The results for the week ending March 9, 2008 LIVE+7 (live viewing plus 7 days of DVR viewing) are out and American Idol is now the top of all charts, including this one. Idol pushed LOST out of the top spot which it held the previous two weeks. LOST’s DVR viewing really didn’t go down much and American Idol’s didn’t really go up much, but it was enough to reshuffle the top of the DVR leader board where LOST fell to third.
The Wednesday, March 5 airing of AI topped the 4 million audience mark in DVR viewers alone. But much of this is just pure timeshifting — probably to both avoid commercials and be able to skim quickly through the parts you don’t want to watch. More than 72% of AI’s DVR viewing for the 3/5 airing happened the same night the show aired. Only 47.5% of LOST’s DVR viewing occurred the same night the show aired, and LOST’s same day DVR viewing is higher than the average scripted show.
LOST was the only scripted show to make the top 5. Overall, things were split right down the middle with 10 scripted shows and 10 unscripted shows on the list. It will be interesting to see how the return of new episodes of scripted dramas and comedies changes the mix. Unfortunately, the distribution of the LIVE+7 data lags a couple of weeks or more behind, so it will be a while before we report on it.
Both parts of the two-espisode season finale of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles made the list and both episodes had nearly two million DVR viewers.
Jericho had pretty good DVR usage, coming in 13th on the list. But it proved to be an unlucky 13, as CBS announced last Friday it had cancelled Jericho. I don’t know if good DVR#s will improve Jericho’s chances of finding a home on another network, but it shouldn’t hurt it any. We’ll cross our fingers.
If you want even more DVR viewing info, see the post here which also includes a table of shows that gained the highest % of viewers over their live #s. We also have LIVE+7 data for the top 20 most DVRd cable shows Bravo’s Project Runway was tops on that list with just over a million DVR viewers.
If the information in the table below is confusing to you, we understand. It’s a lot of data. An explanation of what the data means is under the table.
