Catching Up on Jericho (and Lost)

Posted on 14 March 2008 by Robert Seidman

Skeet Ulrich as Jake on CBS’ JerichoI watched the most recent four episodes of Jericho yesterday and am all caught up. I definitely agree that the show has improved in its pacing and become more interesting. At this point what the show reminds me of more than anything is 24. I like 24. I don’t love it, but I like it a lot and have watched all six seasons, will likely watch the 2 hour movie and season 7 as well.

Spoilers ahead, so bail out now if that’s not your thing.

I liked the way the whole Goetz, Bonnie, Stanley, New Bern thing was handled. Vigilante justice may never be a good idea in real life, but on TV and the movies? We love that stuff. And so, Stanley totally blowing Goetz’ brains out and then New Bern stringing the dead Goetz up over the entrance to their town? You do get the feeling justice actually got served. It’s not pleasant, but it is very tidy.

While the rumor mill on Jericho being cancelled is growing (as of 7am PDT on 3/14 I have not heard anything official), I can say that the On Demand is advertising the next 3 episodes of Jericho by saying “Catch the final three episodes of Jericho!” How final is…final?

In an interview with TV Guide, Brad Beyer who play’s Stanley claims he’s cautiously optimistic for the show’s renewal, but also says:

“I don’t think our show’s success can really be measured by just the Nielsen ratings. People are watching it on TiVo, online and they’re downloading it, too. You really need to add another million [viewers] to our numbers.”

I’m with him on this, and heck, I’ll even add an additional two million between DVR and the Internet. But that’s the problem, even if I add two million, I don’t see CBS keeping this show. But hopefully they are having discussions about living on via SciFi or some other network. As has been written elsewhere, two endings were filmed, one a cliffhanger and one a series finale, so one way or the other we’ll know Jericho’s fate when the season finale airs.

Jericho fans who never hopped on the Lost bandwagon, I recommend buying the DVDs and hopping on board. Though I figured Michael would be the face I thought I’d never see again (I knew it wasn’t going to be Ana Lucia, even though I would have loved that much more), you never know for sure with these guys.

Sun was revealed as one of the Oceanic 6 which I believe gives us five out of six (Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sayid and Sun). Of course the Oceanic 6 excludes all the “others” — we know Ben lives on and unless I missed my mark, Michael and Walt are safe too, but not part of the 6. Of course with time travel and alternate universes possible, the writer’s can really do whatever they want, but I do not believe it likely they will un-kill Jin and Charlie. Of course Jin is technically not dead yet, and we can at least hope for another Charlie sighting via a Hurley hallucination.

Note to the readers who recommended I watch NBC’s Life. I caught the premiere and enjoyed it and plan to catch up on the rest after NCAA basketball is done eating my brain. I’m glad they’re making more episodes of Life.

The first season of Life was very good and I think NBC did well by renewing it for another season. Hope to see it’s ratings improve over the course of the second season.

LOST is phenomenal this year, and the only thing better than LOST this year was the final season of The Wire. The Wire was just three steps ahead of every TV-show out there.

Jericho I really tried to watch, I loved the premise of the show and everything, but it just didn’t deliver, I’m sorry Jericho fans I just don’t see this show going anywhere. I hope the fans at least get a somewhat satisfying finale. Don’t jerk them around with cliffhangers CBS if you won’t renew it for a third year. And that is definitely not looking likely.

In my opinion “Lost” was a loss to start with this show was a bad idea. And a badly acted show.

LOST has ticked me off more than any show ever. I thought it was great the first year, second year I started to worry and now it is quickly turning into a Twin Peaks mire. Like we haven’t seen Kate hold the baby and suddenly she is squeamish about it? John Locke turns into the big Benry wannabee and can’t even quite do that, but WHY? What motivated the mystic John Locke to turn insane, with Benry qualities and not the guts to do it all the way. Why does ANY person connected with Benry in ANY way continue to take one word he says (or his man says) with any kind of consideration? Sorry. It’s very “pretty” still, but LOST is definitely the correct title for the show. Very disappointed. And certainly not a replacement in any way shape or form for Jericho.

  7. Jim, 15 million or so disagree with you about LOST (adding in DVR viewing, natch).

I know how that is, I don’t have the American Idol bug, but 25 million to 30 million people regularly don’t care what I think ;)

  9. KIC, to quote Tony Kornheiser on Lost: “Get these slob losers off this island already! How many seasons can they be stuck there without their hair growing?”

Yes, Life is an amazing show, I love it! I coudln’t have been happier than when I learned NBC had picked it up & then renewed it for another season.

I agree that this season of Jericho is much better than the first, but it’s nothing like this season of Lost. Apart from last episode which I was disappointed in, this season has been nothing but mind-blowing !

And about Lost, I think Aaron is one of the Oceanic 6, since he kinda was on the plane, too. He’s the miracle baby of the group I would think.

But I wouldn’t say Michael and Walt are safe. Being on the boat doesn’t mean anything, they could still die, or stay on the Island or whatever happens to everyone but the O6…

    LOST>>>>>Jericho

I’m sorry, but Jericho sucked in the first season and it still sucks in the second season. That’s a fact. That is why people don’t watch it. It’s a frakkin miracle CBS renewed it in the first place. I guess they didn’t know what to do with all them nuts, so they renewed it for 7 more episodes.

  15. Fred, I’m guessing Aaron doesn’t count because he wouldn’t have been on the 815 manifest (same for ‘the others’ & Desmond).

  17. A few people where I work are absolutely hooked on LOST. Hopelessly so. I wondered today as they breathlessly discussed the latest episode how they’d be feeling now if the tables were turned and it was Jericho that was the juggernaut and LOST that was being cancelled.

Their reaction would be one akin to grief. Why did I have to fall for Jericho instead of LOST? From the first season I haven’t been able to sit through one episode of LOST. What a snooze-fest. I don’t get it, I wish I liked that show. Then at least I wouldn’t have to kiss the only show I like goodbye.

I’m happy for you LOST lovers. For us Jericho people, though, today’s news that we’ve cancelled is like a death in the family almost. Silly but true.

Lost was…interesting last night. I’m not easily confused by shows, not even Lost, but I was a little Lost last night. Not too bad, but enough to just kind of be ‘meh’ about the episode. Season 1 of Lost I adored. I keep watching, its good, but I’m not overwhelmed by this ‘OMG THIS IS AMAZING’ feeling.

Its really too bad for Jericho. These last four episode have just been so impressive to me. Bonnie’s death and Stanley’s revenge just had me so broken hearted.

To the person who said Jericho sucked in the first season and in the second season too and that’s a fact (which if it sucked, why did you keep watching and if you didn’t watch, how do you know it sucks?) I think I will correct you and say its isn’t Fact, its OPINION. There is a difference.

I’m sad for the show, but at least the fans get some kind of closure.

LOST is a novel, and those who have stuck around to this point are rewarded by careful viewing. The show is layered with so many beautiful complexities, and is the smartest show I’ve ever seen on television.

And, I’m also a fan of Jericho. I don’t think it’s the best show ever on television, but I’ve appreciated seeing a show depict an alternate history, so to speak. The show had an awful lot of potential, but got bogged down in the first season with way too many soap opera elements that distracted from the show’s premise. However, the characters are all more or less likeable (even creepy Dale) and it will be sad to say goodbye to them.

Why does enjoyment of one show have to preclude the enjoyment of another?

I agree that you can enjoy more than one show at a time. I do as well, BUT, Jericho is the only one that has made me think and question things outside of my everyday life. I enjoy the intrigue and the mystery and trying to figure out what’s going to happen next. It takes me out of my real life for an hour each week when it’s on live tv and whenever I want it to when I watch the DVD’s and the iTunes episodes. Thank you CBS for this wonderful show.

Who said JERICHO has been cancelled???
I haven’t seen any official word from CBS, so how would anyone know if it were cancelled?
I LOVE JERICHO and I PRAY and BEG that it gets renewed.
I like LOST as well, but I never know what is going on. That gets frustrating sometimes.
JERICHO keeps you guessing, but also gives you answers. Plus, HAWKINS is such a BAD ASS!!
And Jake is such a HOT ASS!! The two work amazingly together. I like all the characters, especially Emily. I LOVED Gerald McRaney, and am very sorry that he was killed off. I miss him.
    Well, that’s my 2 cents.
    Grace :)

    “(even creepy Dale)”

I laughed out loud at that…that describes that character completely. From now on I’m calling him Creepy Dale.
