Nielsen Ratings for Thur Feb 21: Can FOX Be Stopped?

Posted on 22 February 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard for Thurs. Feb. 21, 2008 FOX CBS ABC NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 17.85 12.19 8.87 6.09 2.90
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 6.6/16 3.3/8 3.4/8 2.5/8 1.2/3

small-simon.jpgA one hour Thursday edition of American Idol led FOX to the top of the leaderboard again in both total viewers and the 18-49 demo.  Indeed, it had almost twice as many viewers as Survivor: Micronesia.  It’s not that Survivor isn’t performing pretty well — I mean come on, it’s like its 117th season, but AI is just a ratings beast.  AI is like the New England Patriots were for 18 weeks.  Except for this: Idol *will* actually go undefeated!

In the 9pm hour, Lost won with the most viewers and most 18-49 viewers but interestingly was third in HH Rating behind the solid Don’t Forget the Lyrics and an encore CSI.  It appears that last week’s lost LOST viewers were not in fact Valentine’s Day related.  It could be the show is just getting too crazy and confusing for some, although I confess I am enjoying it so much I DVR’d my fave, Supernatural which had one of its better nights with 3.2 million viewers.  And… my DVR spazzed :-(    iTunes for me.

Lost had 13.53m compared to 13.62m last week (2/14) and 15.06m the week before (2/7).  It will be interesting to see if the DVR LIVE+7 numbers are going up.

At 10pm CBS crushed the field.  New episodes of Eli Stone and Lipstick Jungle were no match for a repeat of Without a Trace.    See for yourself:

Wow, the Nighshifter episode (the repeat) did really well! It's too bad we are the only CW show not getting repeats during hiatus. It proves that with a little promotion and aired at another time (and possibly another night), our show's repeat ratings would be considerably higher.

  2. Beth says:

    Robert-
Great to hear Supernatural is a favorite of yours, but are you DVRing it to watch something else? I watch it live and get it from iTunes.

To The Cw, please renew Supernatural!

  3. Rachael says:

Ohh!! Your DVR fails hard! I'm so sorry! But I have to tell you that I've heard that the Amazon downloads are a significantly better quality than the iTunes ones…

I'm so happy about the better ratings for Supernatural this week! Yay!!

Lost, on the other hand, has totally lost me… I can't be bothered with it anymore.

  4. Beth — actually last night I had both Supernatural and Lost both programmed to record. I watch very little TV live besides sports.

Rachel, I have nothing against the unbox downloads on Amazon other than I can't slap the episodes on my iPhone that way and weird as it may seem (I'll cop to being more quirky than average) I love watching video on the small screen! Lost is getting a little crazy, but I'm actually enjoying it.

  5. Jon V says:

Don't get me wrong – 'Without a Trace' is a nice little show. Because it's now syndicated I usually catch it on (I think) TNT.

But it's success – last night, especially – is more an indictment of the two NEW shows it was up against, namely ELI and LIPSTICK.

That's got be embarrasing for ABC/NBC. I'm tempted to watch one and DVR the other just to decrease the shame.

  6. Nessa says:

I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad the Supernatural's numbers have gone up from the last few weeks. It's such a good show and completely underrated, and I'm completely boycotting the CW for the two months that SN is off the air until it comes back with its 4 new episodes in April…GO SN!!!!!

I think they should put “Supernatural” on CBS, then more people would know how good it is.
I think that if “Supernatural” was on a major network, it would be one of the biggest programs out there. “Supernatural” would receive much more recogition that it does now. More people would know it actually exists. It has to be one of the best shows that has ever been on television and it is being hidden away. But, not hidden away from some of us who were fortunate to find it. It can be happy, sad, scary, funny, interesting, surprising, and it has one of the most real and wonderful sibling relationships (between the two brothers on the show) that I have ever seen.

It's not surprising that the viewership is dropping for Lost. I mean you wouldn't want someting intelligent and thought provoking. That would be too much for the American veiwing public, or at least the red states. It remindes me of Arressted Development too smart for its own good.
Another great episode last, more revealed more questions. I love it, thinking, pondering, the best show ever!

