| Total Viewers (million) | 29.87 | 8.73 | 7.76 | 5.52 | 2.60 |

Nope. All are hailing American Idol. FOX easily won the night in total viewers and the 18-49 demographic with an impressive 2 hour episode of American Idol that averaged almost 30 million. I thought the bloom was somewhat off the rose for the old girl, ratings had been trending down - but she got some fertilizer or something and averaged over 2 million more viewers this Tuesday than last. Most impressive.
CBS best performing show of the night was a repeat of NCIS. This is not great since CBS premiered new seasons of Big Brother and Jericho which both performed worse than the NCIS encore. Big Brother doesn’t look like it will do quite as well outside of its summer slot where it doesn’t have to contend with American Idol.
The viewer and 18-49 demo numbers looked better for Jericho than the HH Rating. Jericho’s season 2 premiere bowed with 7.15 million and a 2.5/7 in the 18-49 demo. While last in viewers, it trailed Boston Legal (by about 80K) and a rerun of Law & Order: SVU by over a million. I love my Jericho peoples so I am trying to find a silver lining:
1. No show in the 10pm hour dominated (though in fairness L&O: SVU was a rerun)
2. Jericho came in second in the 18-49 demo, but really it appears so close as to almost be a tie for first place.
3. CBS still had a much better night overall than ABC
As a fan of the show and its fans, I still am disappointed. Remember, the show was originally canceled after the season one finale had 7.72 million viewers. To have the season two premiere underperform that is not a good sign.

I too and very disappointed in these numbers for Jericho. When CBS announced the timeslot, I was afraid for it because I know L&O SVU does very well even in repeats. Then I saw that Boston Legal was not a repeat, and was even further afraid. It is good to know that it may be tied for first in the 18-49 demo, so let’s just hope this will help somehow.
February 13th, 2008 at 9:43 am
The more I look at the numbers, the more Big Brother looks like the big stinker for the night. It looks like it lost around 30% of it’s lead in. The American Idol competition is stiff, but NCIS seems like a much better companion to Jericho than the stupid antics I saw on BB last night.
February 13th, 2008 at 9:44 am
I did not like the fact that Jericho was on so late and had to go up against Boston Legal. They need to get their act together and put it in a better time slot. It also needs to be put on a night where Stupid Idol is not on, so that way all of us who don’t watch stupid reality tv shows will have something good to watch. I don’t watch big brother could care less about that show, I do not like American idiot (idol) I want Jericho!!!!!
February 13th, 2008 at 9:49 am
I don’t think that CBS has done a good job at promoting Jericho. And the numbers reflect that. I also don’t think they did a good job at trying to attract new viewers by putting the first season online (like LOST just did).
February 13th, 2008 at 9:56 am
Anon I would have to disagree with you. I think CBS did a good job promoting Jericho, I mean it could of been better but it was good. I think CBS should have promoted that you could catch all the season 1 eps on CBS.com. Also I thought they should of moved it to a better time slot, because 10pm is to late for some people.
February 13th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Jerichos only strong point was the 18-49 demo improved over the end of last season and overall Jericho retained 95% of Big Bothers total audience. Unless the overall trend is up for the remaining 6 episodes Season 3 wont air on CBS - SCI-FI channel is a possibility for Season 3 if the reruns for Season 1 get good ratings there (with the budget/cast cuts, Jericho is cheaper to produce now than during Season 1 when it had the high cost Gerald McRaney on the payroll)
February 13th, 2008 at 10:00 am
You know Nielsen is not everyone and I think it is a biased thing because I know several people in several different states who watch Jericho and none of them are Nielsen households, so how fair is the Nielsen rating system? Long Live Jericho.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:15 am
The numbers for Jericho just couldn’t be correct. My family, friends, and neighbors are all hooked. Although it was late for the kids, I know my next door neighbors let their older kids stay up to watch it too. Everyone I have spoken to loved it. Is everyone else Tivo’ing it? How could the numbers be right when everyone I ask also watched the show? Many of us got hooked from the DVDs, after the show orginally aired. The numbers should have had a huge increase for the return. Even with the bad time slot, this may prove that the ratings are not correctly recorded anymore
February 13th, 2008 at 10:18 am
As per Jericho, won’t the Live + 7 boost that number up?
February 13th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Big Brother is not a good lead in to Jericho. There are two different viewer groups here; even still Jericho retained most of BB’s viewers. Putting Jericho on earlier puts it up against another reality show. So how about this CBS, put BB on at 8 followed by NCIS then Jericho.
I hold BB accountable for loosing the audience.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:24 am
Marc, yes, of course, and while normally I would not say that it would be significant because all 3 shows in the 10pm time slot were relatively close, this may actually be one case where when the LIVE+7 is reported there is a timeslot winner change. Unfortunately we will not see that data for a few weeks (March 3) because of Nielsen production schedules.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:32 am
Nielson ratings are an antiquated system that have destroyed decent shows like Jericho. We saved Jericho last year and we can do it again, write CBS and tell them you did watch.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:42 am
The thing to remember is that ratings are down across the board since the strike and SVU is a top ten show. CBS hasn’t had a show survive more than a few episodes in that timeslot since it cancelled Judging Amy second place may be enough, especially since its a close second.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:42 am
I feel a lot of shows are losing ratings based on DVR penetration and it’s not fair to them. It’s not that people are losing interest, they are watching at their earliest convenience. I think 10pm slot programs are hurting the most since people likely will watch the show the next day or so and they will not be included in the Live+SD ratings.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Hey does anyone have numbers on how many shows have been canceled in the 10 PM timeslot vs earlier hours? I feel like a lot of quality shows are being cut (Journeyman, Studio 60) but it may be hard to prove due to the unending list of comedies that premiere and are canceled within a few episodes.
February 13th, 2008 at 10:54 am
Impressed with Jericho’s return last night but not impressed by the numbers. What gives? I don’t understand it. I know people who watch that show. The numbers don’t make sense. Hope the Jericho numbers rise before it’s over.

