Jericho and Big Brother: Ratings Disasters for CBS

Posted on 20 February 2008 by Robert Seidman

I still haven’t seen the viewer numbers, and 18-49, but will post as soon as I do see them.  The household ratings were down for both Big Brother and Jericho from their premieres last week (at least in terms of the overnight results).   In its debut last week BB had a HH Rating of 4.3, last night it sunk to a 3.5.  Bad trend.

Same for Jericho which bowed last week at a 4.1 and sunk to a 3.7 HH rating last night.

Julie Chen and Les MoonvesWhy CBS doesn’t stick both these shows on Friday or Saturday (BB could be on both nights) is a mystery to me of sorts.  I expect CBS to air all its episodes of Jericho it has, but why it doesn’t move Big Brother ASAP is a mystery to me.  Yes, several of you wrote me to inform me that the hot host of BB (Julie Chen) happens to be married to the guy running the network (Les Moonves).  But if I had a wife at all, especially a wife who was much younger and much hotter than me, I’d want to stick her show where more people would actually WATCH IT.

Hopefully the viewer #s will be up sometime before 9:30a PST.

I actually don’t see BB coming back this summer with this terrible run. Oh well - I don’t watch it anyways.

  2. Matthew says:

I just don’t understand how the Jericho eps keep getting better, and the ratings get worse.

    Timeslot? I dunno. but man…

  3. Robert Seidman says:

Matthew, right there with you. But man…

  4. Seymour says:

Me three. I just don’t see it. Jericho gets better every week, and I got more people to watch this week.

  5. Jer-icho says:

Perhaps Jericho’s ratings are as low as they are because the first 3 episodes have already been available (they were somehow leaked) on the internet. This might result in higher ratings when the 4th episode will be aired.

  6. Jim says:

Jerico’s ratings suck because the show sucks. I enjoyed the first three episodes of season one, but when I realized that the pace of the show was so slow that they could get the season one plot into a 2-hour TV movie, it got real old, real fast. Not to mention, the acting in it has been REAL terrible!

  7. Debby says:

So more people tuned back in after Big Brother aired than watched Big Brother. I wish Jericho were aired earlier. I know people who can’t stay up that late to watch it. I also know that most people with DVRs watch TV when it suits them not when the shows are aired. I am hoping that the DVR ratings for Jericho are good. This show is getting better and better. I do hope CBS gives it a full season for 2008-2009.

  8. Steve says:

I don’t think it really matters what time slot Jericho is in, it’s going to perform about the same. Me and my friends started watching it when it first premiered. At first I enjoyed it, but then I easily started to see the trend the show was going in. In a nutshell, (har har), the show is basicaly about a town that full of helpless residents and needs an outsider to come in and save the day each and every episode. I honestly was just sick of the Jake character knowing everything about everything and being the hero day in and day out. It became very predictable. Add in that the filler of the show is just standard soap opera love nonsense. Everyone I have talked to also shared these sentiments and don’t care about the show anymore either. Frankly, I just became bored with it. I watched it again on the season 2 premier, and it didn’t take long to see that it’s just more of the same sillyness. I don’t feel it’s a real look at survival post-nuclear attack, but that it’s just more hollywood fluff catering mostley to a female audience. Too much hunkiness for me.

As for Big Brother, they clearly tried to capitalize on audiences enjoying drama, sex, and hot bodies. It’s quickly backfiring on them. Audiences enjoy drama and controversy, the kind they will complain about but can’t seem to turn it off, but this time around it seems so fake as to almost be scripted. It’s more painful to watch than fun.

So my prediction as that both shows will continue to fall in the ratings as both shows continue to lose viewers. Just like the ratings system, there HAS to be a percentage out there that agrees with my comments. Move these shows to a new time slot where they have absolutely 0 competition and you may get some better numbers out of pure bored viewers, but if a TV show just doesn’t have the substance behind it, it will still fail.

