JERICHO FANS WORK TO BE PART OF HISTORY….AGAIN!

Posted on 30 March 2008 by Robert Seidman

I know I said I would never write about Jericho again, but this isn’t my writing so it doesn’t count.  This comes to us from Amber who is in support of JerichoNet2.com’s efforts to revive the show.  But as long as I’m here… I recently played around with the new service at FriendFeed.com.  FreindFeed is sort of an aggregator for all the social networking services avaialable.

One interesting thing resulted.  Although I have only ”friended”  a few people and only eight people have friended me, two out of the eight watched Jericho.  Including me, that makes three out of nine.   Since it’s completely random — the people who friended me don’t live in my neighborhood, and the two people who claim Jericho, I’ve never met either of them face-to-face, although one of them I’ve “known” for years.  I did pause to think, “what are the odds that three out of nine people (including me) watched Jericho, and Niesen isn’t at least a little screwed up?” I’m still pondering.  Here’s the press release:

JERICHO FANS WORK TO BE PART OF HISTORY….AGAIN!

March 23, 2008 – “How does it feel to be part of history? Don’t Tread on Me!” It’s the new battle cry of the next Jericho fan revolution. On March 22nd, CBS once again canceled Jericho, and within minutes, the fan efforts to solve the problem had kicked back into action. CBS’ serial drama Jericho, originally debuting on September 20, 2006, had been canceled once before, but the network resurrected it after the fans paid homage to Jericho character Jake Green (portrayed by actor Skeet Ulrich) uttering “Nuts!” to a request for surrender during the heat of battle. This line inspired a fan protest involving 40,000 pounds of nuts being shipped to CBS, forcing the network to reconsider its decision and to agree to a seven-episode Season 2.

According to CBS, Nielsen ratings had not been high enough this time around to encourage the network to buy into a third season for Jericho, leading to the show’s second cancellation before the March 25th airing of the seventh and final episode with had been shot with two alternate endings: a cliffhanger if picked up for another season, and an open-ended, show-ending conclusion to the seven episode arc storyline. CBS aired the latter version, and fans, deeming it also to be a cliffhanger itself, were inspired to begin the fight again to preserve Jericho for another round of storytelling.

Rumors had already begun circulating that Jericho’s Executive Producer Carol Barbee had been already ‘shopping’ the show to cable networks – where Jericho’s ratings, considered sub-par by CBS, would be stellar elsewhere. According to Barbee and other sources close to Barbee, the SciFi and CW networks continue to be possibilities for picking up Jericho. Fans have now sprung into action, currently sending e-mails and letters and making phone calls to both networks.

Jericho fans – well-versed in their abilities to make a difference through efforts involving over $20,000 in donations to the Greensburg, Kansas, building fund, DVD shipments to troops overseas, and an affiliation with Project Homefront – are now refocusing their endeavors toward an organized multiphase effort to win a new home for their favorite show. They also have set up an alternate online rally point in anticipation of CBS’ Jericho Web site eventually going dark.

Fans are working hard to show Paramount they have a marketable product in Jericho and we are appealing to them to let it continue. Also appreciated are your own personal observations and words that Jericho fans are out there. Even with the current flawed system of counting with Nielson, these viewership numbers are ones that should be welcomed by a cable network. Thank you for posting these efforts.

Thanks, Mr. Seidman! Yes, Jericho fans are out there, and I run into new ones every day. Here’s hoping that another network picks up on the passion of Jericho fans and continues with a storyline that has so much more to give. By the way, you had said you probably wouldn’t write about Jericho again — today, I’m glad you did!

Thank you Robert. My son asked all of the kids in his senior class if they watch Jericho. He figured it out and 52% said yes. There are more fans then the numbers say.My son inlaw is in the Air Force and he said that Jericho by far is the show of choice at Mcguire Air Force base.He says it has a cult following. Something has to be wrong with how they are counting the numbers.

