Nielsen Ratings – Mar 30: CBS and ABC Split Sunday

Posted on 31 March 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard for Sun. March 30, 2008 CBS ABC NBC FOX CW
Total Viewers (million) 10.41 10.01 5.81 5.31 1.43
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.0/8 3.5/9 1.4/4 2.5/7 0.6/2

The last Sunday of March 2008 is in the books with CBS eking out a victory in total viewers, but conceding dominance in the 18-49 demographic to rival ABC.

I was surprised to learn that the NCAA coverage wasn’t going to be in primetime. It would seem CBS believes that the world will fall apart if 60 Minutes doesn’t air on a Sunday night and just isn’t willing to risk it. Had they run basketball, it surely would’ve been CBS’ best showing in primetime with it this year. America LOVES an underdog, but sadly that love didn’t spell a victory for Davidson. It did however spell 17.2 million viewers and a 5.4/16 from 7pm-7:30pm for just the overrun and post game coverage.

60 Minutes had a good showing for these days, but ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition had a few more viewers overall and many, many more viewers in the 18-49 demographic. Not even Oprah could hang with Extreme Makeover, though she did pull in over 11 million viewers and had a 3.9/9 in the demo. Oprah’s Big Give was a demo workhorse compared to 60 Minutes (3.1/8 in the demo), but Extreme Makeover: Home Edition pulled a 4.5/11 in the demo.

Let the smack talking begin: NBC ran a special one hour Countdown with Keith Olbermann and it pulled Quarterlife style numbers (3.37 million) and did even worse in the demo with a 0.5/2. I’d blame that on the basketball overrun except that a rerun of King of the Hill on Fox did about three times as well as KO in the demo. Even a rerun of America’s Next Top Model on the CW had a better 18-49 result than Olbermann. We know from our regular coverage that almost all of Olbermann’s (and O’Reilly’s too) viewers are over the age of 55 on cable, and it would seem NBC was doing their own little Katie Couric experiment to see if it could capture the youth using Keith Olbermann. The verdict is in: nope.

Dateline at 8pm pretty much doubled Countdown in viewers and tripled it in the demo. It will be interesting to see if they try this experiment again, or whether it’s “You: Stay on MSNBC, thanks!”

Probably better than being shipped off to Bravo like Quarterlife was.

Finally, I’ve seen this enough now to call it: Bart Simpson, your best days are way behind you. Once again a repeat of Family Guy pulled better numbers than a new episode of The Simpsons. Bart still pulled a 3.4/9 in the demo, but he’s no Stewie – the Family Guy rerun pulled a 3.6/8. Unhitched with a lowly 4.19 million viewers for its season finale will likely not be back on FOX ever again.

OMG!!! Did you just predict “The Simpsons” would be cancelled? How could you? That is serious BULL… Look it was Spring Break 2008 Party this weekend, so just chill before writing obituaries, because Simpson fans were passed out on Sun.

P.S. Unhitched should totally be kicked off the air, but Fox will probably put it on Fridays, just to see if the show could get any worse ratings.

  7. Bill Gorman says:

Jenny, Last nights Unhitched was the last new episode this season. Inquiring minds wonder if it will be the last episode ever.

It had averaged 5.179m viewers and 3.283m in 18-49, for Fox that’s in “renew” territory. At 4.19m viewers [although we don't have the 18-49 from last night], I think it’s in the “goodbye” category.

  9. I did not predict The Simpsons would be cancelled, only that its best days are behind it. Next year will be its 20th season. After that, who knows?

How long will it take MSNBC to realize that Keith Olbermann just isn’t a likeable guy? I used to be a fan, but you’re just not as fun as you used to be. Who wants to watch an old guy rant and offer no solutions? I get that from my grandparents. Lockup-Inside America’s Prisons is less depressing. p.s. you’re not funny. Serious, who writes your jokes? Fire them. If you write your own material, stop. Not kidding. I’m actually embarrassed for you most of the time.
    Signed,
    Disillusioned.

We need Keith to counter fox news and Mr. oreilly. At least an angry voice is better than none. I know we’re all embarrassed when Keith tries the humor, but if not KO, who? Isn’t there one decent progressive voice out in TV land that doesn’t present the foam-at-the-mouth lunatic left? Alan Combs (fox news) is our most stable voice, but he’s over shadowed by Hannity. Isn’t there someone out there I can be proud of who shares my opinion and can voice our progressive voice without getting hysterical? We need a hero who doesn’t resort to name calling the first time someone disagrees with them. We need a hero to voice our opposition articulately and offer solutions. They need to know how government works. Have some knowledge of the military (or know someone who does). Have some experience in running a business and meeting a payroll. An education in history will give you context to American policy and world events. Offering solutions is our biggest weakness. I hear a lot of bitchin’, but don’t hear the answers. Why? Because we put up bit players. KO is a bit player. WE need a hero.

