America loves the contests and tonight we had two of them, American Idol and Dancing With the Stars. For one hour, between 9pm-10pm they went head to head. We’re fortunate Berman is slacking today and that as a result we got half hourly data. You can see how they squared off against each other. And the winner is? American Idol. Did you have any doubt?
FOX, even up against DWTS easily won the night with a 2 hour installment of American Idol. While Dancing With the Stars most certainly outperformed everything besides Idol, the beatdown Idol puts on DWTS is quite impressive. Even at 10pm (until 10:32p) when it wasn’t facing AI, DWTS could not pull in 20 million viewers (19.99 million though – not shabby at all!). The real beatdown though is in the 18-49 demographic where AI tripled DWTS’ number from 9p-9:30p and almost tripled it from 9:30p-10p. It’s no contest really. But for what it’s worth, I did check out Dancing With the Stars for a bit (I fast forwarded like mad on the DVR, but still) and didn’t watch a second of AI.
I also watched Jericho, and while the numbers improved slightly from what I saw at 8am, they didn’t improve enough to be excited about. I’m starting to get the vibe that next week’s episode will be the series finale and not the season finale, but we’ll find out soon enough. Jericho has definitely morphed into something more like 24, and I am enjoying it. But the ratings are not good, and not even the online viewing or live+7 DVR usage is going to save it on CBS. I’m still pulling for CW or SciFi!
I also don’t understand CBS’ inability to own up to Big Brother being a bad fit for Tuesday nights, but “deny, deny, deny” quite often works out, so I can’t blame them for trying. Again, CBS best performer of Tuesday night was a rerun of NCIS.
With the return of DWTS, the peacock’s at NBC will no longer be able to brag about finishing 2nd in the 18-49 demographic against Idol. But all that glitters, does not mean lead-ins matter. In the: “Who ya Got?: Lead-in or Remote Control”, I’ve got the remote, baby!
Although DWTS had almost 20 million viewers at 10pm, half of them departed when Miss Guided premiered on ABC. That will get worse when the 10:30-10:32pm portion of DWTS is factored out of that half hour and it will get worse still when Miss Guided lands in a timeslot with no lead in (this Thursday, two episodes from 8p-9p).
Lots of half hourly data for the night, have at:

Wow, DWTS has twenty million people watching it. That…amazes me I guess. At least Jericho was able to hold on a little bit when up against something as big as that. Oh well, I have a feeling it will be the series finale as well.

I wonder what the ratings of Jericho would be like if they had kept it on wed. at 8 or even 10, there isn’t much competition in those time slots. Considering it has one of the worst lead in shows on television (I hate big brother) and gets higher ratings than its lead in tells me a lot about the popularity of the show.

Well the fact BB lost viewers half from NCIS and continued to lose through the hr shows it is time to close the house on BB. Jericho regained almost a point from what BB lost gaining Hh and 18-49 to me BB needs to go away Jericho following NCIS is money bet on it #s would easily been 5.3/6 18-49 and 8 HH

I guess we won’t be seeing any more Jericho next season.

Yeah it doesn’t look good for Jericho while the episodes have gotten better and better each week.
I only wish they had started the season 2 premiere more like the rest of the episodes. Anyone deciding to watch it for the first time didn’t get to see what the show is really like (from last season or the rest of this season).
I also wish they would have used a different time slot/day.

If Jericho could have followed a winning show all along, it might have stood a chance. It has gotten to be a quantum leap above the insipid and ridiculous “24″ and is groundbreaking when you consider that no other series in the history of TV has ever done this scenario before.
In fact, there has not even been a movie that seriously explored what a post-nuclear America would be like — especially when the “enemy” is big business!
I really do hope that CW or Sci-Fi picks it up because there is so much depth to the characters and the story lines that has yet to be plumbed.
I hope the finale is in double-digits. I’ve been telling everyone I know to watch it, and asked them to tell everyone they know to watch it.
At the very least, if next week is the series finale, it will be the most intense series finale in recent memory.

We’ve rehashed a lot these scenarios before – Idol, Dancing, Jericho (terrible slot for that here).
What about the over-looked debut of Miss Guided. How real are those numbers following ‘Dancing with the Smucks’ (love Judy Greer AND Brooke Burns, Chris Parnell)? For those who don’t have the time, this isn’t just for high-schoolers (I could quote you a couple of mature/adult lines – but won’t).
There’s always room for another good sitcom with likeable actors and good writing.

Robert you do such a great job about not beating around the bush with the dumbass in charge of CBS, and really speaking out against nepotism, because it has failed time and time again, but Americans keep failing to hold parents accountable! Thanks, as always:-)

Jon, we have not rehashed Idol versus Dancing it’s the first time that’s happened since we launched the site! I didn’t overlook Miss Guided either…I’m not optimistic.

I love Jericho. If CBS is smart it will keep it on. I hate all the reality tv shows. What’s wrong with America. The networks always cancel the good shows. SAVE JERICHO!!!!!!!!!!!

Jericho is the one and only reason I watch CBS it would be terrible to see such an amazing piece of television history and greatness be torn away from a culture that so desperately needs to break away from the game shows, reality television and dull repetitious sit-coms that have created a vacuum that is devouring truly great television that inspires and makes you feel as though you are right in the thick of the action standing side by side with your fellow Rangers!