  9. Jim says:

Jericho has been fighting a up hill battle since day 1. First against American Idol, Then a 3 Month Break, Then a cancellation (But we arose to bring it back), Now a Terrible Timeslot. And always the Few decide what the many get to watch. I use to love BB but how many times can you watch the same show with just diffrent actors. Reality TV is a continued Rerun. Everything is the same every time. I have no idea what make Idol so successfull except that it’s the people pulling for their local Favorite. I mean here in BHAM Alabama many watched Past seasons Live Because they wanted to be able to vote and save their Favorites. It makes them feel they are involved. Jericho is a very edgy show. I mean they take on the real issues that we face and address them. Sure it’s nice to watch a local stand on stage and sing trying to get their shot but let’s be realistic. Ruben Studder is where he is not because his talent but because what the people of Alabama done. American Idol was the #1 show while he was on. in the state. But he don’t remember that we put him there. He treated a friend of mine that was in a benifiet show with him like a dog. acting like he was Bruce Springsting or metalica or something. And dont appreciate that we gave him his dream. The Actors on Jericho couldve moved on they are all great and very talented. But they stayed and took time to say thank you for watching How many times has a American Idol took time to write a post on boards saying ty not many. Becauase they have everything they want from you. and you are no longer of any use. So before you sit down and watch another boring hr of 24 ppl trying to be a rockstar think about giving a show a chance that makes you think and appreciates your support.

  10. Karen says:

Jericho fans have a strong online presence, I think we’ll see a boost at episode 4. I personally think the nielsens are antiquated (I mean c’mon, they’re still using paper diaries - look how many are out this month for sweeps).

  11. Robert Seidman says:

Karen, they are not MOSTLY using paper diaries and indeed NONE of the info from the overnight results comes from the paper — that’s all people meters (and I’m not saying they’re NOT antiquated, just that they’re not paper diaries!). The problem for Jericho is that antiquated or not, a rerun of Law & Order: SVU did better.

  12. Steve says:

Agreeing or disagreeing with the Neilson Panel is moot as far as a Jericho fan is concerned. All the shows fall in the same boat. There is no reason to believe if every single person in the United States was tracked that Jericho would all of a sudden be the only show with increased numbers. It more than likely will fall in the exact same placement it is now.
It could even drop farther down. Las Vegas lives and dies by the law of averages, and it looks like there’s no sign of it die’ing anytime soon. Besides, if networks didn’t feel they were making as advertiser dollars as they could due to a faulty rating system, you could be sure there would be an instant change. That’s exactly why they are battling advertisers right now over DVR viewing. Advertisers want their time sensitive adds viewed exactly when they schedule them to be shown. The compromise is to go out a few days, but not pay as much for them.

I actually don't see BB coming back this summer with this terrible run. Oh well - I don't watch it anyways.

  14. Karen says:

As I said on your other topic Robert, SVU is also in it’s 9th season, so they’re pretty established. Jericho has been bounced around so much (hiatus, wed 8pm, fri 9pm, tues 10pm), it hasn’t had a chance to establish it’s own place.

and I didn’t say Nielsen was using ‘mostly’ paper diaries, I know the fast track ratings come from top boxes. My point is that there are a number of (about 175,000?) extra paper diaries out due to sweeps this month.

  15. Matthew says:

  18. Seymour says:

Me three. I just don't see it. Jericho gets better every week, and I got more people to watch this week.

  19. Chris says:

I guess we all just better enjoy the next 5 episodes as they’ll likely be the last. I agree that timeslots have been of no help to Jericho. But CBS has no real interest in seeing the show succeed, they are just looking for an excuse to permanently kill the show (tough timeslots, no promotion, etc.) Bringing back the show for these 7 episodes was just a way to appease the “nuts” (you guys rock!). So when they cancel Jericho for continued poor ratings CBS can say they “tried” (yea, right! why not just put them up directly against AI).

This wouldn’t be the first time a network tried to kill a show. I recall NBC had moved around Quantum Leap back in the day 4 times to try to
    shake loose the viewers.

    Long Live Jericho!

And no, it is not a good lead into Jericho.

