Nielsen Ratings Tue, April 1: Hell’s Kitchen Beats Dancing & 10pm Ain’t So Bad

Posted on 02 April 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard for Tue. March 25, 2008 FOX ABC NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 18.87 10.87 10.31 7.40 1.79
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 7.5/19 2.9/7 2.9/7 2.6/7 0.7/2

FOX dominated this night by every metric. Although the Dancing with the Stars results show aired, even that could not save ABC from a last place finish in the 18-49 demo (next to last, if you count the CW).

American Idol continued its broadcast television dominance and led into the season four premiere of Hell’s Kitchen. While HK had roughly 4.5 million fewer viewers than Dancing with the Stars, it easily won the 18-49 in a beatdown. I’d predicted that HK would lose at least half of the AI lead-in (duh), and figured it would squeak out an 18-49 victory, but I was surprised by the margin of victory in the 18-49 demo (5.7/14 for HK vs. a 3.9/9 for DWTS).

I guess the “youthful” demo loves screaming at people and calling them a bleeping donkey more than dancing. I think HK’s numbers may be adjusted down a little bit because at least on my DVR, American Idol ran almost to 9:05pm. While sometimes I wish that HK would actually recruit more people who could actually COOK to its contest, this so far seems like the most incapable cast ever. Ramsay is in rare form though, going as far as to say “Small man’s syndrome down there, huh?” to a contestant who had on a 2′ tall chef’s hat.

Also as predicted by one of our commenters, part two of a two part CSI: Miami on CBS had no difficulty whatsoever finding viewers at 10pm on CBS. It drew 14.29 million and a 4.1/11 in the 18-49 demographic coming out of Big Brother which had but 6.42 million. As I always say, lead-in, is not a very useful metric. It probably does matter coming out of American Idol somewhat, but other than that not so much. Plus, I believe we’ll see at least a little erosion for Hell’s Kitchen in the coming weeks though I expect it will continue to dominate the 18-49 regardless. Remember people (every.single.one.of.us) have remote controls, and we know how to use them.

Anyway, 10pm on Tuesday on CBS can find big numbers, even coming out of Big Brother. Let there be no mystery about it. The NCIS reruns continue to hold their own nicely against Idol, at least in total viewers. And another two hours of The Biggest Loser performed consistently as well, with OK numbers in the 18-49 demo.

An ABC special Live to be 150…Can You Do It? hosted by Barbara Walters finished second in the 10pm hour, but also cleared ten million total viewers.

Wow. CSI increased BB’s audience by over 8 million? I wonder how Secret Talents of the Stars will do next week? They might be better off repeating the monday CSI Miami episode instead. Still cant believe CBS is actually airing that schlock fest. So much for blaming the 10pm time slot for the demise of Jericho. I guess the only thing keeping BB on the air is its low cost. Those goofy slow-mo scenes at the beginning of SCI are goofy but funny. They should try doing one whole episode that way using sub titles instead of voices.

  3. Ah, there you are, sorry for not correctly attributing you as “Guess Who” in the post above. If you like, I will (or I’ll attribute you however you like). You did call the 10pm success for CSI: Miami.

I think BB has THREE things going for it:
    1. low cost
    2. airs three times a week
    3. Julie Chen married to CBS chief Les Moonves

That said, I doubt we’ll ever see BB as anything but a summer show ever again after the “spring run”.

I forgot about Julie and Les. That explains alot. I guess that means when I retire BIG BROTHER 34 will be airing featuring more people nobody really cares about.

  7. for what it’s worth you strike me as too smart to actually wind up having to work another 25 years…unless you want to!

Hey all! I’m just curious about Robert, Bill and all you people, r u tv buffs(like me) or have been or are working in TV industry? and whats ur age?

Well, Im 17, I live in India and keep tabs on american tv and hope to run my own Network soon.

  11. @dearme wow, if I had thought like you when I was 17, who knows what might have happened. I didn’t have a single lick of sense until I was 31 or so, and I’m not sure I have much sense now.

