CBS “On The Bubble” No More

Posted on 31 March 2008 by Bill Gorman

cbs.gifOur Renew or Cancel? posts have been on hiatus since the new fall shows went dormant. Now we’ve got some data on the spring shows as well, and it’s time to look at the numbers and take some guesses on who’s coming back next fall and who’s going away permanently.

I’m going to do this on a network by network basis, so that the different shows that are in question can be looked at vs. their competition both outside and inside their own network.

In the spirit of the NCAA basketball tournament, the shows “On the Bubble” for CBS are fan favorites Jericho (Update: on 3/21/08, CBS announced it would not renew Jericho), Moonlight and Cane 5/13 Update: Both Cancelled.. Let’s take a look at their chances for being renewed or cancelled.

UPDATE: Go here to see the 2008 Fall Schedule for CBS.

*since Jericho hasn’t had the same competition in its timeslot this spring, this is an average of its 5 broadcasts.

The Case for Moonlight

[UPDATE: Moonlight has been cancelled by CBS]

  • Moonlight ratings put it #30 at CBS for season to date adults 18-49, and #26 for average viewers.
  • Moonlight aired in a lightly viewed timeslot on Fridays, so its relative timeslot ratings matter. There it was very slightly behind Friday Night Lights [18-49, 2.90m, Viewers, 6.21m] for the 18-49 lead, but solidly in second place for average viewers behind Women’s Murder Club [18-49, 2.63m, Viewers, 8.94m].
  • Moonlight gets another chance to prove itself this spring with 4 new episodes starting April 11.

The Case for Cane

[UPDATE: Cane has been cancelled by CBS]

  • Cane ratings put it #26 at CBS for season to date adults 18-49, and #20 for average viewers.
  • Cane’s Tuesday timeslot is more highly viewed than Moonlight’s. There it was a consistent third, trailing both Law and Order: SVU [18-49, 5.79m, Viewers, 12.01m] and Boston Legal [18-49, 3.95m, Viewers, 9.89m] by significant margins, particularly in the 18-49 demo.

The Case for Jericho

[UPDATE: Jericho has been cancelled by CBS]

  • Jericho ratings put it #27 at CBS for season to date adults 18-49, and #29 for average viewers.
  • Jericho hasn’t had the same competition in its timeslot for its 5 outings so far, so comparisons are a bit trickier. It has consistently finished very far behind reruns of Law & Order: SVU in both total viewers and adults 18-49. Jericho typically edged out the ABC competition of either Boston Legal or Primetime in the 18-49 demo for second place, but consistently finished third for total viewers except the one night it moved up to second against the pathetic Quarterlife.
  • Unlike Moonlight & Cane, which ran their new episodes generally vs. other new competition, Jericho had no new episode competition from NBC [except, Quarterlife] and faced Primetime specials 3 nights from ABC. So it needs to be noted that Jericho’s performance comes against much weaker competition from the other broadcast networks.

My Guesses

It’s possible that all 3 of these shows get the axe, but I think that’s unlikely. But even with CBS scrambling after the writer’s strike, I think there’s is no chance they’re all coming back.

My money is on a Moonlight renewal and Cane and Jericho cancellations.

Fans, what do you think will happen?

  1. suan says:

I’m a fan of both Moonlight and Jericho. I’ve never seen Cane before. I’d love to see Moonlight and Jericho both come back for new seasons.

  2. Lighthope says:

It is difficult to say which would be renewed and which would be cancelled without knowing how much each episode costs to make vs. ad revenue. This is ultimately what doomed the original Battlestar Galactica.

Theoretically, a show can have few viewers, but if the costs to make said show is only ten dollars, then the ad revenue will make this show a winner in any accountant’s book.

So for Jericho fans (beyond asking what possesses you to like this hack-written show), how much does it cost to make? How much is it making in revenue? If it isn’t making enough money, then kiss this show good-bye.

Likewise, if the show only makes for the network X dollars profit, yet another show will make X+Y profit, then again goodbye Jericho.

It’s all economics. True, sometimes networks will save or kill a show because they like it or hate it (see the original Star Trek), but mostly it’s economics.

  3. Suziq says:

Thank you for the analysis. I agree with you. Of the 3 shows, Moonlight is the most likely to receive a renewal.
Moonlight is the only one of the 3 that was asked to produce more episodes this spring. Also Moonlight’s numbers have been very consistant week to week. I think CBS likes that.
Considering Moonlight was given the “death slot” of 9pm Fri nights it has done pretty well.

  4. tecc says:

I also believe Moonlight will be renewed. It has won the 18-49 demo more often than not and it helped November sweeps as well.

  5. Bill Gorman says:

Lighthope, I completely agree. But while age demo ratings are a reasonable predictor of advertising revenue potential, we can only guess as to the costs for any show. Not surprisingly, the networks aren’t telling :)

  6. Leeser says:

I strongly believe that Moonlight will receive its coveted second season pickup.

