NFL Blinks, Fans Win

NFL NetworkYour National Football League is still feeling festive and gives us an extra present on Boxing Day. A simulcast of the New England Patriots vs. the New York football Giants game as the Patriots quest for a season of perfection.

Previously the game was only to air on the NFL Network which currently doesn’t wind up being available in about two thirds of the homes in the United States. The game will now be simulcast on not just one, but two broadcast networks this Saturday night: CBS and NBC will both show the game. I’m really looking forward to the cumulative viewing numbers for the game but am not very optimistic the Giants will actually make a game of it. Nonetheless it will be the first three network simulcast in NFL History. It’s been almost 41 years since the last time two broadcast networks simulcast a game, Super Bowl I in January 1967, also featuring CBS and NBC.

According to Nielsen, people did actually watch TV on Christmas.  But we’re guessing almost all of the new HDTVs were in screensaver mode by primetime hours after watching 8 hours of NBA.  Only NBC had any new content last night, 2 hours of holiday-filled Deal or No Deal.  A nice little stocking-stuffer for Jeff Zucker though, it was enough for the peacock to win the night.

My Washington Redskins beating up on the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday Night Football won the night for NBC both in terms of overall viewers and the 18-49 demographic.  The Redskins kept their playoff hopes alive and  the night was almost all about football.  Football overrun and a 60 Minutes segment on New England Patriots’ quarterback and fan favorite Tom Brady did well for CBS.  The Amazing Race also did OK for CBS. Not much else outside of football worth mentioning, but you can check out the full half-hourly detail at Marc Berman’s site.

CBS barely nipped FOX for overall viewers and FOX won the 18-49 demographic. Holiday movies, reruns, a bunch of Saturday Night Live specials on NBC and a new America’s Most Wanted led another lackluster night of television viewing. More people might have watched T.O. hurt his leg while Tony Romo led the Cowboys to victory over the Panthers on the NFL Network.
