I think advertisers should pay based on Live + 7 numbers. You still see the ads while FF and likely concentrate on the screen more when Fast Forwarding the commercials. Plus, who actually FF's to the exact spot when the program is back on from commercial break? You will sometimes catch the last commercial and will just let it run. I know I do. I just feel DVR is impacting ratings so much it may be time for a change on how advertisers buy their ad space. There should be more sponsoring, banners, and perhaps even product placement. Is it fair for a show that still maintains viewers but because of advance technology gets ignored?
Sorry for my rant.
I am just very fascinated with Live+7 and the amount it adds to the total viewers. One of my favorite shows is a DVR'd heavy show since it's on @ 10/9C on a Friday night.

Marc, which of the networks do you work for? They LOVE your thinking. Nielsen loves it too actually — they just bought a biometric research company that I'm sure will have only one goal: prove that people watch commercials as they fast forward.
Sadly for them, I know for a fact Bill Gorman is on a personal crusade to teach the world about the 30 Second skip button.
You can quote me on this: “You can't remember what you never saw to begin with!”

LOL, well I do some volunteer work for SCI FI but thats about it. :p Isn't it true that Cable networks are seeing a better C3 index? I heard SCI FI is on the top of that list.
What is the “30 Second skip button”? I also think it's interesting that some folks will wait like 20 mins to watch a show just so they can skip through the commercials.
We are truly in a different age.
30 Second Skip = a method for programming your DVR remote control to be able to jump ahead 30 seconds at a time. Much faster than fast-fowarding, and also does not require the “focused concentration” on the screen fast-forwarding does.
Essentially 30 second skip button = your commercials are completely worthless via DVR playback.
Fortunately (for the networks) most DVRs do not yet come with the 30 second skip button programmed in as the default. It's easy to reprogram the remotes, but we live in a world where overwhelmingly most people never change the default settings on anything.

Thanks for the info. My DVR doesn't have that.
I think some people may forget they are even watching it via DVR and may just let the commercials roll.
Marc — whatever your DVR, it can likely be done — it's just not the default. Post what make of DVR (for example, if it's from Comcast, is it a Motorola?) and either Bill or I will post a link to the instructions for programming your remote.
I think some people may forget they are watching DVR. Speaking for myself, when I forget to skip through the commercials it's usually because I wasn't paying much attention to the actual program either.
Re: Marc's Live +7
We mentioned the dynamics of FFing through comms, catching glimpses and the subliminal etc (which TV has been accused of for over 40 years) a couple of weeks ago, and I agree that there's something there.
I'm sure there are graduate students doing research as we speak, and that they will find a % number that makes sense in terms of time-shifted commercials. Two weeks and a coupla thou viewers oughta give them a number with in a .point of the real deal.
Jon, the 30 second skip renders all that moot!
they've been doing the research for months and months already. I think there were some stats in this post from October.
I have DirectTV actually. One of those Samsung DVR receivers. I am not a nielsen family so watching the commercials in my house does not support the show. If my house counted I would actually make an effort to watch the show live or at least not FF commercials during DVR playback.
I just think it's unfair for a show to get non-renewed when their audience is still there but just watching at different times due to better technology.
What will be the fate of a show like “Jericho” which had a very nice bump after “Live + 7″.

some of the samsung DVRs are tivos on directv, so I'm not sure which model you have or whether it's possible. if you can provide the model # of your set top box, i'll see what i can find out.
I think the fate of Jericho is this: it lives, but probably not on CBS. Then again, CBS didn't cancel Welcome to the Captain yet so they could announce any day that Jericho has been renewed!