However, fans need to keep passing on word of the show to people they know…pull out the iPod and share the episodes you’ve downloaded (since CBS’ streaming vids of the show appear to be down) and Turn them onto the show.

Keep the word out and good about Moonlight. It has more than earned our support.

In vampire solidarity…rah rah rah! (And all that).

  7. KIC says:

What is interesting is that as a niche product, Moonlight has a smaller chance of growth than Jericho. There really is a limited amount people interested in vampire lore (though I will say Moonlight is the first vampire show to ever interest me in any capacity, so it IS good at it) than speculative political/action drama. It can happen. I know two people who have become interested in Jericho on the strength of just the last two shows. So, me, I say keep two loyal fanbases happy. Split the season. Keep two sets of niche loyal fans. Jericho proved you can do a lot with a shorter season. Why could’t Moonlight too?

  8. Sirensong says:

Considering that Jericho re-premiered up against almost all reruns and STILL did so poorly in the ratings does not bode well for its future. Cane has a lot of high profile stars, but their ratings seemed to be inconsistent and actually slipped quite a bit from its premiere stats. Moonlight alone has come close to maintaining its premier numbers. And as someone else said, given its “death slot” on Friday nights, I think it has done rather well. Women’s Murder Club may have beat it in total viewership, but Moonlight consistently beat WMC in the all important Demo.

  9. Moonlight has performed very well and I am confident that it will be back for a second season.

There has been so much going on with the writers strike, and behind the scenes changes that the show could have just not made it through all of the turmoil.

It did make it however, and I am looking forward to many more episodes. This show is a winner, and it has earned and deserves a second season.

Moonlight is a solid favorite with a loyal and devoted fan base that will be here for every single episode starting with the return on 4/25.

  10. PV544 says:

Sorry, folks,if CBS only chooses one show to renew, I think it should be JERICHO. There’s really nothing new about CANE (which I could not bear to watch) or MOONLIGHT (vampires again? Give us ANGEL!). JERICHO has an interesting premise, excellent writing, direction, production and acting.

  11. KIC says:

Do you know how many people I”ve talked to who said “I don’t want to get involved with a show that is doomed” or “oh didn’t they just make some shows to finish it for the fans”. If you knew someone who knew what was up it could be corrected but how many people didn’t even give it a chance do to that? All the talk and the “renew” for Jericho didn’t play that way to much of the public. And sorry but the lead in *sucked*. Maybe if there hadn’t been a strike and they could have gotten the cast out on talkshows before the premiere it would be different but people in general heard nothing about Jericho after June. Is it a wonder that 8 months later they didn’t show up to see it?

  12. KIC says:

Though I must point out if you want to say “consistant numbers” Jericho 2 has been very consistant.

  13. Michelle McDaniel says:

My tv viewing has changed over the last two years. I find myself looking at pbs, a&e fox news instead of the 3 major networks. One program that I do watch faithfully is Jericho, with the other poor progaming that the 3 neworks offer – I can only hope that this program will be renewed.

  14. Kyle says:

When I was young I used to watch Star Trek — and then they also cancelled it — but then did.

My parents bought a new TV just to watch the last episode of the Fugitive (as our other one had died).

When I had my first big dish, I used to stay up late just to watch the “feed” of Bev Hills 90210 — since then I have not watched a regular TV show faithfully.

Jericho is the first regular TV show I watch regularly since the Brenda Years of 90210.

I don’t get regular “local” channels, so I watch the one they put up on the CBS website.

I find the script mirrors the reality of today. False Flags, Martial Law, etc.

I wish they would renew for a third, but the numbers just are not there.

I really appreciate that they do not swear on Jericho.

  15. Snoodle says:

It appears that CBS viewers do not appreciate Dexter the way they should o.O….and Cane isn’t fair…it’s never on at a regular time slot :(

  16. maryp says:

The people I know who watched Jericho last year..and loved it.. do not watch it this year. It seems to have lost some steam.
Cane.. who knows. It never appealed to me when I first saw ads for it. I wouldn’t miss it.

Moonlight deserves a renewal. It did very well in a very erratic TV season. It’s got a dedicated fan base.. and has done great in the coveted 18-49 demo. I personally haven’t cared about any television show like this in years.. so I’m hoping that your speculation is correct.

  17. Marc says:

So CBS will not even look at the Live + 7 numbers? I think it’s unfair that a show is being DVR’d and the fate is in the balance of just live numbers. I guess I am thinking as a Network exec and not an advertiser.

  18. everwood says:

I agree with Moonlight being renewed. It is a great companion to Ghost Whisperer. I have been hooked from the start and the show has grown stronger as the season progressed. I liked Cane also but the intrigue was too over the top/in your face. There was not enough of a level of “slow simmer” to it to build to anything exciting. It all seemed to be been there, done that. I was exhausted after each episode and grew tired too quickly. As for Jericho, I gave up about 1/3 of the way through the first season. It seems to be a different show than what the pilot was selling. Which seems to be the running theme for Jericho. A lot of talk about one thing and then something else was filmed and shown. If any show needed to be resurrected, I could have picked hundreds that were more deserving than Jericho.