What a bummer, the 2nd cancellation. I wish there were something I could do to get it back. But I’m being excluded from work LT, so all I could do is send correspondence, e-mails. To whom? If a cable station brought “Jericho” back, I couldn’t see it – can’t afford cable.

Robert, I had a similar experience with friends. While at a party there were 9 of us talking and someone mentioned Lost; 2 of us were fans and we talked some about it. Then I asked if she watched Jericho; she jumped out of her seat and said OMG! and so did someone else and we all started talking at once. Everyone else turned and looked at us and said, What you you 3 talking about? So 3 our of 9 were OMG! fans of Jericho while only 2 our of 9 were 2 who watched LOST. Go figger!

Thank you so much for writing about our campaign to find Jericho a new home. I am so tired of being told that all I want to watch is mindless drivel.

They all have soemthing to offer fans, along with all the fun going on at CBS.

Thanks for writing about Jericho’s second campaign, even though you said wouldn’t. It’s appreciated!

Jericho cannot die! This show is special; it is unique television. With Jericho’s online audience as well itss viewers who watch Jericho through alternate platforms (i.e. i-tunes, Tivo, etc), Jericho is a show that could be very profitable for a cable network. Any cable network that picked up Jericho would have a built in loyal audience of at least 4 to 5 million, and an audience of that magnitude is huge for a cable network. Come on CBS Paramount make a deal with a cable network to get Jericho on the air; it could be very profitable for you too!

CW only airs cheap poorly made shows like Pussycat girls. No way they could take on a big budget show like Jericho that costs almost $3 million an episode.

SCI-FI Channel? It was a good option when they picked up rights to air Season 1 and 2. But then they moved it from Mondays to Friday then this past weekend they pulled 2 episodes in favor of old Stargate SG-1 episodes. It isnt on at all in April. Not exactly a ringing endorsement from the suits at SCI-FI. Ive heard stories on the SCI-FI boards they are planning their own Jericho like show.

Things are looking pretty grim these days for Jericho. If Jericho showed up anywhere they would probably have to dump half the remaining cast. According the Carol Barbee they had already cut the shows budget to the bone. Minor cuts just wouldnt cut it. They would have to get rid of Jake and Hawkins (highest salaries)which would make it totally unwatchable as Season 2 was built around them.

I’d love to see Jericho at SciFi, using BSG’s freed-up budget. The fact that Jericho is currently on it’s planned first-half hiatus there is actually good news, and I am surprised that people keep referring to Caprica as a “Jericho-like show”.

I hope the bean counters at SciFi find a way to bring Jericho and our +6 million viewers over to their network :)

  75. Reddroxx says:

Robert, thanks for posting the article. While I’m sure our numbers are being heavily underestimated I think CBS has missed the big picture. While Jericho has a ton of us fans in the U.S., CBS is missing out on the overseas potential as well as viewers north and south of the border. I’ve been seeing many many fans from Canada, Mexico, the UK, and numerous other countries where the merchandising potential is wide open. While they won’t get much advertising revenue from overseas sales the potential for optioning out the merchandise rights internationally could pay off big.

    To Guess Who:
CW has shows with decent sized budgets such as Supernatural, Reaper and Smallville with largish special effects budgets and shows like Gossip Girl and any other teen soap there with largish casts. They could easily handle Jericho.

With the loss of Painkiller Jane and Flash Gordon this year and BSG next year there’s plenty of room. Carol stated last week on Shaun’s show that there isn’t much of a budgetary difference between Sci-fi and CBS and they could in fact do the show there without a problem.

CW has shows with decent sized budgets such as Supernatural, Reaper and Smallville with largish special effects budgets and shows like Gossip Girl and any other teen soap there with largish casts. They could easily handle Jericho.

With the loss of Painkiller Jane and Flash Gordon this year and BSG next year there's plenty of room. Carol stated last week on Shaun's show that there isn't much of a budgetary difference between Sci-fi and CBS and they could in fact do the show there without a problem.

I watch Jericho and think is the best show ever. CBS is wrong. The fans are there, they just don’t know how to reach them. A 10pm air time is not the way. This is a family show and should have a primetime family aire time.

