episode showed me that scenario. I was blow away by it and actually shed a tear. It’s amazing how timelines could change. Now, NBC is cutting my TV viewing by 50% (with the writer’s strike, it’s actually 100%). I bet the ABC, CBS and FOX networks are shaking their fists up in the air in a victory dance with NBC’s stupidity.

  87. Patrick K says:

Journeyman is one of those shows with multi-episode story arches. The problem is sci-fi has never been hugely successful on the mainstream networks where it has to compete against game shows and reality TV.

Journeyman needs to be moved to the Sci-Fi Channel to give it an targeted audience that will appreciate it.

  88. Bill Gorman says:

Patrick, I think that it’s not out of the question that Journeyman ends up on SciFi.

  89. Chris Maddox says:

    RENEW THIS SHOW!

It is a great cast, entertaining shows, and a very cool premise. How can Saved by the Bell have 13 spinoffs, & shows like Journeyman & Arrested Development get canned.

Is everyone on this country either watching Brittney or on meth? Help.

  90. jptlr5 says:

I am 52 yr old AA female … all I can say to NBC is time travel to 1966 “Star “Trek” low ratings for that show also …Please renew Journeyman or send it to Sci-Fi .. then I can totally stop watching network TV …

  91. Rena Moretti says:

About those campaigns to save shows… They never really work. The networks occasionally use them as rationale to keep a show on the air that they were going to keep anyway.

The press eats up gimmicky campaigns but don’t be fooled. They renew what they want to renew regardless of whatever campaign a minuscule minority of viewers do.

  92. Rick says:

    Incredible Show.

Its just hitting its stride and has such potential. RENEW PLEASE

  93. Stella says:

This is a great show. I’ve talked it up to so many people. Most of my friends have kids and so they record everything. They don’t discover series til midseason or even season two. Give those people a chance to hear about this show.

I love the interaction between the brothers and the relationship between Dan and his wife is one of the most natural, believable ones I remember seeing on tv. It’s not perfect, it doesn’t ignore sex, and it has nuances. So of course the show’s gotta be cancelled.

  94. Josy says:

RENEW! This is one of the best new shows this season. I love it and DVR it every week so that I can watch it uninterrupted. It is an intelligent, engaging drama and the acting is top-notch. I love the genuine interaction between all the characters too. Please don’t cancel this show!

  95. Rena Moretti says:

Anecdotal evidence to the contrary, most shows that keep dipping never climb back, and generally the only way to get them to climb back a little and not fall again is to constantly promote them (see The Office, Battlestar Galactica and Family Guy).

While some networks do indulge in that constant promotion game on a few shows, it’s usually (always?) a complete waste of resources.

It’s always hard to tell beyond the fact that the ratings never climb all that high and that the marketing campaign is unceasing (while lower-key than for a new release).

  96. Ashley Gibson says:

I, personally, have been addicted to the show since Day 1. After watching the first episode I immediately re-watched it via DVR, then demanded my hubby watch it the following day– he immediately loved it also. Since then I have suffered through each and every episode of Heroes, just waiting for Journeyman to begin each Monday night.

The cast is great, I love the story basis and the family dysfunction. It’s truly sad that the WGA was forced to go on strike, I believe otherwise new episodes would already be written and NBC executives could see where the series is going.

I say renew, at least for the duration of the season. I think NBC, CBS, and ABC all a like are too quick to pull the plug. Why try a mid season replacement that will, just like all th e others be a big waste of time also?

  97. JS says:

Simply put, Journeyman is probably the best show on television – great production, great cast, and great storylines. It’s a refreshingly intriguing and thought provoking show – obviously too good for network television. It’s possesses a great mix of genres – sci-fi, drama, family, etc. Listen up NBC; your current ratings system is broken. Like so many industries these days, you guys are behind the technological curve. If you continue with the type on prime time scheduling that you’ve undertaken the past few years, you’ll continue to lose network viewership.

  98. n.m. says:

I’m obsessed with any kind of time travel show or story. I tried watching Journeyman. After about half and hour I got tired of sitting there with my eyes glazed over in sheer boredom and switched off. I tried here and there again through the season and… nothing.

Problems from my perspective: Too slow, too wrapped up in the life of one person, too soapy, not enough of the time travel aspect to draw me in.

