While I would be the first in line to say that putting shows on a 3 month hiatus isn’t good for ratings and that CBS botched that – as NBC did with Heroes last year, as ABC did by holding out LOST until January of this year, etc., the ‘Jericho ain’t over until Carol Barbee says it’s over’ line of thinking is almost certainly complete nonsense. At least if CBS is actually airing the “tie it all up, no cliffhanger” series finale.
It’s not completely untenable for Barbee and the crew at Jericho, assuming they can find a home. There’s a way around it and it has been done once and by a CBS show to boot. Dallas. Dallas ended its 1984-1985 season by running over Bobby Ewing with a car and killing him right on the screen. Patrick Duffy wanted out so he could be a star, and they took him…out.
Dallas is one of the primary reasons I don’t buy into the HUT/PUT as much as the average lemming. This is the same old school legacy thinking that causes some to obsess over lead-in. The data is in. Lead-in just ain’t that big a deal. It’s not that lead in is never important. If the Super Bowl is your lead-in, it’s a big deal. If American Idol is your lead-in, it’s a bigger deal than if it wasn’t, but more than 50% of the AI viewers will tune out anyway. Remote control rules all and once we didn’t have to get up off our butts to change the channel the world changed and lead-in became vastly less significant. Many whine about the low HUT/PUT on Fridays, but in the glory days of my youth (I was 22 when the Dallas 1984-85 season ran) Dallas was the #2 show for the whole season with a 24.7 household rating and a 37 share to boot. On a Friday.
But after killing off Bobby, Dallas fell to 6th place for the 1985-86 season with a 21.8/35. Back then a drop of almost 3 ratings points sent the network executives into a panicked frenzy (ah, the good old days!). Fortunately, Patrick Duffy’s (who played JR’s little brother Bobby) movie career didn’t take off like he’d hoped and so they figured out a way to bring him back. When Pamela Jean Barnes Ewing (played by the lovely Victoria Principal) wakes up at the end of the finale of the 1985-1986 season, she sees not her new husband (she remarried kind of quick after Bobby’s demise), but none other than Bobby himself coming out of the shower and wishing her a good morning. The show ends and huge, huge props to the Dallas producers for the end credits which listed “Starring Patrick Duffy As: ?”
I LOVED the question mark. I didn’t like the handy dandy tidy way they solved all of that at the beginning of the 1986-1987 season though when it turns out Pam had dreamed the entire 1985-1986 season (other than Bobby wishing her a good morning with a towel wrapped around him).
If the series finale aired for Jericho ties things up so much that it makes it hard to continue the show, they can do the dream deus ex machina thing and it will be way easier than it was for Dallas to handle. Dallas suffered all kinds of plotline and continuity issues as a result, not to mention that Bobby’s death was also written into the story of spinoff Knots Landing. Still, it was probably a good move for CBS, ratings held on fairly steady for the next 2 years before dropping out of the top 20 and then ending its run a couple of years later. But Dallas was a show with huge ratings. It averaged a 31.2/52 (household rating/share) for the 1980-1981 season. Those were different times. Jericho could conceivably pull it off much easier than Dallas – they’d only have to have one episode as a dream. I don’t love the solution, but if that’s the best way to continue the storyline, undo the “series” finale and get the show back on the air somewhere picking up where it left off last Tuesday? Fine by me.
I don’t see the dream scenario as a likely means for Jericho to land on another network. So unless CBS is fibbing a little bit about which episode its airing, I think this Tuesday marks the last new episode of Jericho we’ll ever see anywhere. But I reserve the right to change my mind once I’ve actually seen the finale. I will definitely be watching.

I disagree with the mention on ABC holding out Lost until January as an example of a bad hiatus thing. It was always planned to come back late, even later than that I think had there been no strike, and I have no problem with it.
It’s just like Fox holding on 24, in order to allow the season to air without reruns or any kind of hiatus, and that is good!
What’s killing shows is putting awfully long hiatus within a season, like CBS did with Jericho last season, or ABC with last season on Lost, airing 6 episodes and then having us wait for weeks and weeks and weeks before it got back.
Anyays, from what I read the ending CBS will air isn’t a “tie it all up, no cliffhanger”, just a “no cliffhanger” one, but not everything will be resolved. One had a cliffhanger and opened things for another season, the other one – that CBS will air – it meant to work as a series finale but not without leaving a few things open so that there still could be something after, like say another season or another network…

I hope CBS is fibbing about what ending they’re showing. Even if they do show the finale tie up episode, there is still hope for another network. Not much hope, but some.

If there was a strong possibility to find another home, I wonder if the production company has thought about suing CBS to enjoin it from showing the series finale. If showing the finale would prevent the company from reaching an agreement somewhere else, that would likely qualify as irreparable harm to justify an injunction against CBS.

I agree with Fred. It has been implied that the non-cliffhanger ending will not be as definitive as to prevent a series continuation (though this doesn’t really matter atm). They left so many plot points hanging it is unlikely they will be all resolved in the series finale. Especially the revolution stuff: I highly doubt they’ll start one and end it in only one episode.

It’s an interesting theory, Robert, but if it means; in any way, changing what has happened in the 7 episodes fans fought for, I say no. CBS is definitely holding which finale they are going to air over our heads not to tease the fans, but to attract non-fans and viewers in general. It’s a smart move, but I’m not sure if it’ll work to Jericho’s benefit since they’ve already axed the show again, but they should air the cliffhanger out of respect to the shows writers, producers, and cast who may not be ready to throw in the towel yet. While chances are slim that another network may want to pick it up, that possibility should not be eliminated. In the end, it’s not up to CBS to decide Jericho’s fate; it’s up to Carol and Jon.

Carol Barbee et al. have said that they are shopping the show to other networks, so it would stand to reason that whatever the “series” finale is – it does not tie up the entire story, but merely the second season story line only. Many of the plot lines were sacrificed to a 7 episode season. There are many avenues to pursue.
It ain’t over til it’s over!

We’re not going down without a fight. CBS may have slit their own throats with this one, but the Jericho rangers aren’t giving up.
LONG LIVE JERICHO!

Fred, I had put LOST in the mix because when I did quick comparisons with last year’s ratings, LOST seemed to be down some – but I didn’t really use enough data points and LOST is more affected than a lot of shows by heavy DVR usage. Last year Nielsen’s panel had far fewer DVR owners in it than this year.
I think you’re right and LOST did not really suffer any ratings attrition to speak of as a result of pushing the season start back. I’ll try to put together a table of last year’s numbers to compare with this year.
As for the Jericho finale, and how many ends will actually be left loose — I’ll have a much better idea tomorrow night!! If I had two finales to produce, one a cliffhanger and one not, there would be an awful lot of stuff blown up in the “no cliffhanger” version. We’ll see!

It’s also been stated by the Jeircho Producers and cast, that the “Finale Tie it all up” Episode. does nothing of the sort, it provides limited closure. but leaves enough open that the show could continue elsewhere.

Seriously, isn’t it time for “Jericho” fans to just let it go? You are getting way more of a wrap-up and a sense of closure than almost any other cult series achieves, and that is because you were such great fans and you willed these seven episodes to happen. But eventually, all good things must come to an end.

not a chance in hell Rob….im an international fan of jericho and i went through hell and high water to see season 2…im not giving up as long as i have 1 breath left in me…i have been hooked on only 1 oter show..MASH… and i agree with u Andrew about the cliffhanger ending…cbs should have at least that much respect for everyone who loves this show…even if cbs doesnt want jericho that doesnt mean all other networks will join in…i want to see more jericho

Nina Tessler over at CBS stated that the series finale will give some closure but leave it open enough that if another network wanted to, there could be another season. I for one will be thrilled to see a season three. I was one of the people who helped bring Jericho back for season two and I am back to help bring Jericho back for season three, come hell or high water! The Jericho Rangers will stop at nothing to get our show back on the air.
The revolution starts NOW!

To be honest, they’ve always said it still leaves avenues and my guess is it ties off the threads of the things they don’t think they could bring back with the show on another Network. Cable shows have limited numbers of leads, so I am guessing it will mostly give closure to certain things. My impression is that if they had gotten to air the cliffhanger, it was apparently a doozie. Dan and Karim said the other night that the alternat ending will *definitely* be on the DVD and they are hoping to get it online for people to view. Me, I want to see it. You know, I can’t think of one series that I’ve ever seen that had a GOOD “final” episode. None of the Star Treks, which were long term planned final eps, ever satisfied me. M*A*S*H ticked me off (I was pretty young, but I still can’t figure out why Henry had to die when everything was OVER). In some ways, there isn’t a point to have final episodes. Even in alternate realities, things just go on. At least I have my imagination. I still think this show would work on a cable network. People act like it was getting 1 million eyes a week on it instead of at least 6 million.
I still think you are wrong about lead ins. But also just the time slot. And not as many people as you think DVR things (I even know one person who has had a dvr for two years and still doesn’t know how to use it. My customers in our small cable system can’t get dvrs and TIVO uses all their long distance). But I sure know a BUTTLOAD of people who have downloaded it off iTunes.
Still, I will love to see what ratings what ever they put in its place get. If whatever it is pulls some gigantic number.OK.
Mostly, I sometimes think that people are kind of afraid of the show itself. I know that a lot of people I approached had the impression from the time it aired that it was ‘doomed’ and didn’t want to invest. That sure as h*ll didn’t help anything. And I think that the same reason I love it (because, I live in the midwest, and believe me, they got these characters right) due to the fact that its like seeing a really believable alternative reality with people that I know, in places like I live, is too much for others. They like a nice comfortable, “nothing like my life” setting.
I guess we’ll see. All I know is it is time for a change for niche viewers. Is there no one that wants OUR money? OUR patronage? I guess not.
And I wish Moonlight fans good luck. It’s been a nice second half of the first season, but I don’t expect them to have much more luck than we did because it too, no matter how enthusiastic the fans, is a very niche audience.

Folks, ask Nina T and Carol B. this question: does CBS airing the “series finale” make it a lot more difficult for them to shop the show to other networks? I think it must, regardless of what anyone might say, but I’m wrong an awful lot and I hope this is one of those times!
It will be interesting to find out in the aftermath at what point they started thinking about other networks and shopping the idea. Jericho’s producers had to know from the season 2 premiere ratings that the outcome with CBS was inevitable. Were the producers in a frenzy to shop the show elsewhere already or did they wait until CBS’ annoucement? I hope we find out.

Karen: we know what the DVR numbers are and that Nielsen says only 2.1 out of 10 homes has them. So I’m aware that 7.9 out of 10 homes don’t. So why would I think everyone is DVRing things? I don’t!
I agree timeslot matters, but if a repeat of L&O at 10pm can do way better than Jericho, then it is not all timeslot related. I don’t think that lead-in doesn’t matter, only that it doesn’t matter very much. The data seems to back me up. If you have a case to make that is based on data, that disagrees please post it! Thanks.

Okay I just got the word Jericho is done after Tuesday because its ratings are low. This just shows you that people who think Survivor,Big Brother,American Idol, all those shows….. dont have a life. They are so up into other peoples lives to know what they are doing next. Give me a break who cares! I have better things to do then worry about who will be the next top singer or survived a camp out or stuffed in a Ginger bread house with 10 people. Shows like Jericho is what needs to be on, not the drama of oh no I dont like you in this house because you looked at me. Blah blah blah… get over it. I think they are making a big mistake. I would rather watch re-runs of full house with my kids then the real life shows…. I want ACTION and sit at the edge of your seat, pumped up for the next show… then the Drama of hurt feelings.. I already have that with the husbands ex.
Okay I just got the word Jericho is done after Tuesday because its ratings are low. This just shows you that people who think Survivor,Big Brother,American Idol, all those shows….. dont have a life. Well, hopefully, we can ask Carol on blogtalkradio, who is hoping to get her on soon. I expect you can tell more after tomorrow night from your own observations as could I. I do know that they have said from the get go the series finale just ties up some things but leaves it open to shop. I also know that it’s a slim chance, but it is interesting to me that CBS Paramount has been supportive in this. I would imagine the pickings are slim, maybe three networks.
I just threw the DVR thing out there because I am often seeing people say about the 10 pm time slot “why don’t you dvr it”. (Which is of course, the only thing that *might* count).
Robert, my personal belief is that the data available is unreliable. I know that is not the popular thought among the statistic lovers, but you cannot convince me that now days, with such a variety available instead of just the big 3 networks, and a sample that is not truly random, but self choosing (because come on, yes, people are randomly approached but I would bet you dollars to donuts the people who choose to take a box fall into certain non-random categories) which scientifically puts a questionable light on data. Plus, although Nielsen supposedly has “overseeing” I don’t think that can possibly be seen as independent oversight unless those overseeing have their *own* boxes in their own equal but different sampling group. So data schmata. Sorry, but other than YES, AI has a huge amount of viewers and YES shows like Jericho are small niche audience viewers, I really distrust the “data” that is provided. And I’m still waiting to hear how Nielsen’s could account for any bump, no matter the size, of recruited viewers for a specific show in their overnights, meaning there is no way, short of recruiting 20 million viewers for Jericho, any rise in ratings would show. Honestly too, there was a stigma of “why watch a doomed show” for getting new *casual* viewers (because despite what CBS says, that was the impression Joe Schmoe got from ep.1 of season 2; and their scheduling certainly didn’t help that idea. If it looks like filler after a writers strike, and tastes like filler, it’s probably filler; why wait 7 months to put on your “revived” show?)
Look it isn’t just me that feels that way. The industry obviously has its reservations on how ratings are tracked and the absence of online media counting or it wouldn’t be rumbling about it now.
Lastly, it can’t be a completely unattractive proposition if SciFi is developing at least two “original programs” that are based on similar themes (which is the word on why SciFi has passed on Jericho). That’s the shame of it. If Jericho is not picked up, probably a pale carbon copy may become available, but not the genuine, GOOD article.

Is the show attractable and profitable to other 2nd tier networks if the only traffic that they will get will be to their websites and not their live watchers?

Everyones talking about JERICHO’s alternate ending like it ends everything.
As it’s been reported, the only real difference is one wraps up the season and the the other doesn’t.
They don’t answer all the questions and mysteries of the SERIES, just the questions and mysteries of THE SEASON.
Clearly, they wouldn’t be talking ’shopping’ the show around if they didn’t paint themselfs into a corner!

I have to confess that the whole Nielsen system seems outdated and unreliable. I am in my mid 30s, have a B.A. and an M.A., I own a business, network continually and I do not know a single Nielsen household. I have to believe there is a better way of tracking viewership data.
I found Jericho after it had been cancelled the first time. I watched all of the first season episodes online over a 2 day period. I was instantly hooked. I have to say that I am extremely disappointed and sad that Jericho has been cancelled again. My feeling all along has been that Season 2 was a token for the fans and was never a serious attempt to give the show a second chance. If CBS really wanted to see Jericho succeed then why didn’t they make more of an effort to promote the show and why did they chose the kiss of death time slot.

a B.A. and an M.A. doesn’t necessarily mean you weren’t focusing too much on math or statistics, but I’m guessing that research, sample size, error rates and the like weren’t the focus of your academic pursuits.
It’s not fun reading, but if you can make your way through it, you will come to understand just how easy it is for someone to have a sample size that is accurate enough to project out to a US television audience of more than 280 million people aged 2 and above and still in a lifetime never meet anyone who was part of the sample:

Denny, do you know for a FACT that the bomb doesn’t go off in Jericho?
I don’t know for a fact that it does, and I’m guessing that it won’t, but until I see the show I’m feeling ok about speculating. We’ll know tomorrow night!

I actually did research (transgenic technology) in undergrad for one of the world’s leading reproductive physiologist. I do understand a little about sampling and statistics, but not a lot really. However, wasn’t it CBS that used sampling to incorrectly project winners in a recent Presidential election? Just food for thought:)
It is certainly possible that I will never meet someone who is a part of the nielsen sampling. Let it be known that it has nothing to do with how connected I am
Afterall, I do know a lot of people!

Fair enough Lukey. Believe it or not, I trust Nielsen’s sampling more than I trust CBS.
I’ll hit up some people I know who have 5000 friends on Facebook and 5000 friends on Twitter and see if they know a Nielsen family. If all three of you don’t know any then I’m sure we can safely conclude there are in fact NO Nielsen families, that we never travled to the moon, that the government is well aware of the alien presence on Earth and also knows where Bigfoot lives.
P.S. Elvis is still alive!