I hope we can work out something with a network and bring quality TV back to the people and not this reality drool that has infected the airwaves.

Thank you for the article. I already miss Jericho. SCI-FI channel could gain 3+ million viewers and that is probably a low estimate.
I don’t know about other people’s viewing habits but I tend to watch shows I see advertised during commercials so if I am watching CBS, I tend to watch other CBS shows. Likewise if SCI-FI would pick up Jericho. I absolutly loath reality TV and knew it was the kiss of death to put Jericho on right after Big Brother.

Thank you for the article for us Jericho fans. We are trying to get the show picked up again. I also think the ratings are wrong because I speak for Three households that never get counted due to conventional means of getting TV. Just because we use antennas does not mean WE don’t watch alot of these programs. It just means they really have NO IDEA how many fans there really are out here! I hope CBS or at least someone else wises up to the fact that Jericho was a really good show and does deserve to be brought back and treated properly.

CBS…Nothing to say about the suits there. They have a job and it is all about numbers.

Much has been said about poor time slots, long hiatus and the lack of continuity of the Jericho saga…CBS did not handle the show well.

But the fact of the matter is this… It is a thinking man’s show…it provokes thought and stimulates the imagination. For those who can’t follow a theme or consistent thread through a book, play or movie… they watch “American Idol” or “Reality” shows.

Why? Because it doesn’t take the mental capacity to “remember” what ties last week to this week.

Ever consider why the original “Nuts” campaign was so effective? I believe it was because the average IQ score of most Jericho Fans are probably to the right of the Bell curve. Also, they are the ones in their communities that are leaders and supporters of positive action.

But CBS is not after the leaders, positive action seeking individual…They want the numbers…the masses…the mindless sheep that will just tune in for the 1 hour totally encapsulated and packaged show. But my question is…where would the real spending dollars be in that situation… It would seem to me that intelligence, leadership and positive action seekers/makers are STILL well rewarded in society.

Jericho’s fan base are savvy internet users, organizers, motivators and action seekers. I doubt that a very high percentage of them are couch potatoes…except when Jericho is broadcasting in whatever horrible time slot it just “happens” to fall. Once again, it is all about numbers…not about the quality show or the dedicated viewership.

I hope someone… somewhere decides to pick up where CBS drops out and continues with the Jericho saga… There is so much life left in this show…

But, I agree w/ OKJhawkgirl – hopefully the next full column about Jericho will be to announce Season 3.

I talk to everyone when i’m in line at the grocery store, Wal-Mart, video store etc about Jericho. People who had never even heard of Jericho, I told them to rent or buy season 1 or watch online, on Demand anything. I also now pass on our new fight, and many people have join in. Fight on Rangers WE WILL WIN.

Jericho is about a what if world, but one that is far too close to ours to escape the questions it raises. For those to whom these questions are too disturbing it will never be watched. But there are plenty of us who will, and we will follow the show whereever it goes.

Our fandom is on the right side of the bell curve. The thing that I first fell in love with on the boards was the mythology threads, where the intellictual level is several layers deeper than most boards. We are the people who had stopped watching network television and discovered a few shows besides Jericho that were enjoyable. When Jericho, and in memory of other shows that had been treated the same, are canceled, we tend to walk away.

We do tend to watch cable channels like Discovery and the history channel though, so when quality drama is offered with a chance of its surviving we’ll watch. These networks would not exist without an audience who thinks. Jericho has that audience and we are ready and waiting to watch season 3 on the cable channel of paramount’s choice.

I find it interesting that when you put a show in a timeslot that follows the 2nd lowest rated show on the network (Big Brother) that there seems shock in the network that it didnt do well. Geee, no Sh!t. This is a no brainer. CBS did not plan on Jericho being a success. They deliberatly put in in a position to fail.
And I find it also interesting that a show that has5 million viewers gets cancelled, and another show (BSG) with only 3 million get 4 seasons.

CBS never wanted Jericho to succeed.
