Cane Surprises As New Show Winner
Against absent and some rerun competition, CBS’s Cane ratings increased 23% to a Live+SD viewership of 7.94 million and adults 18-49 viewership of 6.48 million to lead all new shows for the week of December 10-16.

Many new shows didn’t air this week, and others were in reruns. We may be replacing this post next week with something that’s more interesting than comparing the shrinking number of non-rerun new shows.
ABC new shows in general were overwhelmed, because of off scheduling and reruns for many of its shows. Private Practice ratings plunged, although it was not in a rerun. UPDATE: Originally omitted from the post: Samantha Who? ratings settled a bit more, way below their early season heights following Dancing with the Stars.
NBC’s Journeyman was its only new show to air, and kept its mediocre ratings trend alive.
Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares ratings increased 15% and its 18-49 viewership was strong. The weak competition is giving it new life.
CW’s Crowned ratings in its debut were quite strong, for the CW at least.
Even in rerun, CBS’ Big Bang Theory ratings were #3 for all new shows.
Our chart shows not only the viewership of the top 20 new shows, but also their week to week ratings momentum: shows gaining viewers [momentum > 1] and shows losing viewers [momentum < 1] over their last non-rerun airing. The bubble width is proportional to the 18-49 viewership.

Did you notice strange statistical bleeps that tend to make most of the shows of the same network go up (or down) on a given week.
I haven't made a systematic study of that but it looks like that to me.
Error and sampling rates often blur the true picture week by week, but trends end up showing up.

Wonder why Pushing Daisies lost almost one-third of its audience week over week?
Pushing Daisies had a great lead-in last week. This week it was essentially on its own.

Journeyman was by far my favorite, I haven't been that attached to a show since Star Gate. I am pulling out all stops to save it and encourage others to do the same!

I am so glad to see Cane came out #1 this time. That's where it should all the time. I am pulling for this show all the way. I am so addicted to this show. I love, love it. This is my favorite show of all time. To me and my family it's always #1.

Journeyman is my all-time favorite TV show. I can't remember when I've looked forward to Monday nights more. I wish NBC would reconsider and keep the show on. They have a hit show that no one knows about because they didn't promote it very well. Cancelling this show will be a loss for both the fans and the network.

i cant believe that they are going to cancel cane it is one of the best shows on tv i think we need to start a petition
i also want to comment on Journeyman its one of my favorite shows also i think that whoever makes the decisions to cancel shows needs to take another look and put them in time slots where people will know that they are on 10pm is kind of late for this show i think that alot of kids would enjoy it i know mine love it but i have to record it because of its time slot please reconsider.

I think the problem with renewing Cane is that is is very expensive to produce (and difficult to schedule as well). The demo is loyal but smallish (and the week 12/10-16 was a bit of an odd one) on which to make year-long decisions.