  19. Add the live+7 numbers in for one, add them in for all — but then things are more or less the same. Not exactly the same, but, more or less.

  20. schmiale says:

I am a fan of both Jericho & Moonlight!!
Well, when it comes to quality, writing, and acting, Jericho should win and get renewed!!
But the thing is, I absolutely LOVE Moonlight as well ;-)
Jericho is all about action, suspense, great drama.. VS. Moonlight is all about romance, amazing on-screen chemistry combined with some good action and suspenseful story lines.
The one aspect that I think CBS absolutely underestimates is that there are many, many more viewers out there, then just what Nielsen reports… Nowadays, people watch shows on the internet, purchase episodes, DVR, TIVO, etc…. CBS should realize that and build on existing shows…
The funny thing is that I NEVER watched CBS before, because I am so not into procedural drama shows and if CBS really wants to attract a more younger crowd, they should continue with shows like Jericho and Moonlight! I for sure will not continue watching CBS if they cancel both shows!

  21. Lindyrb says:

All three shows started out with a lot of promise, but only Moonlight has the momentum to carry it into another season. Those who write off Moonlight as ‘just another Angel’ have obviously never watched it. It’s like calling Cane ‘just another cop show’ or calling Jericho ‘just another serial disaster show’. The quality of acting, writing and production on Moonlight make it stand out as a show worth developing and following.

    Definitely a “RENEW” for Moonlight.

  22. Tom The Patriot says:

As a previous poster said, Jericho has the best possibility to grow an audience for the future. TV is not about straight Nielsen numbers anymore. People who see even a couple of episodes are hooked.

The future is niche marketing – even for the major networks. The Tivo, iTunes and DVR numbers for Jericho point the way to the way for networks to survive, which is why CBS brought it back in the first place. Jericho also brought many casual and non-network viewers back to the eye network for the first time in many years, and which most advertisers cannot usually reach at all these days. Although they seem to skew slightly older, they are a smart and involved bunch. The problem is Nielsen cannot seem to really crunch numbers and provide good data for advertisers to really appreciate what this means. And CBS is too cheap to do their own research, as MTV does.

Granted, Jericho has had ups and downs in writing and production. But the producers and actors are much more seasoned now as well. In addition, Jericho has showed that it is very flexible mythology. Even this mini-second season, Jericho proved it can be a better show with less money and episodes and still hold its own. The drop in ratings corresponds to losing the Gerald McRaney/Pam Reed middle American and Twilight Zone/Lost softer material that costs money and that some complained about, but others must have liked (I did). Remember that it was never designed as a 10 PM all-action show. With a decent lead-in, or back at 8 PM, it could really take off like the original Star Trek. As a more flexible show, Jericho could do two 8 episode mini-seasons one year, and a full 22 the next. Name another dramatic show that can do that. I’m also surprised that the networks haven’t experimented with late night repeats of cult faves. Jericho reruns would be huge overnight. CBS would be foolish to pull the plug now. It would also be a lot cheaper than betting on one of the few pilots they have cooking. They now know what worst-case it can do. But if CBS does make a second mistake and cancel it again, CW or SciFi would snap it up and do quite well for many years.

Overall, Jericho is a great living laboratory to see how TV is going to survive, and CBS can continue to explore the future of their medium with a minimum investment.

  23. Julia says:

PV544, unfortunately, networks don’t renew or cancel based on originality or good stories. (I’ve never watched Jericho, so I can’t comment on how it compares to Moonlight, the only one of these three shows that I have watched.)

Also unfortunately, I think Moonlight is going to be renewed. I love Jason Dohring and want him to have a job, but not on a show that I can’t even bear to sit through.

  24. Christy says:

I think Moonlight will be renewed. It goes great with the CBS Friday night lineup and it has the strong fanbase who are really great at turning people onto the show. I know I’ve turned some of my friends onto it and they are hooked like I am.

The thing is, CBS will need to promote the show before its triumphant return on April 25th. The fans are doing all they can to spread the word about this show…and with CBS’s help, we can probably get the numbers to go up, up, up.

  25. Josh says:

same here, i watch Moonlight and Jericho obsevily, like i did with The Class and CBS shut that one up, if they cancel Moonlight or Jericho i’ll be less fond for CBS

  26. cobby says:

The renewal has to be Moonlight. It fits perfectly with GW, ML and then Numbers….a perfect Friday night. I would like to enlighten CBS that there are ALOT of “past” 49 yr old viewers out there….who, by the way, have $$ and like to spend it and are fanatical about Moonlight. We want OUR age group to be counted.

