Update: CBS Announced on 3/21/08 that it would not renew Jericho.

TVbytheNumbers.com hopes to be your home for Nielsen ratings data for Jericho. Beginning with the season 2 premiere on 2/12/2008 we will begin reporting data. We’ll have the overnight numbers up on our site (data Gods willing) on 2/13/08, and the final weekly LIVE plus SAME DAY DVR usage numbers will go up the following Tuesday (in the case of the premiere, we will post the final weekly numbers on 2/19/2008). It seems to me that the long breaks killed Jericho. The show lost 2mil viewers in the 11/29-2/21 break. The nuts campain probably got the Season 2 Premiere numbers to match the season one end, but with new viewers. The new viewers after watching probably said I got to watch the first season. I see the 5/9/07-2/19/08 losing another 2 million. Nine months is a long time. A lot of people were probably looking for these new 7 episodes around Oct'07.

  20. Bryan says:

Ya it looks like this is the last of Jericho. Too bad its another great show thats going to get axed for another reality show or some show that won't last 2 episodes.

I LOVE Jericho. I have never gotten involved in a 'save a show' campaign before but Jericho got me hooked. Neilsen just doesn't represent the crowd that watches shows like Jericho. The original Star Trek suffered from poor ratings and was canceled. Other great shows like Firefly were also never represented. It's just sad. I soo wish I was a Nielsen family.

Why is CBS not promoting it better? I'm no marketing expert but one thing I've learned as an avid consumer is that if you dangle the bait in front of me, I'm most likely going to bite. It's as if they truly don't want the show to survive. And these episodes are even better than last year's. I'm so annoyed. It's stuff like this that drove me away from network television to watch things on the internet or shows on cable. Any chance Sci-Fi would pick up the show and keep it going?

Why are there no demo numbers for this season of Jericho listed? I believe it did very well for the first episode but nothing has been listed for the two preceding episodes.

  30. Artzylady, Nielsen stopped providing the spreadsheets with all the demographic breakouts. Now unfortunately we're limited to only the list of top 25 shows in the 18-49 demo. Jericho wasn't one of those. for either of the first two episodes.

  33. samuricex says:

That sucks. This show is MUCH better than anything on those top ten lists.

  34. I have to cry foul. And I watched all of Jericho season one. One of the problems is that it's NOT always very well written (though sometimes it is!). It's pacing is HORRIBLY slow at times. Stargate Atlantis and Supernatural are two shows I've watched a ton of lately (in addition to Jericho) that week in, week out have better writing and pacing than Jericho. Both shows would no doubt out-perform Jericho if CBS ran them. CBS won't run them though because just like Jericho, the ratings wouldn't be very good.

How do Networks know how many people are watching a show. I think Nielsen families are an urban legend. I have never heard of one let alone known one. Do they actually exist? How many are there? Other than logging on to a Networks website how do they know anyone is watching? They claim increasing viewership will keep a show from being canceled but how will they know. Please answer as no one ever can give me an answer to this. Thnks

My mother, who is NOT a Jericho fan, had this suggestions…contact the sponsors of Jericho and let them know we're watching it and would appreciate them letting CBS know that we may not do business with any of the sponsors should it be cancelled.

I have a list of the national sponsors and their contact information. If anyone wants it, let me know through this board and I'll post it later.

  47. wes says:

I agree with andrea and brought this up on the jericho page here just how does nielson know what everyone is watching? I am 41 and have never been asked for my input and as far as i know nobody that i know has.

  48. Wes, I'd recommend looking up on Google or Wikipedia.org how market research and statistical analysis works and why it's not necessary to poll everyone (a census, which is very expensive) when you can simply do a sample to achieve roughly the same results.

not sure it's promotion … they put ads up during superbowl and made sad attempts during big brother … and i do mean sad. I am one of those the dvrs it and watches it later … but then again i do it with everything i watch. this last episode is killing me … i so wish people would just give it a chance … I even have my “princess” of a daughter hooked now.