I feel that the lead-in of Big Brother was pitiful. I don’t like reality shows in general and especially not BB. I think it is in bad taste. NCIS and then Jericho would have been better. Since Jericho was on so late with such a distasteful lead in, I DVR’d Jericho and watched it this a.m. I can understand the reality shows during the writers’ strike, but won’t CBS learn — I HATE REALITY SHOWS.

I hate to say it, but 10pm is late for me and if I can watch it on the web, I will. I have to get up at 5:30am for work so staying up until 11 is just not an option. I tried last night and am exhausted today. Just not going to happen.

I know there were viewing parties all over for Jericho…so a bunch of people watching on television doesn’t count for much? What do we need to do…leave our TV’s on when we are watching somewhere else? It’s very sad that the network executives only look at numbers and don’t really meet the people who love the show!!

I love Jericho and have access to DVR-. Direct TV is the best. I do not care what time of day or night the show comes on I will be TIVOing it if I am not watching it in real time. I cannot say enough for the suits that decided to keep this in the line up. I am forever grateful. I hope that other viewers get on the ball and start watching this wonderful show. I would hate for the show to get canceled all because the show gets moved from time slot to time slot. Pick a day/time, stick with it and I guarantee that the numbers will be there. The problem that I think a lot of shows have is when the time slots/days start moving around. Audiences lose interest due to having to work to keep up with it. I hope Jericho lasts for a very long time to come. The plot is great and the characters even better.

The ‘Big Networks’ pit three very nice shows against each other on Tues at 10pm, putting viewers in quite a quandry. Add to this the fact that FOX took all of those ‘Idol’ fans and rolled them right into the ‘Big Secret’ of the prime time wars… namely FOX’s 10pm local station affiliate news.
We know a lot of people go ’somewhere’ at 10pm, making all of the ‘Big Three’ numbers look mediocre at best. My guess is either they fall asleep, go on the phone or internet to discuss the ‘Idol’ results and/or leave the remote alone (at say 9:58pm or so) while the local FOX local news drones on in the background.
How do you combat that???
February 13th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I watch all tv shows from downloads, but I made it a point stay up late and watch this show when broadcast. I brought new viewers in from all over the country, and called them last night to make sure they watched the premiere. I just don’t understand these numbers. Every person that I’ve talked to that has seen the show loves it and watched last night.
February 13th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
I enjoy jericho and actually block off time to watch it, though with activities on Tuesday, I have to DVR it now.
When executives (on any network) give a show a second chance, they never seem to return it
1. on the same night it initially started and
2. at the same time slot.
3. and they return it against killer competition
(american idol)
Unless a show is strong (i.e. Lost) you can’t move a show around and expect it to gather fans/or TV viewers. There was another show i liked but it also kept getting moved around i don’t remember anymore what the name was, but it changed days and time slots like 4x before it got axed.
Yes CBS has done quite a bit of advertising, but I would have preferred that they had shown reruns over the past 4-5 wks up to the new season.
Lastly, i enjoyed the 1st ep of 2nd season, but sad that they had to kind of ‘gloss’ over the battle between New Bern and Jericho. Unless that’s the way they wrote it.
P.S. Bravo! to ABC for keeping ‘Pushing Daisies’ on next season’s slate. Risky, but i think the rewards could be great, plus they’re giving a show a chance to ‘Grow’. Networks are too easily disenchanted.