Hahaha. That made me chuckle. By the way, I have strong evidence suggesting that we never traveled to the moon – at least that is what my sister told me. According to her it was all a trick using mirros. Probably in a CBS sutdio. Luckily that was before Nielsen (I think) or they would have cancelled that one too.
I would love to know what 10000 friends of someone turns up in terms of the nielsen family. Anyway, I have enjoyed reading your stuff. Keep it coming along with Jericho Season 3.
P.S. Just say the word and I’ll get you his autograph!

LMFAO.
Isn’t that more of a Fox move?
$10 bucks says Dollhouse is canceled by episode 13 (Is Tim Minear on this one?)
I can say I’ve never met a nielsen family. I did the paper journals once one week but it wasn’t when Jericho was running so the only show I got to help boost was Supernatural.

Danielle – I was hoping that someone would get a laugh from my tongue & cheek comments. It is my way of dealing with the death of a friend – Jericho.
The truth of it all is that I place a lot of blame on CBS for the poor ratings. However, I do honestly have to say that I don’t know what went on in the “war room” at CBS. The other thing is that Jericho is clearly the best drama on tv…to me, there is a good chance that my opinion is not shared with the vast majority of the national viewing audience. All I know is that I conncted with this show in a way that was unique.

Huh, doesn’t that negate someones comment that Nielsen does not use paper journals anymore (since 1987?)

Jericho is like the guy or girl that you just met that you feel this incredible chemistry and connection. You spend tons of time getting to know them and falling in love with them only to have that person suddenly ripped from your life knowing you will most likely never see them again or even know what happens to him or her or even how life turns out for them. It is difficult to say goodbye!

I think it was mentioned that they don’t do them except in sweeps time when more data is needed but the paper journals never make or break anything or something like that. I don’t know, but I did them for a week and it was really hard to keep track of everything you watched.
I actually got a call last week from Neilsen to do paper journals again but when I told them I wasn’t Latino, they said no thanks LOL. Oh well.
And yeah Luckey, the comment made me smile. I’m so sick of the shows I love getting canned but what can you do? Firefly, The Black Donnelly’s, Rome, Wonderfalls, Veronica Mars now Jericho (Please, PLEASE no one cancel Supernatural or Dexter). I’ve had to say goodbye to so many, I guess its time for another bittersweet ending.

There will definitely be more Dexter (at least on Showtime) and more Supernatural — at least if the CW doesn’t have a massive overhaul. Currently CW wants to target 18-34 year old woman. I have faith Sam & Dean can pull a few of those in.

LOL Sam and Dean might be able to pull that off. I was amazed when Supernatural was renewed for season four without any drama. Now all the fans don’t know what do to with their ‘Save Supernatural’ petitions!
And Dexter is just pure awesomeness. I’ve heard its doing good on Showtime, but I wasn’t sure about actual numbers or anything like that.

Jericho is the best drama series on TV, and certainly a much better investment of time than Big Brother. BB gets even lower ratings than Jericho but it gets renewed while the ‘cho gets the axe. Since Jericho admittedly costs more than BB to produce, CBS is clearly interested in advertising revenue and not in producing quality television. May I suggest that CBS just run commercials 24-hours-a-day? That would be cheaper still.
I hope that Carol Barbee finds a new, more deserving home for this incredible story. Wherever you go, Jericho, I will be watching.
CBS, you had your chance. Enjoy your standing: first in line at the death of network television.

Jericho is the only show on CBS I watch. you are losing a show of the caliber of Lost, Heroes. They don’t have enough of those to cancel one of their saving graces. Need to rethink and retool how they advertise the show!!!!

“May I suggest that CBS just run commercials 24-hours-a-day? That would be cheaper still.”
LOL. What’s scary about a statement like this is I am really waiting for the time to come for hour long dramas to be thirty minutes long with thirty minutes of commericals. Running a network isn’t about creating quality television entertainment, its about getting the most amount of eyes on your station. Whether that be through gimmicks like Britney Spears on HIMYM or life destroying reality tv shows like Moment of Truth. The bottom line is money and television for entertainment is just a side effect.
Of course without commericals, advertisers wouldn’t be willing to drop the big bucks on shows like Jericho or Lost or Heroes and then these shows would cease to exist.