I am a huge Fan of Jericho. i never heard of the show till my mother watched the show and told me that is was like nothing ever made before. I have to agree it came out at a time in the world that asked questions about the war in Iraq. I personaly think if they moved the time and date of the show to a night that FOX doesnt own the viewers.I would love if they kept Jericho alive even after this past episode 'oversight'. i would still watch the show if they move the show to the SCI-FI channel, i would also watch it if it was on CBS. i think the show is one of the best and most realistic shows ever made. i love shows that make me mad, sad, excited all in one show. that is what Jericho does to me. i have to talk about the show after the show had aired. Please keep Jericho on. As a fan i have to say, I am sick and tired of the Companies jumping around saying 'oh its cancelled' 'oh wait its not cancelled' stop toying with us i want the show to stay.

the nielsen ratings system is Very inacurate and flawed system , they have 35,000 people in 12,000 housholds making ratings decisions for the whole country. now that’s rediculous. we need a better way to count who watching tv programs.

Damn it, CBS isn’t doing a good job promoting the showm and at Tuesdays and 10pm…i got school and i wake up very early, i do my best to watch it, i have to record and i leave the TV on…i’m trying to get people to watch it but they want the first season and if not the time slot’s a problem…and when i watch other CBS shows like GW, Moonlight, Numbers i don’t see one Jericho promo, hell, Sci Fi’s doing a better job promoting it (saw a promo while watching Doctor Who)

Andrea…loved your Nielson box = urban legend line. We ought to put Mulder & Scully on that job, but I don’t think even they could find one. And like Mike says, why do a piddly amount of people make decisions for millions? I bet it would be an eye-opener for the networks if they found out what people are really watching. I don’t even watch Jericho, but that series is like The Godfather compared to the reality crap that gets dumped into our living rooms.

I believe marketing is the reason this show has such low ratings. I never watched Jericho until a few weeks ago. I rented the first season on DVD and my wife and I loved it. We caught up with season two on CBS website and are hooked. We DVR each episode now and can watch them over and over. I plan on buying season one DVD and loaning it to friends to get them interested. Maybe too little too late though. Wish there was more I could do to keep this show from getting axed.

Jericho is great. Unfortunately those of us with the intelligent and thinking ability to appreciate it are in the miniority. The majority of people would rather watch idiots make fools of themselves on reality shows like “Big Brother” or “Wife Swap”. I hope Jericho is renewed by CBS or at least picked up by SciFi with new shows.

May be we should all boycot CBS and let them really know what is going on. When ever there is a good show it gets axed. Then all we get is the burnt to a crisp reality shows. Surivor isnt that in its 100th season by now. That show is so done, you can only starve people so many times. CBS needs to get a clue, once Jericho’s season has ended boycot CBS.

It is a shame, but if season 1 moved as fast as season 2, this show would be the next ‘lost’. I missed about 6 episodes in season 1 and don’t even feel like I missed anything important in the show. Season 2 is moving fast and is exciting. They spent too much time on character development too early into the series, IMHO. Nuclear disaster and the focus is on the annoying Mayor and his wife.

    Season 2 is excellent TV…

I can add the LIVE+7 numbers in a few weeks after the fact (we only have #s for the 2/12 and 2/19 episode) I will add those #s in to the table above at some point soon until then, you can find them by looking at the Most Watched on DVRs category (look for he top time-shifted BROADCAST posts).

Robert, any theories as to why Jericho has been leeching viewers steadily since its premiere? With all the media attention after the show was brought back from the dead (you can’t buy that kind of publicity!), I would’ve thought ratings would’ve been much higher. Alternative ways of watching the show could allow for a somewhat higher viewership, but it’s difficult to explain a 50 percent drop from the first season premiere.

I think your suggestion earlier about the CW picking up the show is a good one. Any chance of that becoming a reality, do you think?

  89. Hanncoll: My theory is pretty simple: shows like this don’t have a huge mainstream appeal. Neither does the Star Trek franchise, the Stargate franchise or Battlestar Galactica. All shows with Internet buzz, rabid fans, etc.

My guess is that what hurt Jericho the most is that the first 3/4th of season 1 were not done all that well and viewers bled away.

As to the CW (or SciFi for that matter): I don’t know the economics well enough to know if they can produce the show and still make profits on those networks. My sense is that they could, but it would require everyone involved making less money. How much less and whether it’s worth it is data I simply don’t have available to form a truly informed opinion.

Jericho is the only show I’ve watched regularly and fervently on television in the last 8 years. No other show has even made me consider turning the set on. As a law student I have little free time, but I will always make room for Jericho. It is a GREAT departure from the typical crap generally available that the mindless masses seem to gobble up with insatiable appetites. Unfortunately, those masses are what make the money for the networks and good quality programming like Jericho I guess can’t compete =/

Thnks

Andrea, yes Nielson families really do exist….I was one of them about 4yrs ago….I’m not saying it’s a accurate system but I wanted to answer your question!