And, I too, like a lot of posters on all the fan blogs, am tired of investing my time and then getting pushed around like garbage AND doing the promo for the network, that the network should be doing itself. No one is paying us. It’s just for the love of the show. But they don’t give a crap. Nice way to treat the viewer. I say let’s do this in reverse. Boycott the products advertised on shows we dearly love and then get cancelled.

  27. Mike B says:

I think Jericho will get another partial renewal just as it did last year. Two cable networks are already syndicating the show, but did not complete the cycle before the new season started. Jericho is also the only show on CBS that compares in creativity to Heroes, Lost or 24.

No one appears to like Cane very much. You have to think that is gone.

  28. Grace says:

I would definately LOVE to see JERICHO renewed.
It’s different and exciting…a show with ‘heart’. A show with constant surprises.
A show with GREAT characters and fine actors.
I think one thing that hurt them was being on at 10 p.m. after BIG BROTHER that didn’t do well at all. I understand that CBS was trying to keep it away from AMERICAN IDOL and I guess CBS thought that BIG BROTHER would do better.
I will be heart-broken if CBS does not renew JERICHO. It is the only show that I have LOVED in a VERY long time.
    PLEASE CBS, I’M BEGGING…RENEW JERICHO??

  29. EvaJ says:

I like your guessing that MOONLIGHT probably will be the series to be renewed.
I was never a fan of Jericho or Cane…but good luck to those fans.
I am MOONLIGHT fan all the way through more seasons to come.

  30. KinWa says:

I really hope Jericho is renewed. I know the numbers don’t look so hot but I really think they did a great job this season, even with a lower budget and time constraints. It’s been different from season one but I have enjoyed the newer, faster pace.

  31. David Gifford says:

I wonder what would happen if someone put MOONLIGHT on at 8pm on a Wednesday, directly against American Idol. After 11 weeks of that, then they take MOONLIGHT off the air for 3 MONTHS and refuse to advertise it at all during that time. Then bring it back without much fanfare and feign amazement that numbers have dropped, cancel it, bring it back for 7 episodes but wait 8 months to do so and then place it after Big Brother on Tuesday nights at 10pm.

What do you think would happen to MOONLIGHT then? What do you think would happen with any show then?

This is part of the frustration for Jericho fans. Absolute bungling by the network in scheduling, promotion and advertising and then pointing the finger at Jericho and its fans as the reason for the low numbers.

    Quite exasperating.

  32. Addy says:

I think Cane will be given another chance, ithas high profile actors and Jimmy smits and Oscar Torre are getting awards for their performance on Cane one award they both got was on a latin Magazine Jimmy for best actor and Oscar for scene stealer.I find Cane is an interesting show their is allot to find out about Alex’s real family Santos family as well.their daughters drug addition to extasy and will Player Henry commit.WE also want to know who shot Joe samuel.I think the show is good allot of people have not given it a chance. But to each own their taste of programing because I do not like moonlight and I don’t like Jereicho.Look what they did to goerge Lopez replace his show for the caveman and his show did much better and now it is even doing great on Nick at night even if it is reruns. I think they will be giving Cane the second chance plus I called and they said they had ordered 4 epps.

  33. Edie says:

I hope Cane gets renewed. I love this show and ratings are a bit better than Moonlight and Jericho. Awesome Cast and plots. I do hope CBS will give it a another chance.

  34. Cody says:

CBS RENEW CANE! THE BEST SHOW ON TV!

  35. Leigh says:

Concerning Jericho, I watched the preview for the next episode on CBS.com. After it ends, it has the morse code message from episode 6. I don’t know how to translate so I went on the CBS message boards for Jericho. First episode of the second season was “We’re baack”. The message boards states episode 6 translates to “We’re back, again”. If that is true, we know what that means, even though it is supposed me be tied to episode 7’s code! Despite all the odds, there may be joy in Jericholand for all us who love the show;)

  36. sandy says:

MOONLIGHT – IS A GREAT SHOW. ENOUGH VAMPIRE TO MAKE IT INTERESTING. MARVELOUS STORY LINE AND BELIEVABLE ACTORS WHO HAVE “TWINKLES” IT’S FUN AND SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO. I AM SO GLAD IT IS RETURNING!!!

  37. Rodney says:

I hope CBS renews Cane. It’s a great show and it’s different. It has the best cast of any show on TV. My family and friends are hooked. I am really missing this show.

  38. KIC says:

Writers confirmed to us that is not the actual Morse code for six; it is a tack on of whoever put together the clip off ep. 1. Morse code 6 will go with “tho it is dark”. The last three all go together, just like last year’s “we pledge, allegiance, to the flag”.

  39. Dave Mueller says:

I think Moonlight will get renewed for sure unless the ratings for the next four episodes are poor, and also perhaps Jericho. I think Jericho would get renewed before Cane.

  40. Dave Mueller says:

For that matter, why doesn’t CBS put Jericho on Friday nights? The fans it does have are rabid fans, and so the overall audience would be better on Friday than on other days, since its fans would follow it regardless of the night it’s on.

