The “Strike Effect” Through January 21-27, 2008

No question from here on out, the WGA strike has completely changed the broadcast line ups.

However, for NBC that continues to be good news as its viewership vs. last year keeps improving compared to its level at the middle of this season before any strike effects. Fox continues to show gains from last year and is up to its levels in December, although it’s hard to isolate what is strike related.

ABC and CBS seem pretty clearly hurt by the strike as they continue to slip from their mid-season levels as their scripted shows go dark or rerun. The CW continues to slip downward, but they have so many problems it’s hard to guess where the strike fits in.

Our “Strike Effect” chart shows broadcast network primetime season to date average viewership for the 2007-8 season compared to the 2006-7 season.

Top Cable Jan 21-27: Minutemen Wins for Disney

Posted on 29 January 2008 by Robert Seidman

Zoey 101’s Jamie Lynn SpearsDisney’s movie Minutemen was the most viewed show on cable for the week, but scandal involving Jamie-Lynn Spears teen pregnancy lifted “wholesome” Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101 to the number 2 & 3 spots on this week’s top 20. In terms of cable “ratings” points, Zoey was actually number 1, but in terms of overall viewers she got pushed down a notch by Minutemen, which also scored the #10 spot in addition to the top spot.

The movie Life After People performed tremendously well for the History channel and the movie was the #4 cable show this week and the most watched program on the History Channel in its, uh, history.

SpongeBob could not crack the top 10, instead he merely took EVERY SINGLE SPOT in the last half of the list. So there is no relief this week for haters of the square-panted wonder!

USA managed to keep both hours of WWE RAW in the top 10 and Monk and Psych continue to be top 10 performers. The democratic debates last Monday (1/21) earned CNN another top 10 finish.

Miss America fans: the pageant didn’t make the top 20 in viewers, but 3.63 million tuned in to this past Saturday’s airing on The Learning Channel, up over 50% from last year when it aired on CMT.

Overnight Nielsen for Monday, January 28

Posted on 29 January 2008 by Robert Seidman

Hi folks, a combination of events including Marc Berman being at a conference and the President’s State of the Union Address mucked up the nightly numbers (from 9pm-10:30pm the State of the Union and the analysis afterwards had no commercials and so weren’t rated) for ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX which all aired the speech. There is no overnight scoreboard and there’s no data for 9p-10:30 besides the CW, sorry.

The overnight data will likely be half-hourly for the remainder of the week.

Last night’s full half-hourly details:
