The dude from CBS completely misrepresented the web streaming numbers for Jericho. One episode of Jericho viewed on the web consists of seven streams. Ergo, you would have to divide the number of streams by seven to approximate an average minute rating of the show, which is how TV ratings are reported. So it looks like web streaming added maybe one or two tenths of an equivalent rating point to the TV rating.

I think that CBS didn't have much faith in Jericho to start with, and that was evident in putting it up against NCIS and L&O: SVU because even re-runs of those shows typically do fairly well. And knowing that they already screwed up before by going on a long hiatus, and then throwing this out as a "oh by the way, here is the last seven episodes of Jericho. Please don't send us peanuts" type of guesture, I think that it was doomed to fail from the start.

I could be wrong, but there's virtually NO advertising for this show beyond the obligatory "next week on Jericho" promos and the occasional tv spot. Not a lotta mentions of the online viewing or downloading.

I'd love to see this get a full season 3 to wrap up everything and settle into a nice ending (as nice as possible in THAT show), but it probably won't happen.

But Lipstick Jungle gets extended and shows like Jericho and Journeyman are given the shaft.

Nice.

I'll go out a limb here with a comment/question. Serial dramas in themselves create a problem for finding loyal viewers. Its a continuing storyline that one must follow closely by keeping up with each and every episode. I know I have begun watching what I considered to be "a good show", missed a subsequent episode and said "well there goes that". The only show I jumped through hoops for to catch up on its' storyline through reruns was The West Wing.

I still think if Jericho's original 12 million viewers were made aware of the shows viewing availability on line from the beginning it would have held higher combined numbers throughout both seasons.

I also don't think its the networks that need the convincing, I think it's the ad buyers. So how do you change the ad buyers view? And, do they want it changed?

I can only assume Mr. Keane used Jericho as an example because I imagine the fight for counting other means of viewership as it relates to Jericho is a fairly well known one.

Great article. Positive or not, it was very informative.

to "My Response" if when you add in the Nielsen viewing plus the online viewing the numbers are still not so good, I believe all CBS was trying to do was draw attention to its online site.

These days "most" of the "TV" I watch is on my iPhone to be honest, so I am completely with you as far as measuring viewing wherever it happens (but so is Nielsen, by the way).

Sadly, "quality" doesn't always perform very well numbers-wise, and changing the way viewers are measured isn't going to change that at all.

It is possible that CBS is starting to realize that those ratings you mention, are simply no longer accurately measured. It may take a show loved as much as Jericho to point that out. Everyone I know watches it, online, taped, or live. How can you measure how many people stick a tape in an old-fashioned VCR in order to avoid the late time slot? Others watch in online. These things are only known now when we speak out. Not to upset anyone but it is not just "TV BY THE NUMBERS" anymore. They have to find another way to measure viewers to keep quality programs on the air.

I hate it when people make sense, and what makes sense is that my favorite show, Jericho, just doesn't have the ratings to get season 3.
Bummer.
