Nielsen Ratings for Mon March 10: Julianna is no Summer Glau!

Posted on 11 March 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard for Mon. March 10, 2008 CBS NBC FOX ABC CW
Total Viewers (million) 9.28 9.24 8.20 5.70 1.44
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.9/8 2.7/7 2.1/6 2.1/6 0.6/2

What a difference a week makes for ABC.  The Bachelor: Where are They Now? was no 20/20: The Royal Family, and ABC plummeted from first place last Monday to fourth place this Monday.  The only good news for the Mouse network is that it tied for 3rd with FOX in the 18-49 demo even though it averaged two million fewer total viewers.  ABC aired the final two episodes of October Road between 9p-11p, and given the performance (under 5 million and under a 2.0 in the demo) those will almost certainly be the final two episodes.

Julianna Margulies may be attractive to some (me included!) but it would appear from a FOX perspective (pun intended) she’s no Summer Glau!  The premiere of Canterbury’s Law could rustle up only 7.62 million and worse, it was next to last (beating only a repeat of Gossip Girl!) in the 18-49 demo.  It’s somewhat puzzling to me why FOX didn’t premiere this show after an airing of American Idol before moving it to its regular timeslot.

FOX did exactly that (twice last week!) with New Amsterdam.  Last night was Amsterdam’s first airing in its normal timeslot without the American Idol lead-in and it pulled in 8.78 million viewers with a 2.5 in the 18-49 demo.  Not great, but not bad.  Both shows paled in comparison to a rerun of House one year ago that drew 9.69 million and a 3.5  in the 18-49 demo.

CBS won the night both in total viewers and the 18-49 demographic. Indeed, a rerun of Two and a Half Men was the most watched show of the entire evening and also had the best 18-49 performance.  I’m not sure if the trend of rerun success is CBS’ friend, but consider that the repeat of 2.5 Men beat out both new airings of The New Adventures of Old Christine.  If I was running CBS, 2.5 men would air at least five times a week! ;)   I know what you’re thinking: “Seidman, don’t quit your day job.”  Unfortunately, I did just that — over five years ago.

I don’t know if Gorman and I could do a better job with the EYE network, but I’m pretty sure we’d do a better job with the CW (I’d start buy airing at least ONE repeat of Two and a Half Men a week on the CW — no doubt.).

Oh that'd be really cool, a post with all the hot topic shows. I think a lot of people would be interested in seeing that.
  • frankj, While we are lacking information, not just age demo ratings, but easily garnered timeslot competition data, if I have time I will regenerate the Renew or Cancel with a few of the "hot topic" shows like Jericho and TSCC.
  • FrankJ, I don't know if "Renew or Cancel" is on hiatus because of our lack of age demographic information outside of the 18-49 (and we can only see that the weeks where it was in the top 25 -- which was fortunately most of them).

    Bill?
  • frankj
Robert, I was curious, did you guys have any plans for a "Renew or Cancel" post about Sarah Connor? Season round-up for the ratings? Finale DVR numbers? Heck, maybe a graph showing the uptick in the 18-49yr demo numbers in relation to Summer Glau's airtime? ;-)

No, but actually, I've been seeing a lot more favorable articles (here and here), so I'm optimistic, but it would be cool to see a ratings re-cap on the season and what kind of numbers the show needs to pull down at the start of next season to have a good life on FOX.

I can understand his obsession and TSCC never went that ridiculously low in the demo. If anything you should compare it to New Amsterdam. That got 2(!) AI lead-ins which is unfair to CL. That should've at least had one. I hate these kind of shows by the way.
  • p.s. Meanwhile no comments on the soap-opera type situation with the CBS sitcoms as six different sitcoms are vying for what appears to be only for slots from 8-10pm.

Things get real next week and I'm gearing up my TVBS picks for the new schedule. Bargains on almost all CBS MON/SITS.
  • Didn't Sarah have the good fortune of a FOX blitz and an easy schedule before she settled into her more Canterbury-like numbers.

I can understand Robert's obsession (I don't really know why I say that), but Bill, Julianna M should be right in your (and my) wheel house.

Summer is ridiculously awesome if you as me. I loved her in Firefly and I love her in Terminator. Of course she has no facial expressions, she's a terminator. She doesn't have emotion.
  • sdfou
Cancel Canterbury Law and bring back Terminator!
  • Chris
Yeah, you're the only one. Stands there staring, no facial expression...she's supposed to be a robot! If anything I'd say she's underrated.
  • Jack
Angie, yes i think you are the only one.
  • frankj
FOX could probably put Summer on TV reading a magazine for an hour and still win the 18-49yr demographic.
  • Angie
Am I the only one who thinks Summer Glau is ridiculously overrated? She just stands there and stares with her big bug eyes - no facial expressions ever, in anything she's ever been in!
  • Jack
I think FOX should cancel Canterbury's Law and put Julianna next to Summer in Terminator. Win-win situation.
  • I could go with Bart Simpson is no Stewie Griffith which certainly seems true ratings wise, but not nearly as much...fun. ;)
  • TVbytheNumbers.com hopes to move to the top in the Summer Glau meme Google indexing ;)
  • Daniel
New Amsterdam didn't do as good as Terminator in the demo and in the weeks to come will it improve? And I agree, Summer Glau is hot hot hot! Canterbury's Law is already a goner I think.
  • Tim
Wow only a 1.7 in the 18-49 group for Canterbury's
Law. If there is no improvement on this soon, I hate to say, Julianne we'll be seeing you somewhere else later.
  • bill
    There's only one Summer!