Keith is only a counter to Fox in his own mind. Like Oreilly or not he will have people with other opinions on his show. Keith is a coward, and he will never have a guest whose opinion differs. If he had a hair on his ***, he would invite his “Worst Person” on the show the following night. The man is a coward.

The Simpsons this season has been funny exactly one episode. Pretty sad.

Olbermann was interesting about 2 years ago when his program actually stuck to his premise. Now it’s just the rantings of a nerdy looking old man obviously pandering to the fringe elements of the far left.

When will NBS stop trying to shove Obermann down our throats! We see him on his MSNBC show, all their special shows like debate coverage and such, we see him on NFL games, now we see his show on NBC.
Give it up. We’re tired of looking at him already. We get it. He hates Bill O’Reilly and George Bush. It’s over!

I would like it if NBC would warn its viewers if they ever decide to show Obermann on regular tv again. I don’t like the feeling of vomit coming up my throat.

  25. Tom says:

Olbermann’s abysmal, so-called “ratings” for his NBC appearance (FIFTH place out of FIVE in the critical “money” demo and destroyed by a rerun of King of the Hill and trailing a rerun of America’s Next Top Model ROTFLMAO!) are nothing new. When CNBC ran reruns of Deal or No Deal at 8 p.m., Olbermann’s unwatched freakshow routinely finished FIFTH place out of FIVE shows on Fox News, Headline News, CNN, CNBC and MSDNC. The only people on the planet who notice Olbermann are his useful idiots writing for American newspapers and self-described “news” magazines and their identically like-minded America haters in the general populace, both foreign and domestic.

I never noticed that before, but I guess Tony is right-KO never allows the target of his abuse/ridicule a chance to respond. He always asks questions, but never directly to the intended audience of the question. Why not invite them on the show to reply to your questions, Keith? I’d love to see you attack Limbaugh, Ingram, Coulter, or Dennis Miller straight to their faces, but I guess we never will, huh, dude? Because they got chunks of guys like you in their stool.

I am wondering how KO will spin this.

Maybe: “Countdown Sunday was a tremendous ratings success! We had 3 times the number of total viewers compared to a typical night!! And our average number of viewers for the week for shows in which I starred came close to O’Reilly’s 8pm ET average!!!!”

  33. @DCINK, so being a venture of NBC (owned by GE) and Microsoft, you DON’T think MSNBC is a part of the MEGA CORPORATIONS going for ad dollars?

    That’s nuts.

Atypical of the average KO fan in email above. LOL. My college age daughter thinks Mr. Olbermann is a political light weight and refuses to consider him a source for anything (and she reads the Inquirer!). She thinks John Stewart on the Daily Show is more credible. Ouch.

I was a computer based Nielsen viewer, my whole house was hooked up, every TV, for 2 years and I loved it. I miss being able to “vote” on which TV shows I watched, and it was a blast.

Olbermann has become boring and trite. His whole show is devoted to push questions which are totally pro Obama, with not one word of fairness for Clinton or McCain. After he finishes trashing everybody but Obama, he trashes O’Reiley. BORING.
He used to be OK, but now, he is a turn off. Plus the viewers can’t comment or contact him at all, so he is in this bubble with Mathews, both of them doing who knows what to a photo of Obama.
I finally watched O’Reiley to see what all the fuss was about. He doesn’t even mention KO. So all this is about plugging his books, trashing Clinton and O’Reiley, and promoting himself. He really needs to be fired. He is no longer a journalist, he’s just another hack with a show on TV. By the way, I am 60, I live in the most expensive zip code in Georgia, and i am a white female. When I don’t bother with KO, as I now know, I represent millions. I would rather watch West Wing re-runs than Olbermann.

  43. Sheila Vich says:

Keith has finally given a voice to the MILIONS upon MILLIONS out there who are sick and tired of Fox News reporting their agenda unchallenged. Really, I have never been “polled” by Neilson or anyone else, and I am a faithful Keith (and now Rachel) viewer. How many kids have a landline, and how many young people know anything about Neilson ratings? I think the numbers are skewed in Fox’s direction. Keep it up Keith, I finally feel like my strong feelings about the right wing takeover of government and the media is being voiced. Fox can imbibe hate among us. They can make good hard working citizens like myself feel like and outsider in my own country. It is not right. I am tired of their “real America” BS. I am an American, a real American, a patriotic American. I am appalled at what has happened to my great nation over the last eight years. Keith, you are speaking on behalf of millions upon millions. Thank you. You have no idea how much we thank you.

  44. Pete Jones says:

I watch “O’Reilly Factor” on Fox, every evening, during Commercials I switched to MSNBC, “Countdown”. Keith
Obermann rants and screams with such idiocy and blathering hatred, I thought he would have a heart attack. I could only take it for three nights ..never again.