How do they account for online viewers? or dvrs? Come on, Nielsen ratings are dumb. Even Windows 3.1 is more up to date than this BS system!
February 13th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
Neilson doesn’t know what they are talking about. NCIS? I used to watch that show when i only had one channel. Does that mean that it’s the best show on tv..NO. It means I HAD NO CHOICE. American Idol and NCIS, the big hitters, NO REALLY?, like there was really any choice. I can guarantee that the Neilson families weren’t even watching, but asleep on their couch. Between reruns, reality shows and game shows, there is nothing on. WAKE UP REALITY IS OVER,we get enough of it during the day.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Everyone I know watched the show last night. It was excellent. The DVR numbers are really not in yet so that may boost it way up once viewed. 10 pm is a terrible time slot. Jericho has a huge following and it makes no sense at all. CBS should put this show back where it belongs at 9. It’s a show that folks care and have voiced their opinions on to keep on instead of putting something new and stupid on. If they take it off again millions will be in an uproar again! Count me in!
February 13th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Shaddysmom brings up another good point about viewing preferences that Bill or Robert mentioned the other day. A lot of people watch their favorite show and DVR another choice that plays at the same time.
How many out there (like myself), record their favorite (to be enjoyed, played back, FF’d, RW’d SP’d, etc. at their leisure) and ‘kinda watch’ their second choice ‘live’. Do the networks automatically assume you are WATCHING your first and RECORDING your second choice - cuz they’d be wrong on my count.
February 13th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
LOSERS, WINERS, CRYBABIES… Quit complaining about how the numbers are rigged and the system is stupid. Bottom line is that the ratings probably aren’t 100% accurate and every show on tv could have a gripe with that and claim that more viewers actually watch. The fact that a cancelled show drew a decent rating in a crappy timeslot should be consolation enough. One last thing, Jericho was HEAVILY promoted by CBS in magazines, online and seemingly in more commercials than Budweiser so suck it up and enjoy the show.

it didnt help with somebody leaking the first 3 episodes i wonder if some big wig at cbs was behind this to kill the show it woudnt suprise me at all if cbs doent want jericho then let them go to another network look ant shows like supernatural and reaper and other shows like this there lucky to get jericho numbers both of them together and jericho is by far the better show any way thats only my opinion

Yeah, the leak really killed those ratings. If you watched the leaked episodes, you should go watch the online versions (or at least skip to all the commercials, as that’s probably what they track) at cbs.com and boost the ratings that way.

note that nothing in canada is counted that i know of. well nothing where i live is, and my whole neighbourhood watched it. All my friends and my friends friends.
Nielsen ratings simply don’t work, if this show doesn’t appeal to the ppl with the boxes then you lose millions of viewers when you could really just lose 1 and have those millions watching. Jericho is a different show and i think ppl Nielsen look for don’t care for it.

Does CBS keep numbers regarding those who watch the episodes online? The ratings may say one thing, but if an extra 700k or so are watching episodes online, that might account for something. I love this show!

Jake, they can track their video streams. They do not report actual numbers though, which is definitely a sign that the numbers are not very large (not large for Jericho, not large for ALL of CBS shows available online combined). It’s not yet a profitable business.
I doubt even 200,000 are watching Jericho online between the downloads, the .com sites and itunes, but even if a MILLION people were watching online, or even two million, I’m not sure it would matter.
what CBS needs right now, is more people watching it on TV. Thats where the money is made right now.
Nobody is making any real money from online video ads yet. Someday it will certainly happen, but not today.
for now TV is still where it is at if the goal is to make money. And the goal is to make money.

I don’t think that BB should be held responsible here for Jericho’s low numbers. Currently Idol is more popular and that fact can’t be denied. And just like some of you think BB is crap some people think a show like Jericho is crap. I do think that if Idol wasn’t on BB would have performed better. CBS could have pulled a stunt that Fox does show the premier on one night then for the following episodes move it to its intended timeslot.

I don’t think NCIS is a great lead in for either BB or Jericho. BB has nothing in common with NCIS. Also did BB come in 2nd in the time slot following AI? Not surprising AI won the slot is it? What is wild is a repeat of Law and Order beat out a new episode of Boston Legal? IS that right? Has BL jumped the shark already?