Neither Bill or I has any tv industry background. Bill and I both like TV (I LOVE it) and we both LOVE number crunching, speculating and prognosticating. I’m 45, soon to be 46. Bill is in the same general ballpark but I’ll leave it to him to disclose his age. Both of our backgrounds were in high-tech, though more on the business side than the technology side.

  17. dearme, thanks. While there’s no doubt Bill and I are often wrong (but never in doubt!), we’re both pretty good thinkers. But good thinking doesn’t always = sense, where Bill has MUCH more of it than I.

And despite his being older by a smidge, in a survey 99 out of 100 people would say he looks younger. The only thing preventing the clean sweep is that I’d insist on being one of the 100 people surveyed! ;)

Sorry but I LOVE Big Brother and I think Julie does a fine job as the host.. I do agree that I prefer it in the summer because there is usually so much on during the normal season. But for me, I hate all the “dancing” “cooking” and “nanny” shows. I’m not saying that they aren’t any good. Its personal preference. I dont care for “survivor” nor “amazing race” but again, preference. I would prefer to watch the “human” locked-in-a-house experience. But with the writers strike now possible actors strike, I’m just fine with the houseguests coming back for another season…

It looks like Idol slipped a few million viewers. Not that that matters, considering it still crushes everything, but I seem to recall it was recently up around 28-29 million.

Robert, Bill – I was curious about show placement on FOX. What days does the network consider it’s prime spot? Is it the Monday spot, where 24 used to sit? Or does FOX consider Idol days it’s premier days? I’m just thinking about placement for TSCC next season, where FOX might put it if they’re serious about a fall spot.

  25. Andrea says:

I just saw the new NBC fall season schedule. WTF, “Life” being moved to Fridays at 10pm!

I hope that FOX follows NBC in renewing a low-rated drama. I mean if NBC can renew “Lipstick Jungle” (I wonder how “Journeyman” fans feel about that?), why can’t “New Amsterdam” also be renewed (along with TSCC)?

  31. @Daniel, yep you did think of that before and there is no denying it. I’m not “softening” on CBS so much as like most men, I’m distracted by whatever is in front of me right now. It’s hard to argue that CSI: Miami (and the Monday night lineup too) are good at attracting viewers so if that’s what the data indicate, what can I do? :)

I still believe BB doesn’t belong, and think that CBS moves as lethargically as a snail sometimes, largely because it is so profitable no matter what that it simply does not matter. I don’t think that’s some awful thing, it’s just that my mind is always bent around optimizing as best you can as fast as you can and CBS does not work in that fashion.

That said, a lot of that applies to all networks.

CBS’ bigger challenge, despite whatever spin Moonves and crew want to put on it is attracting more youth, where it is thumped by FOX and ABC. On a season-to-date basis, at least through 3/23, CBS best peformer in the 18-49 demo was Survivor: China (13th place) and Survivor: Micronesia (15th place).

While there is no question CBS can attract viewers, attracting the viewers that advertisers want seems to be in question. Example, NCIS and 60 Minutes are the #12 and the #13 show overall based on HH Rating but are both tied for #64 (again through 3/23) in the 18-49 demo.

  35. Frank, sadly the # of scraping sites, both those that do it in an automated fashion and those who do it manually in an effort to garner “search engine” traffic is more than we can keep up with. We do our best to make sure that none of those links ever show up as “ping back” comments so that nobody clicks them, but beyond that I’m not sure what we can do.

I guess that the timeslot issue of Jericho really doesnt matter. Last night they put up a show that people wanted to watch and they got killer numbers finally winning the 10pm slot.

BigMeanie, yep, I pretty much knew that all along in regards to Jerichos time slot. Even CANE did better than Jericho in that slot. I was a huge Jericho Season 1 fan (loved Gerald McRaney) but Season 2 just fell flat on its face by doing the old Iraq War allegory and stock evil corporations route; and turning way too dark and depressing. Also, they had to use a different batch of writers for Season 2 who clearly didnt watch much of Season 1 resulting in several huge plot holes. Half of its fandom is trying to get the show back by harrassing Nielsen with peanuts. Thats the real sign a series is over for good – when its hard core fans lose their minds.