    JERICHO ROCKS!!!!!

I think they really did not know whether the show would be continued or not, but in my opinion, placing it in the 9:00 time slot was going to sink its ratings.

I think the plot branches are:

    1. “Revolution” – Jake starts the revolution and it is continued into a new season
    2. “Stop the Bomb” – Jake helps Hawkins stop the bomb and reveal the conspiracy

I thought you could tell last night by the way the episode spent so much time on the visions Jake had leading to revolution, only to then see him team with Hawkins to go to Cheyenne.

Bottom line: show’s done. But… wouldn’t it be awesome if SciFi picked it up, ran Season 2 from the start, picked the “Revolution” ending, and continued witha third season. Any hint of that – anyone?

“Only” 6 mil viewers? How many watch The Biggest Loser or some of those other “loser” reality and sit-com shows? And how do “they” get the numbers of viewers? How about those folks who record it and watch it later or a second time? Who at CBS has it in for Jericho anyhow? And just how many shows have been brought back by ardent fans – 2? If not peanuts, then what? Any ideas? This show has tons of potential with terrific characters and plot elements. PLEASE DON’T CANCEL! And let’s figure out some way to get to CBS and change, once again, the collective minds of the powers-that-be. Perhaps another network could pick up the show with its writers and cast members so it can go on. And what in the world can CBS replace Jericho with that would make me turn my TV to CBS? CBS used to be about the only station I watched; now, I find myself turning more and more to cable channels.

Nielson’s ratings are flawed. Now if EVERYONE in America had that little black box, the numbers would have been through the roof. But since they only count the people with the little black boxes, the numbers aren’t nearly HALF of the people who actually watched it. I am with many of you, I will no longer watch ANY CBS programming and will try my hardest to find a CABLE station to put JERICHO on!!!

I cannot believe you are canceling Jericho again.
This is a excellent show. I wait for it to come on every week.

I having been waiting this season for US of America to win. Jericho show has me crying, proud, angry (the stupid flag that is not the US flag), glad to see Mimi get engaged to have a family. Very angry the deaf girl was killed, but proud of her for defending her family and land.

Why can’t you find a place to put it where it has a chance to get a good rating? There are so many shows that are repeating, again and again, I would think you could find a time slot.

There is so much garbage and trash on TV we have only3 current shows we watch, (which are not reality tv shows) and old shows on TV Land.

We are watching less and less on TV. Why….too much junk. I don’t want to see any more people sing, dance, lose weight. reunions,
giving roses for “sex”, living in a house with people you don’t know, redo houses so people cannot afford them later, Oprah decide who is worthy.. have not watched and will not watch.
Dr. Phil to tell you how to live and what to do…yet he has an ex wife..People calling each other names on trash talk shows.

I work hard all down, when I turn the tv…(more and more I read books and leave the tv off) I want to enjoy the show, something to make me laugh…that is not filthy tv,

Bring BACK JERICHO…It could be a great show for years….

Please take into considerations your custom feelings.

This show could go on for 5 to 7 years easily. There are so many story lines.

I just sent a letter to the Sci-Fi channel, asking them to pick up Jericho-via snail mail (per request at their website).

Personally I am tired of the Nielsen Family choosing what I can and can’t watch that I don’t really watch much tv at all anymore. But until more people let the networks and cable channels know what they’re watching, again via snail mail, skewed ratings will be the death of many decent programs.

The sad thing is, Jericho was really something different. We’ve had cop shows, detective shows, reality shows, game shows and inane comedies shoved down our throats for so long the shows like this are a refreshing change of pace.

I have to say, I like it so much that I have haunted message board for the past two days trying to see if there are more wide-spread efforts going on to bring it back, other than the letter writing one to Sci-Fi. And believe me, this isn’t something I normally do. In fact, I have NEVER done anything like this before.

So, to the powers that be at Sci-Fi…you’ll be getting my letter early next week. Along with about ten million others, I hope!

I agree, Neilson in so antiquated it should be dumped, not Jericho. It would be easier and more reliable for the cable and satellite industries to monitor the channels viewed at any given hour, with the household’s permission that is.