CBS keeps saying that they need all eyeballs on their TV screens at a certain time LIVE, but all of us that do this without neilson boxes do not get counted. Tell me how does this work? Neilson needs to find a way to count live viewings on everyones TV including New Media watchers. I have never trusted Neilson. Another article I found on the web posted how Jericho changed the way Neilson works, they found a flaw in their system and are trying to find a way to make these numbers more accurate. I just wish they would do this before more quality programs get tossed aside because of an error in numbers. Long Live Jericho!

The neilson ratings are an absolute joke, its something like one viewer per 80,000 homes or something ridiculous like that. They should take info on what people record on dvr’s, also hits to the website of the show as well as statistical information on how well the show is doing.
Also make sure the shows on a reasonable time slot with a chance to succeed. Just take a look at shows like Firefly or Vanished on fox that were destroyed by stupid executives who had no clue on how to set up a viewable tv lineup.

They should put Jericho back on Wednesday’s at 8:00, and definitely not put it up against Boston Legal. With all the junk “reality” out there, there are few shows I watch, and I don’t like two of them being opposite of each other. Put Jericho back on Wednesday at 8:00, since CBS stupidly took The Power of 10 off, the timeslot is open.

CBS needs to wake up. Finally we have a show in Jericho with a little meat and a lot of teeth. No fluff. No predictable sitcoms with predictable laugh tracks. No whining that you see on all of the “so called” reality shows. Finally a show for adults who enjoy great writing with great actors to pull it off. I too am confused by the ratings. Everyone I know is watching. The postings on this site show me that we are not alone. If we lose Jericho again, those who did not give it a chance will deserve the whining feuds that are rampant on the “reality” shows.
February 19th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
No the reason the show is doing badly is because everyone is making excuses on why they didn’t watch it.
I mean come on. I don’t watch my favorite show on t.v. I watch my second favorite and DVR my favorite.
That is why the will cancel this show. Because you all are idiots. I mean come on how often do they give a show a second chance.
Almost never and you all are just throwing away Jericho’s.
Just turn on your damn t.v. and leave it on if you are going to sleep. Other then that it is all of your faults. We TIVO Jericho and still watch it on one of the other t.v.s. All t.v.s in our house are on Jericho at that time even the ones in rooms we don’t watch.
IT IS ALL YOUR FAULTS AND WE HATE YOU FOR IT.
February 19th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. Unless you are part of the Nielson group that the surveys are gathered from, your watching doesn’t even count. A department store could have 25 television sets all set to CBS “Jericho” and it wouldn’t matter. I was part of the Nielson group two years ago. I had to keep track of everything that I watched for two weeks and mail those reports back to them. I also had to let them know any shows that I DVR’d or recorded. This is how they come up with the Nielson ratings. I learned that unless we are part of the Nielson group, the networks aren’t even aware of what we are watching. Sucks, doesn’t it?
February 19th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Bill, that’s not entirely accurate. While there are still diaries/journals, the “people meters” (you can google and read up on it) make up (I believe) the biggest percentage of the Nielsen tracking.
You are however correct in suggesting that if you’re not a Nielsen family, your eyeballs don’t count in the ratings, but that’s true for any and all shows, not just Jericho.
I’m in no way saying its a perfect system, only that Jericho, like all other shows will get judged within that system anyway.

we need to pull a scam like they did in the 84′ movie starring danny devito, the ratings game. Lets hijack some nielson family homes and tune into shows like Jericho, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, and if it comes back on, Firefly (the greatest, most short lived show I have ever seen on tv)

I love Jericho and cannot believe the numbers! I know a few people who do not stay up that late but tape it so it is a poor reflection of accurate numbers! I have converted my office to watch the show as well as my family.
February 20th, 2008 at 10:08 am
I live in Canda, and watch Jericho it’s on 3 days of the week at various times (AST). I use a DVR off Satelite. The system can’t determine if I am watching live, as the dish does not transmit the info back to the provider.
Tuesdays @ 8pm CTV
Tuesdays @ 11pm CTV
Tuesdays @ 11pm CBS
Saturday @ 9pm Space
Sunday @ 10am Space
Sunday @ 6pm Space
If anything these TV conglomerates should have a petition online to gain a true reflection of numbers.

Jericho just keeps getting better and better. Nielson is NOT an accurate numbers cruncher - it’s antiquated and unless they’re going to put a box in every American household, the networks should not be making decisions soley or in part based on this system!
As for Big Brother - sleeze TV at best. It belongs on very late night Cable TV……or maybe they should have put Jericho on right after NCIS and then BB at 10. I bet a lot of potential new viewers were lost to Jericho after not wanting to wait an hour between 2 great shows.