I am a hardcore geek though, so perhaps I’m not the target audience. It has some real characters, and some interesting social dynamics, but that kind of stuff is on every TV Drama so it’s boring to me. Necessary, but boring if that’s the main focus of a show I was expecting to be science fiction. Really, the show is more ‘magic reality’ in the literary sense, in that the sci-fi trope of time travel is being used as a tool to move the protagonist’s social story forward, rather than as a focus of its own. Nothing wrong with that at all, just not what I was expecting when I tuned in.

This show seems to be written for a non sci-fi audience, which is actually quite wise as while sci-fi fans are fervent, they aren’t a broad population base. However, its marketing seemed at first to be targeted towards sci-fi watchers, particularly since it airs after Heroes. This may have caused a problem in that the general audience often will dismiss new shows that are marketted as ’sci-fi’, and therefore the audience that would be most interested in following the social life of this guy week after week didn’t get into it at the outset, and subsequently are lost if they try to jump in mid-stream.

All that said, I don’t think it should be cancelled. Not at all. It needs to be marketted more generally, and possibly be paired with a different lead-in, maybe Medium. Just because I’m not watching it doesn’t mean that millions more shouldn’t get the chance.

  99. DERRICK says:

Please dont pull Journeyman! This is one of the best shows on the air. Besides Hero’s, This show sucks you in if you watch all the episodes. The cast is great, and it keeps me coming back for more. This show is the only reason to look forward to Mondays.

  100. Janis says:

Where’s the support group for those who will be in recovery without their favorite Monday night show?

Journeyman impressed me more and more from week to week. It was kinda like falling in love with that special someone. You know, first they catch your eye and think there might be something there. And then once you hang around them for a while, you’re hooked and you notice all the beautiful things about that person that not everyone sees. And then you count yourself as lucky that you found such a wonderful thing. Yeah, that’s how I felt about Journeyman, hehe.

Just let me process…I’m in recovery. Talking about the loss is part of the healing. *sigh*

Guess the kids and I will now look forward to watching???

“Baby, don’t leave. I know we can make this work.”

  101. Dave says:

Journeyman started off slow, but has become my favorite show on TV. Even my wife, who hates tv is now hooked on the show, and we are amazed that it will not be returning.

NBC has a quality product, with huge potential that can be very sucessful. If the execs can’t figure out how to make this work, they need to be in another profession.

  102. Johnson says:

Journeyman is one of the best shows that have been introduced over the past few years.

  103. Elizabeth says:

NBC–PLEASE BRING JOURNEYMAN BACK!!!!!!!!!! DON’T GIVE UP ON THE BEST GROUP OF ACTORS ON TELEVISION! Please air JOURNEYMAN on another channel or in a different time slot. Give more people a chance to “fall-in-love” with the show and the cast. Give die-hard fans a chance to see all the episodes again. JOURNEYMAN is the kind of show that my family and I can enjoy over and over. There is so much to glean from each episode.
THANK YOU NBC FOR THE BEST SHOW ON TV!

  104. Kevin says:

NBC–Please bring Journeyman back! It is one of the best shows on T.V. I look forward to watching it every week. The last few episodes were awesome. Has there been given any thought into switching nights or time slots? I can’t believe it is not going to be on anymore. Just when it was really getting good. It was must-see T.V. for sure over the last couple of weeks. Any chance Sci-Fi will pick up the series?

  105. ryan says:

I just watched the last episode online–and Im not suprised it is being cancelled–cause it is GREAT TV–but nBC is not interested in that-obviously- just look at some of the other series it produces–Please bring Journeyman back-but not on nBC-because it is the next big loser!!

  106. Shane says:

Go figure!! NBC finally comes up with a something fresh, and it is going to get cancelled. Probably some stupid reality show to take its place.

Reality shows are just a bunch of losers watching a whole bunch of other losers lives play out. How stupid!!!!

JOURNEYMAN!!! JOURNEYMAN!!! JOURNEYMAN!!! JOURNEYMAN!!! JOURNEYMAN!!! JOURNEYMAN!!!

  107. Rena Moretti says:

I think we’re in danger of seeing this site become flooded with repetitive fan messages trying to show support for their favorite shows.

Maybe it’s good for traffic, but I know that’s the reason I stopped looking at HeyNielsen.

  108. Bob Fuehrlein says:

I can’t believe NBC will not renew Journeyman!! I tape every episode and watch it at least 3 times. Its amazing how you can pick up on things you miss the first time you watch it. Its a show for very intelligent people so I can see where the ratings may not be there! But I guess if the powers that be at NBC have small minds then we will not be seeing any new episodes of Journeyman!!

  109. Larry Langhorne says:

Disappointed to Hear Joureyman is not being Renewed. With Football over – now is the time to have something good to watch on Monday nights
    Give it more time.

  110. Christina says:

I am sorry to see Journeyman has been canceled. This was one of my favorite shows and honestly the only show that was keeping me watching NBC after canceling Crossing Jordan.

Another thing NBC enough with the Law & Order’s, I have been a fan of the show for years but enough already. How about a fun upbeat show which I thought Journeyman was.

Also Please stop with the reality shows they suck. If I wanted to watch reality I will watch my own life, I watch tv for the break.

  111. unc8689 says:

Bummed out. really liked this show and was looking forward to more explanation as to what was going on and who was in control.

Oh well, I’m used to being one of the only ones in America watching the shows I like (i.e., West Wing, Studio 60, etc.).

  112. Tim says:

I say that they should RENEW it. It was an amazing show and i cant wait to see more of it…

I want a show that i really liked and this was one of them..

Reality shows suck they a bunch of stupid people acting dumb for attendtion. I hate that.

plz. i will like to see journeyman agian!!!!!!

  113. Rena Moretti says:

Am I the only one who’s annoyed to hear repeatedly from fans of low-rated shows how people who don’t like their show are, somehow, “stupid” because they don’t have the same taste?

    I mean, really…

  114. paul silvani says:

I think Journeyman was a great show. NBC should renew it and stick it on their SCIFI channel where it will probably get a much better audience versus on primetime NBC.

  115. Dave says:

Please renew Journeyman,,, The action, the storyline is great I watch every week

  116. Rena Moretti says:

I know SciFi is currently the repository of bad shows that nobody wants to watch (Flash Gordon, Battlestar Galactica, Dresden Files, New Bionic woman re-runs, Painkiller Jane, the list is long) but they need good programming to get out of their awful funk, not to bring rejects from NBC.

  117. Jamal Rashad says:

I was really surprised reading cancel post instead of save.
I won’t knock anyones opinion, Some people just don’t like SciFi shows, they can’t dispell disbelief long enough to enjoy it.
I think Everyone can agree that journeyman is an excellent show to add to any network in lew of some brainless reality or game show.
While at least half of us would love to watch this show instead of at least half of any other show on television or cable at any given time. I am a scifi guy and this is one of the best. What about those demographics??

  118. Rena Moretti says:

I for one, appreciate your politeness Jamal. :)

  119. dean says:

bring the show back it was what i looked forward to every monday please come back in time.

  120. Robert says:

I’ve just returned from a month in the UK, where Journeyman was one of, if not the only, new US show already being televised on UK TV. Working internationally between three continents, and unable to watch through the on-line link while outside the US, I very much enjoyed my Journeyman marathon here in the US this last week, streaming through some 2/3 of the 13-show repetoire, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had viewed the first 4 episodes at original airing, and focused on Journeyman as my favorite of the new offerings, as well as most of the old. I found the writing and acting superb, pushing the viewer’s thought processes and counting on recall from previous episodes, while keeping outstanding issues, such as the hijacking money, on a short leash by wrapping them up after a few episodes rather than leaving them open-ended and unanswered to the point of being buried so deeply we “forgot” about them, a la LOST.

Disappointing to now find Journeyman cut short, but with enough sense to not be left with an annoying, never-to-be-answered cliffhanger, as with some shows of the past. A pity for me, too, now that the show’s character’s “historical base” has increased, thus giving more opportunity for intertwined issues from previous travels, say like, “Remember what happened with the earthquake?” also cannot be explored. Or the potential paradox for altering time lines, and its consequences, such as with Caroline.

I’ll certainly pick up the DVD box set, which given the intense, if not limited, fan base, I assume will be produced.

  121. Patrick R says:

I think the show was great. It was intense, it had me wanting to come back for more to find out about the characters personal life. Quantum leap never kept my attension. I watched a few and was done. This show was different. Concept maybe the same, but story more interesting. I say try another night, putting it up against CSI is not good, to many people like that show.

  122. andrea belous says:

with the huge campaign to keep journeyman alive you would think NBC would listen to it’s viewers for once. If NBC won’t appreciate a good thing when they see it maybe they can move it to FOX or the Sci Fi Channel. Please don’t cancel this wonderful show. Give it the chance it deserves.

  123. bryan says:

Journeyman is a great show. Love it! Can’t believe you cancel it and give us CRAP like lipstick jungle???????????

  124. Brenda says:

I can’t believe they would actually cancel Journeyman! This network seems to be notorious for canceling good programming and keeping garbage. My whole family became fans of this show and were quite disappointed upon hearing about its cancelation. I guess we will all have to depend on CBS or Fox for our nightly entertainment. NBC doesn’t seem to have a clue!

  125. zachary says:

    Email NBC directly:

  126. Nevyn says:

This has been, in my opinion, the best new show for last year. A lot of great shows seem to be disappearing. The 4400 has been canceled (without concluding). Jericho has only been renewed for 1/2 a season after only it’s first season. The 4th season is the last one for Battlestar Galactica (though good on them for knowing when to end it). Avatar the last airbending is ending in a few more episodes.

Meanwhile 24 got renewed for 2 more seasons despite having, in my opinion anyway, it’s worst season yet last year.

  127. Sherry says:

The Journeyman is the best show to have come out in over a decade. This was one show I actually could not wait until the next episode.
The show made my day….the one show my husband
& I watched together. Everyone in my family and all my friens and co-workers love this show. Is it being cancelled because of ratings…please renew the contract & advertise during the week…those ratings will skyrocket. Please don’t allow a genuine, action packed, well acted show get the axe!!!

  128. Chelsea says:

    RENEW RENEW RENEW.

I love this show, watched every episode. I thought it was just off because of the strike, I had no idea it wasn’t coming back. I’m devastated. It was in my opinion one the best new shows out. I think NBC should give it another chance. Maybe move it to another time slot. Sometimes I think the tv execs don’t give a show enough time to develop a following. It takes time for people to start watching. Imagine if they had cancelled “Cheers” after this long, those ratings sucked in the beginning too, but boy did they pick up~!! BRING BACK JOURNEYMAN.

BUT I DO AGREE WITH THE OTHER GUY, THAT STUFF WITH HIS BROTHER WAS GETTING TIRESOME. JUST TELL HIM WHATS UP ALREADY – JEEZ!

  129. Melissa says:

Please bring back Journeyman!! I looked forward to each new episode when it was on and hope that they bring it back next season so that all of the mysteries can be solved!!!

  130. Jason says:

THIS WAS A GREAT INSPIRING SHOW. IT JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT THE ONLY THING THAT STAYS IS VIOLENCE, DEATH, SEX AND DRUGS. WHAT A JOKE THEY CANCELLED THIS SHOW. WHEN IS ENOUGH$$ ENOUGH? POSITIVE INFLUENCE IS SACRIFICED EVERY DAY AND VALUES ARE SOLD OUT TO GREED. THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE IF WE WERE EXPOSED TO INSPIRATION MORE THAN DESTRUCTION!

  131. Sam says:

Wow, who are the people Neilsen picks to monitor????
This was a great show. I looked fwd to it more than Heroes. Maybe most viewers just don’t have the brain power to get into a show like this. My brother and his wife couldn’t follow Lord of the Rings. Despite a way out there premise, the characters seemed very real, great chemistry.

I watched every single episode! And I bought 2 cars and a ton of shampoo from watching this show. Bring it back.

  132. Steinmiller says:

Journeyman was a great show and I blame NBC for its failure – Heroes should have flipped timeslots with JM – make the fanboys stay up later to catch their precious heroes and snag new viewers & ratings for JM at 9pm, its amazing how stupid networks are these days.

  133. rol says:

Bring back JM it was great !!!!!!!

  134. Karrie says:

I can’t believe they aren’t bringing this show back!!! Of allllll the shows from last year I would have picked this one to return. I was waiting for it! This sucks, bad choice made by whoever makes these decisions.