  41. Bill Gorman says:

Dave, Friday is the second lowest viewing night [after Saturday]. If you read over many of our Moonlight fan comments from other posts you’d see a lot of “Now why couldn’t Moonlight be on a night better than Friday…”

  42. Brian from Canada says:

I liked Cane, I can see it being cancelled.

Cane’s problem was that it tried to do too much too quickly. The pacing of the later episodes was much better — especially when they dealt with Alex and his buddies in Little Havana. But by that time, many of the viewers who were intrigued about the series had been turned off.

As for Jericho: it’s got a Star Trek quality to it. The series was cancelled last year and got a write-in campaign that saved it… for the mid-season replacements or summer broadcasts. At this point, if they cancel it a second time, they can do the NBC thing and claim the writing campaign didn’t get them enough viewers to keep it on the air.

  43. Bob Lamb says:

I would like to see Jericho renewed. If I had to choose a second show to renew, Moonlight would probably come in a distant second. The genre has been explored before. Jericho is an original concept and I would like to see it renewed.

    Please renew Jericho!!

  44. Johnny says:

It just figures that I start falling in love with a show and it gets cancelled. This first happened with Veronica Mars (originally a CBS show, if I’m not mistaken) I started falling in love with it and.. BOOM! it’s gone. :( And now I start watching Jericho and completley fall in love with it. I watched the entire first season online and finished it in like 3 days! I feel that Jericho (like V.Mars) is a very smart, well written and acted show. I really hope it gets renewed.

  45. Danielle says:

Veronica Mars was originally a UPN show and has a spastic schedule with hardly any viewers. I don’t know what happened to the show when it moved to the CW but it lost so much of its creative genius. It was really unfortunate. That said, I was still sad to see it canceled. It was doing better than a lot of other CW shows, but just not good enough. At least CW was smart enough to hold onto Supernatural.

  46. Jericho40 says:

First of all when will everyone realize we are depending on an outdated ratings system to decide who is watching what shows. I watch Jericho every week, but I am not being counted. Actually I dont know anyone that has a Nielsen box. So how can that be accurate. Moonlight is an already done idea, I do like Cain, but how many crime drama’s do we need. And I am sick of reality TV, Jericho is refreshing, action packed and keeps me on the edge of my seat, the characters have become like family. We need a new way of deciding how many viewers a show has. And how much revenue, I purposely do business with sponsors of Jericho. If CBS cancels Jericho I think I will stop watching CBS all together.

  47. Unless and until CBS stops being Nielsen’s LARGEST client of them all, then, realizing anything about the Nielsen ratings system, other than heck yes, like it or not, it matters..simply.doesn’t.matter.

  48. OKJhawkgirl says:

I feel that Jericho should be renewed. No offense to Moonlight or Cane fans, but I watched both and couldn’t get into to it. For me Jericho has the action, intrigue and emotional ties that a makes a great TV show. Been watching since season 1, and have been on the edge of my seat during season 2. To sum it up………..renew JERICHO : )

  49. Jared says:

I think that Jericho should be renewed if anything moved to another night that they have poor ratings on anyways or they can have it ready to replace any number of the crappy new shows they put on the air as a back up plan. I don’t think the Nielson ratings can be trusted, I’ve talked to so many people at my work and elsewhere who all like Jericho. I will stop watching CBS if they cancel it. The other stations have great shows on and I can be just fine without CBS. Even my mom like Jericho and she hates these kind of shows normally.

  50. Hope says:

My money is on Jericho for a third season. It is the type of show that leaves you thinking.

  51. D says:

I think if Jericho gets a third season it’ll be on Sci-Fi, based solely off noticing that they’re re-airing season 1.

  52. joel says:

i would like to see jericho picked up for a third season i also like moonlight and cane but jericho is my favorite

  53. Dave Mueller says:

    Bill,
I guess that I didn’t explain myself well. I actually think Friday nights are good nights for specialized serials, maybe one could call them “cult hits”. The audience is only medium sized, but it is a dedicated audience and would follow to any night, even lightly viewed nights.

So the overall audience of those type of shows would be very respectable on a Friday night, but maybe not so much on other nights.

Moonlight fans may be doing it a disservice by wishing it to be on a different night. If the viewers didn’t increase, it would look worse.

  54. eddie says:

I really enjoyed Cane and despite coming on at 10:00pm on a Tuesday, I never missed an episode.

  55. Kandyegirl says:

    Heya Bill ~

Thank you for your thoughtful post :)

CBS would be smart to renew Moonlight. They were fortunate to snag Alex O’Loughlin before anyone else. He will not be jobless long if they are silly enough to let him slip thru their fingers. I think they realize what they have with him, along with the rest of our talented & charismatic cast. Also, look at the devoted and extensive fan base Moonlight captured right out of the gate. We work hard for our show. It more than deserves to get that second season!