Me and my wife really like Jericho. The new season is very good!!!!! Its interesting paced well and the characters are interesting. Spending all the time with the adluts was a good idea. The one thing I wish is that the people suffered a bit more. The character I dont think is good actress is Darce. I think Hawkins needs a stronger mate. CBS needs to move this show so they can see its real potential.

  44. Rob says:

“Big Brother” overall is not in danger, I would suspect. But it is nothing more than an extremely low budget summer show. It has no business showing up in the regular season with its poor production values, and trying to compete with American Idol or any other major production. Yet Big Brother doesn’t have to be this bad. In the old days, the producers made sure to populate the show with diverse people from different walks of life– Christian virgins living with slutty bartenders living with aspiring writers and actors with a creative bent. It wasn’t Hemingway, but I wasn’t embarrassed to watch it. It seems like this time all we got was skanky, self-absorbed morons.

if cbs got such an out cry to put jericho back on the air and they did it, why would they put it in such a horrible time slot. 10pm is when most of us hard workers go to bed good think i have a dvr do the rating system take what shows get recorded into accnt. CBS needs to get there junk in one sock with a great show with a big enouph fan base to get in put back on the air mabey they should move it to friday or sat or mabey put it on at 8pm. by the way CBS Big brother sucks just putting that out. Focus on your good shows and give them a chance, if you were a toy company you would in china painting the good plastic with lead paint.

We have been glued to the TV ever since the show came out and can’t get enough! With the exception of Survivor (a show that I vowed never to watch again after Ya-man lost) I havent watched ANYTHING on CBS for a good 10 years. The only reason I found out about Jericho in the first place is because my husband is a CSI fan and he saw a commercial.

I was sad to hear that they only did 7 episodes and are calling that a season? Last “season” was 22 or 23 episodes if I remember correctly. If CBS doesnt want this show, I hope a cable channel will pick it up and keep it in tact.

If someone told me I had only 1 hour a week to watch TV, by far, Jericho is the show I would choose.

  50. frank says:

Big Brother is not in trouble! Yes the ratings are not great but CBS needs filler right now and they are not expecting miricals. It will be back this summer for the “Real” season. Ratings will go back to normal.

  51. Robert Seidman says:

Frank, CBS has great filler without BB, great filler that about twice as many people watch. Whether they stuck reruns of their crime dramas there or Two and a Half Men, there’s be plenty enough filler that twice as many people would watch than BB for a good long while.

Yes the first 3 episodes being leaked had a huge effect on the show but its time slot is worse.

I know that os the weakest time slot of all 3 but thats good because jericho has no compitition there.

I’m a recovering BB junkie, subscribed to the feeds, the whole nine yards…. last season, when the audience was cheering on of the most disgusting humans ever, I realized that I didn’t mind being part of a group of voyeurs, but I drew the line at being a part of a group of sadistic voyeurs.

I agree with Rob; the show has devolved from one that is about a bunch of interesting diverse people forced to live together, and the inevitable conflicts that result, to a bunch of clones who are only “interesting” because they like to create trouble.

With a 10pm time slot, the first 3 episodes on the net (I watched them already), I think CBS wanted the show to fail. There is no way we are going to watch at 10pm, my son has to go to school at 7am. We have to TIVO the show and watch it the next day. Nielsen ratings do not take into account so many of the modern methods for watching. I am certain that Jericho is getting an especially raw deal in the ratings.

CBS, get you act together. Move the show to an earlier time slot, or move it to the weekend. Gauge the ratings only then and beginning with episode 4, if you haven’t leaked that out yet.

Jericho is the best show on television, period.

I gotta admit I never trusted the ‘numbers’ that statistical analysis comes up with. Then, I had to argue with my stats professor constantly - the theory was good, but his practical applications would stink. Jericho isn’t a documentary - it’s a work (great work) of fiction. In that aspect, it keeps me coming back for more and more - heck, I even watch some of the commercials, just to see who’s sponsoring it. I was half expecting to see Mr Peanut.