Danielle — I think some of that has to do with people generally being uh…thrifty. If 40million out of 65 million cable homes don’t have a digital set-top box, they are also not likely to have any HBO or Showtime either.
If HBO and Showtime tripled the amount of subscribers I think we’d have a problem with more good TV than there is time in the day to watch it!
“You get what you pay for” didn’t get to be a cliche’ for no reason at all. I worry that the days where we even get a Lost, Heroes, Jericho (or Supernatural!) on Broadcast TV are numbered. Fortunately a lot of things are cyclical and perhaps great ratings for unscripted shows will be one of them. But until the unscripted, much cheaper to produce shows don’t draw great ratings, I’m not all that optimistic.
But as long as I have HBO/Showtime plus Lost, House and Supernatural, I won’t complain

Wow. first time in a long time I don’t have anything (TV related) to look forward to after Jericho. Okay, there’s football in the fall.

I have make this quick for …yes you guess it
WORK! Which in turn, made me the money to buy my dvr. In turn I use to record Jericho one of the best shows that out there now. But now with doom looming in the horizon? I guess I’ll set the timer back NBC Law and Order.
Sorry CBS you had one loyal fan!!
Now when I see CBS I think now that it stands for: Canceling-Best-Shows!
Power of the little people!!
JERICHO RULES!!

I agree about things being more about what makes the most money and not about what’s actually good tv. It’s very disappointing to turn on the tv and see for the most part what amounts to a bunch of crap. I find myself watching less and less tv as time goes on. I also think that networks do try to cater to what people want and if the majority of people want shows like Jerry Springer, daytime soaps and never-ending reality tv shows, what does that say about people in general… (Present company excluded. LOL)
I’ll be really sad to see Jericho go!!

I stayed up until 11:00 every Tuesday watching this. I even had to watch the commercials because it is an excellent show with a great cast. It was the only show that I did not TIVO and fast forward through the commercials. If somehow they keep it on then I promise to watch the commercials even if I have to go to the website to prove it. Its so good its the fastest hour on television. (even with the commercials)
ps: The only good thing about reality shows is that is makes great time to do something besides watch TV.
Perhaps enough viewers could ban together to make their own network. I’m for bringing back the 4400 also.

Bring it back. It has a strong niche following. I even got my wife watching it! I love it and I very sad to hear the news regarding third season. It is the best action drama

I quit watching CBS in 2000-when they cancelled Now and Again-and didn’t turn it on until they had the good sense to put Jericho on. Too bad that good sense was so short-lived.
Now I can cross CBS off my viewing list permanently. But that’s okay. Unless the Sci Fi channel picks it up, I’m down to about five hours of television a week now. And that’s only when the programs are aired. Usually the things I watch aren’t even re-run so now I’m pretty much free until the fall season starts.
I’d rather read a book, or watch dust accumulate on my coffee table, than to watch most of the garbage that’s out there.

I am thankful for shows like Heroes, Lost and Supernatural. I think we’re lucky to have them. I’m glad at least two out of the three pull in enough numbers not to constantly be on the bubble giving me a stomache ache waiting to hear if they’ve been renewed or not.
Its funny because I can remember a time in my life when there was something on prime time every week night that I wanted to watch (except maybe friday). The other day I was flipping through channels and I couldn’t find a single show on network television that wasn’t a reality show.
I keep waiting for a reality TV backlash that just hasn’t happened yet because people just keep tuning into the junk. How does Deal or No Deal get 10 million viewers? I mean, I’m not bashing the show, but there isn’t a whole lot to it, shouldn’t it be on in the morning where ‘The Price is Right’ is? Only The Price is Right is on primetime now too. I don’t get it.
Alright, well I’m going to hop off this site before I get spoiled for last night’s Jericho. Had to go to bed early because the boyfriend had a big SCE Series test to take today so I couldn’t stay up to watch the finale
Stupid CBS and their late time slot. No worries kids, I don’t have a nielsen box anyway, I’ll stream the show once I’m off work.

Jericho is one of the greatest shows on since it started. It could be so REAL, that’s scarey! Please try to keep the series on, if not on CBS, on any other channel. I see that the ratings and interest are high.