Moonlight… good actors, but during the writers strike it turned into Angel… I am just waiting for the boys from supernatural to visit so we can get the demons in there too. Though I enjoy both, they are a little more predictable than i Like. Life was coming on as a real winner, I really like something that makes me think. and then I fell onto Jericho, wow, this is the writing you barely see in the movies. CBS has every right to do want it wants, it does own its company. But when you should at least represent some responsibility to your viewers. They can say we gave it a shot, a second chance. ratings continued to fall. Well, did the run about and change all the nielson families? or are they expecting a new reaction from an old dog? I have a pitbull that no matter how many times you scold him, he still licks you in the mouth. nastee beast. I have just seen too many New viewers join the family that loves Jericho to believe that less people are actually watching the show. myself, only joining 3 weeks ago, have already gotten season 1 and did a marathon, rewatching a few on sci fi since… its got what i want. Thought provoking. Exciting. Even emotional (and i am a hard man i tell ya)
Somebody is dropping the ball here… I am sure the 911 commision should look into it as soon as they get finished with that building thing.
well, CBS, you look good in that new emperors suit there…

Love Cane— Please dont cancel. My only excitement for Tuesday nites after putting the kiddies to bed! I gotta know who shot Joe Samuel. Plus I love seeing the live music at the club.

  58. Hoverbored says:

Haven’t seen Moonlight, and just a LITTLE of early episodes of Cane… not impressed enough to stick with it. But in some ways, Jericho is everybody’s worst nightmare. It happens “where we live”. The show dealt provocitively with an almost unthinkable scenario, it exalted family and comunity, AND IT HAS BEEN REMARKABLY CLEAN!! The way CBS has treated it like a wicked step child, stop/start/stop… – who wants to get involved in that? I just saw on IMDB, there are just 29 total episodes spread across just short of 2 years. Even by today’s standards, that is bad. I went looking for hour long shows from decades ago, and there were close to 25 per year [Sept to May]. Yeah, I was an ST Enterprise fan, too. Makes ya wanna swear off television for good…

  59. MATTI64@CHARTER.NET says:

    BRING BACK CANE

  60. Ralph says:

My best friend and I are absolutely devastated that Jericho is once again on the bubble. We are die hard fans, as are several other friends. Jericho is the one show on CBS that has us all talking. It is our water cooler show. I recently received one of those “get to know me” chain emails from a bunch of friends and everyone had listed Jericho as one of their faorite shows. The audience is bigger than CBS thinks and we are die hards.

  61. Sadly, Ralph, Jericho is no longer on the bubble — at least not at CBS, where, the bubble has burst.

  62. Marianne says:

I will not watch that Angel rip-off tripe called Moonlight. They should cancel it! I didn’t like Cane either. I don’t know what it is but Jericho was the only show on CBS that I liked. Stinks they canceled it again.

I honestly thought the Tiffany network was finally coming out of the stone age but apparently not. Oh well, over to FOX & NBC I go.

  63. Tammy Magyariccs says:

Hopefully they will renew Moonlight,The acting and writing in this show is amazing,And with all the reality show’s on television now, coming home after a week of said reality ,It’s wonderful to escape for one hour and just enjoy a great show and get lost in it.

  64. cobby says:

Moonlight should be renewed. It’s wonderful and magical. It is not a rip-off of Angel..Angel looked like it was filmed in someone’s basement by amateurs, and the stories are not the same. Did you ever hear of Tunnelvision!! Expand your mind you’ll see the world in a whole different way.

  65. Leonora says:

Cane should be renewed. They should start running re-runs at a different time slot. You can’t compare the competition on Tuesday at 10 against any other day and time. B legal and SUV are very strong competitors. Cane will do very well @ any other time or day. Please do not cancel Cane it’s the best show CBS had in a very long time.I also enjoyed seeing Jimmy Smit and Oscar Torre work together awesome couple no other show has this great cast. Please renew Cane

  66. Becky says:

My vote is for Moonlight! Moonlight was selected for 4 more episodes to air in the spring. This is a big milestone and demonstrates CBS likes this show, because after the writer’s strike, the networks were being very selective on the dramas in which they chose to invest the money and time for a few episodes in the spring.

Moonlight has also developed a strong, devoted fan base that keeps growing. The show was consistently winning the demographics for CBS in the 9pm Friday night time slot which is a tough time spot for a show, but Moonlight prevailed and held it’s own. The show has well recognized talented actors, writers, crew and staff that produce a highly entertaining show. It is not just a show about vampires. Moonlight is more a show about relationships and also offers up mystery, humor, drama, noir style filming (with voice overs by Mick St John – absolutely love this part as it reminds me of Magnum PI), detective stories, romance and a touch of fantasy.

Bottom line is I think Moonlight is worthy of a renewal, but it is all about the numbers. Even though Moonlight has not been promoted much by CBS, we, the fans must push to make others aware of this terrific show and keep the viewing numbers up and increasing! We can do it and will!