Echoing trish here CBS should totally air Supernatural. They even could try airing it during the summer. It should get more ratings on CBS than the CW. Plus it could give the CW a nice boost since they are losing their powerhouse show “WWE Friday Night Smackdown” next fall. They should totally take NBC up on their offer for Friday Night Lights.

Brad, Lost is the only show I watch, and guess what I'm a republican, typical hypocrite democrat that believes they are above the rest in intelligence. They believe a mother should be able to kill their baby, as long as it hasn't seen daylight. Sounds pretty rational to me.

  22. Nighthawk says:

Nice idea, but I don't think Supernatural would do well on CBS, or any major network, they'd cancel it because you know on THOSE networks a show has to garner at least an 8.0 for it to even be considered a semi good show.
Better to leave it on the CW, where a 3.2 rating is comparable to maybe a (guessing here)7 on a “major” network, since a lot of the country does not even have the CW in their area. And yes, the CW needs to pick up Friday Night Lights :)

  23. I'm mostly with Nighthawk, though it might be worth experimenting with in the summer time. In general, a show based on the supernatural or science fiction can't find a mainstream audience.

The broadcast nets are obligated to try to find as big of an audience for the shows aired. It's not reasonable to think that Supernatural would perform any better on CBS than Moonlight (another show with “supernatural” implications) or The Sarah Connor Chronicles on FOX. Let me be clear —

I LOVE both Supernatural and Terminator: TSCC, but do not believe these are shows which could attract 10 million regularly on a broadcast network.

Sticking Supernatural on CBS would most certainly increase its ratings substantially, probably by more than 100%! But that doesn't mean it's a good choice for CBS.

But DVRs are changing the way the world works. I like the notion of sometimes sticking Supernatural on CBS whether it be on bad nights like Fridays and Saturdays or on the summer schedule with the hope that these people will wind up wanting to catch new episodes on the CW.

The bigger problem for Supernatural may be finding new interesting story arcs. The mystery/suspense/resolution that unfolded the first two seasons between the boys and their father was awesome. Now we have the “save Dean from his pact with the devil” arc. But they will have to resolve that sooner rather than later (one year is one year!).

Lipstick Jungle is fading faster even than Cashmere Mafia and Bros. and Sis. I thought ABC was supposedly the best-positioned, after Fox, to benefit from the strike? They've done the worst. Why? 18-45's are fleeing to reality, UTube and MySpace etc because they hate the scripted shows. Reruns of crime show hits are killing this yuppie empowerment crap. One blessing so far from the New Year.

Yay for Supernatural. That's my favorite show on TV right now. I do love Lost as well – I watched Supernatural (couldn't wait) and taped Lost – in case I had to rewind if I needed to.

It bugs me – and pun intended which I'll get to in a moment – that a CSI rerun beat Lost in household veiwers. For me CSI is so overrated I can't even start without getting my blood pressure up (for that kind of show I much preferred Crossing Jordan when it was on – which at least got the insects correct and had characters that I loved). I watched two episodes of CSI before giving up. Both had science that I knew about that was so awful, it wasn't even funny – on the first episdoe I saw, they showed a giant cockroach (Blaberus cranifer if I remember) and later it was identified as a “powderpost beetle” – which isn't remotely close. That would be like comparing a mouse and an elephant and saying they were the same thing. I can't imagine how bad the science I don't know about might be.

I hope Lost doesn't get let go because of it. I like that it's complicated with lots of cool twists and turns and interesting characters. I'd hate to lose another favorite show (like Crossing Jordan) to the steamroller that is CSI.

I'm not against franchise shows – I love me some L&O (great writing), L&O: SVU (for the characters mostly), and even occasionally L&O: CI, still the best frachise to me. I just have never seemed to click with the sensationalism of CSI (with all the weird fetish cases I've heard about cause my Mom likes CSI) and many of the CBS shows. I like my sensationalism a little different – I watch Rescue Me for that kind of stuff. And Monk and Psych for crime-solving entertainment.

Sorry for the rant – it was set off by seeing that MENSA (really?) named CSI a top 10 show of all time. That just… with the bad science, I can only ask. How could they?