  67. Holly says:

As much as I wanted to love Cane (good premise, fabulous cast), the writing killed it. It got a good sampling in the beginning, but the ratings kept dropping. The only way it’s coming back is if all the pilots are horrendous or Jimmy Smits has blackmail pictures of Les Moonves.

Moonlight managed to maintain almost all of it’s audience throughout it’s run (gaining some back after an initial drop). If it comes back after the strike with similar numbers, I can see it getting a renewal.

  68. Paul says:

All I can say is, atleast jericho was different from all the other shows on the air today. Do we really need another csi or buffy type show. I think it deserve another chance. People are now just finding out about it. If cbs advertised it like they do csi then they may get the viewers. Maybe try sunday or friday night instead. WE SAY KEEP IT ALIVE!

  69. Lou says:

Cane is a great well writen show Shame on CBS for not sticking with it. This show can become a top ten show if it is placed in a good time slot and pushed by the network. Mash was not a hit right off the bat

  70. HomerJay says:

While now a moot issue, the point that Jericho did poorly against non-original drama competition is true, but doesn’t tell the whole story. During the strike, network viewership as a whole was down. Far fewer people were there to even be on the lookout for “new” shows (not counting the fake reality stuff that sprouted like weeds). Loyal L&O fans tuned in because, as that franchise has shown, a good percentage of its fans will flock to it even in repeats.

Little surprise, also, that Jericho did poorly given the wildly incompatible lead-in from Big Brother. Yes, BB has its fans, but the audiences don’t flow–reality brain candy into thoughtful drama is a train wreck. If anything, Jericho at 8 into Big Brother at 9 would have had a better chance of being a workable combination.

There’s no way to know what would have happened if CBS had truly tried to give Jericho a fighting chance by running it after originals of a winning show–say, CSI (or for that matter, even NCIS), or put it back in the lead-off slot on Wednesday nights.

  71. We hope that CBS WILL renew Numbers, The Unit and Shark – they are our favorite tv shows. These shows, along with NCIS, Without a Trace and the CSI’s, are the only network tv shows we watch. The rest of the time we stay on the History Channel or Discovery Channel.

  72. Ifoma says:

I was a big fan of Cane so I’m a bit sad that it will not be returning.

  73. eydie says:

i have never watched jericho or cane, but i finally know how the fans of arrested development felt, KNOWING a show is awesome and deserves a real shot to grow it’s audience. Moonlight is an awesome show and it doesn’t hurt that alex o’laughlin is so georgeous it hurts to look at him. i really hope CBS will show some good sense and renew this worthy show. LONG LIVE MOONLIGHT!

  74. eydie says:

becky, i totally agree. maybe we should do what jericho fans did (saved the show for awhile anyway) and bombard CBS with… what’s worthy of a vamp? blood(fake, of course)vials or something. LONG LIVE MOONLIGHT!

  75. Catherine says:

CBS hasn’t had anything work in that final Tuesday time slot since “Judging Amy.”

If they want to simply maintain the time slot they should just put in old episodes of “48 Hours” or some known quantity like repeats of their popular shows. The second part of the new “CSI: Miami” did well there.

Putting “Jericho” there was like the kiss of death. Notice that Big Brother isn’t in that slot and actually, if they made it even racier (tackier), it might work better there than during the so called FAMILY HOUR.

  76. Cane is able says:

We love Cane at our house. You have to watch it a few times to get it. We are very much looking forward to its continuation. One of the best on T. V.

  77. Polly says:

Things may be looking up for a Moonlight renewal since CBS just gave the show it’s own message board and a face lift on the show’s home site. Seems like a positive sign to me.

  78. Darrell Iehle says:

PLEASE RENEW CANE. MY WIFE AND I LIKED THE SHOW AND NEVER MISSED A SHOW. I KNOW WE DON’T SEEM NORMAL BUT WE HATE THE REALITY SHOWS.

  79. Heather says:

I love Moonlight and hope CBS renews it for a second season.I tell everyone I know to watch. I know that isn’t much but every person counts.

  80. dee128d says:

MOONLIGHT has an amazing cast. The chemistry between Mick and Beth, and the friendship of Josef and Mick, is touching and real. I almost didn’t watch the first episode because I am not a huge fan of vampires and that gendre, but I am so glad I did. Stylish, well-written and believable. Fine writers. Looking forward to another season. My new favorite show.

  81. Sue says:

I would like to see Moonlight renewed. I didn’t watch until episode 9–I got hooked right away. It makes for a fun Friday night. I would love to see a full second season. I think this cast and crew will get better and better if given the chance.

  82. sandy says:

Moonlight and The Unit are two of my families favorites. It would be a shame for them not to continue. They have a strong following

  83. JUANITA says:

I like cain I hope it will come back.Ilook every week for it to come back.We have to know what happen.
    Juanita Of SUFFOLK VA

  84. Dee says:

CANE!!!!!! It was a great show and had a huge fan base around our area. We taped it, we’ve gone back and watched episodes on the computer. They finally have a great prime time soap going and they take it off. (Its just like the old Dallas and Dynasty days). Everythings about Vampires and Ghosts these days. We needed another drama. Please bring CANE back. So many people would like to see it again.!

  85. Dollie says:

Just found out they hadnt renewed Cane. WHAT???
I’ve been waiting for the new episodes to come back to see what happens. Jimmy Smitts is great and it was an exciting, cant wait til next week, kinda program. I WANT CANE BACK ON!

  86. Chelsea says:

I love Moonlight so much. It needs to be renewed, I’ve never really looked into the other shows that are also on the ‘bubble’ but I think it would be amazing if they all came back so no one would be upset. But to all you moonlight fans out there get as many people to watch the show as possible so the ratings go up.

    May the best show win!

  87. Denise says:

I DVR’ed all CANE episodes to watch, as i did during writers strike. We had a Cane night for 3 nights and watched all episodes aired. Our watchers are in the 35-45 range and really enjoyed
the show, actors and especially the writing. All the actors bring such reality to the show, i feel like i am watching a household filmed from life. I recognize and enjoy each actor from work before this but together they make this show seem effortless yet fantastic. The way the actors portray this family is so believable. Like a big family at a holiday dinner but every day. We all have some sort of jealousy or envy toward a sibling but to a man brought in the family from the outside makes it even more understandable. Having power can be a blessing and a curse but seeing Alex use it to protect his family is again, understandable.
We can only hope this drama is renewed so we can live through this families drama and problems that aren’t so far from reality. SAVE CANE!!!

  88. Katarzyna says:

I hope MOONLIGHT is renewed for another season. It’s really great show!

  89. Nieuws says:

I hope you are right, Moonlight is a great show.

  90. J.J. says:

Moonlight is the best show I have seen in years and I sincerely hope that it gets renewed. It has everything excitement, mystery, action and romance. Where else can you find all of that these days. It would be a real shame if they cancelled it. If they do cancel the show I will stop watching the CBS network / any shows all together.

  91. joshua says:

    i loved jerico

  92. autumngirl73 says:

I love Moonlight and am deeply disappointed to hear it has been canceled. I watch it every Friday. Please bring Moonlight back CBS for a second season.

  93. Christina says:

CBS really gets me mad hell all the networks get me angry it seems like everyshow you like or get into they cancel. Since Angel was cancelled i thought there wasnt gonna be another “vampire” show i could get into then this came about and I was hooked and yet again an awesome show gets cancelled and the sad thing is is that it is probably gonna get replaced by some crappy reality tv show. The writers strike really screwed over a lot of tv shows and this awesome show is one of them. Well I hope that CBS reconsiders and makes a smart move.

  94. mowens says:

I loved Cane and Moonlight. Jerico is too depressing to watch. Out of all three, Cane was my favorite. It is the next Dallas. CBS would be stupid not to revive the series. I love Moonlight alot too, but if I had to chose between the two, it would be Cane.

  95. Mary in VA says:

PLEASE bring back Cane. I LOVE the show and all the cast members.

  96. Laural says:

I enjoy watching all three of those CBS shows; Moonlight, Jericho and Cane. But I only watch them online! Hopefully online viewers are counted, too, when it comes to the ratings.

  97. denicua says:

Please bring back Cane and Moonlight. I never missed a episode.

  98. willy moss says:

I agree with Kecia Blue, Cane was a fantastic show with a great story line. I loved Jericho also. Please bring them both back.

  99. mary says:

    I REALLY LIKE CANE!!!

  100. mary says:

I HATE all the dumb reality shows,,,,,they suck!!!
    CANE was an awsome show,
    BRING IT BACK!!!!

  101. Dave says:

  102. Jan says:

how stupid of CB S to cancel a great show like CANE!!!! I hope they bring it back with all the same characters

  103. KMac says:

Can was great! I will be so upset if it is cancelled!!!

  104. Alex says:

I'm dissapointed with CBS. Bring back “The Unit”, “Moonlight” and “Cane”. Drop “Big Brother” and “Price is Right Primetime”

  105. Diana says:

    I want Cane back

  106. ZCortes says:

I would like to see Cane come back. It was prematurely taken off the air due the writers strike.

  109. itsa says:

since the writers strike i have been waiting to hear something about this particular show,i come to find out the show has been cancelled.I must say how much of a disappointment this is to me.I never missed an episode on Tuesday nights.Everyday of the week i had a certain show i would make time for,and not to miss. Now i can see why i had one favorite show on CBS.I will never watch your station again.I may be only one person with this opinion, and you all could give a damn, but the way i see it is if only one person can make a statement like this then maybe i could make a difference, but like i said i’m only one person.I’ve been watching ABC shows for a long time ,now i know why.

  110. Saige says:

Cane really needs to come back for a new season…..I absolutely loved the show!!!
