Can Comcast Save Jericho?

Posted on 07 April 2008 by Robert Seidman

In a story in Monday’s New York Times by Brian Stelter who also runs the TVDecoder blog, it is suggested that CBS Paramount Television is in discussions with Comcast to save Jericho in a similar fashion as Friday Night Lights was saved by the DirecTV deal.

NBC liked DirecTV versus sticking it on a cable network because it felt that doing so would cannibalize 90% of the viewers who’d watch on NBC. DirecTV with less than 17 million subscribers is available to only about 15% of NBC viewers. As of Q4 2007, I believe Comcast was claiming more than 24 million subscribers between its basic and digital cable services, more subscribers than DirecTV, but not so many more that it should raise red flags around cannibalization.

I’m not sure CBS’ broadcast networks will budge on airing Jerich again, even if it gets a subsidization deal. Still it has to be good news for Jericho fans that such discussions are even being considered.

This is AWESOME news. I know that CBS/Paramount has been in talks w/ several potential homes for this high-quality, thought-provoking program. I only hope that all their efforts, and all the efforts of the millions of Jericho fans, will not be in vain. Thanks for bringing this to light for us. And thank you, CBS/Paramount, for your continued efforts on Jericho’s behalf!

  2. N2N2 says:

What the article actually said was that CBS/Paramount “has had” talks with Comcast. This infers that they did talk, but are not talking now. Can anyone confirm that? Is it a “No Go”?? Or are the still talking?

  3. Sam says:

Thanks for sharing this good news! It’s encouraging that the discussions are happening (thank you, CBS Paramount!). Whether the broadcast part of the deal is with CBS or another network, a third season of Jericho would be more than welcome!

  4. Paul McDonald says:

WOW! Fantastic news. I was getting ready to start a private fundraising drive to save Jericho. If 30% of the loyal viewership donated $1 per episode we could raise 40-50 million and produce it ourselves, then offer to a network free of charge untill it becomes viable on it’s own. Anything for a third season!!

  5. Dave Ellis says:

I’ve also thought this program could actually be produced by the fans, I would GLADLY pay $22 to see another season of Jericho! And I would probably buy the DVD of the season like I did the first and will the second season. If someone could co ordinate something like this we could indeed make history again! I also love what the fans of Moonlight are doing, donating blood for the red cross! There is so much good cross tying promotions that could be done with these shows! PLEASE bring Jericho back! You already have a guaranteed 6 million fan base!

Are we going to have to change the name of this website to “All Jericho All the Time By the Numbers”?

  7. Amber says:

Yay! We could always use more good news and this sounds promising! =)

  8. Bill Gorman says:

    Rob, I LOL’d.

  9. Paul McDonald says:

Dave, if fans get serious about forming a fiancing company, We would just need a donation site (execpting paypal or a similar service) then approach the actual show producers. I think anyone given a cashiers check for millions of dollars would be much more motovated. I used to operate a call center and I am familiar with processing funds. I can tell you it’s not as hard as it sounds.

  10. Giants already down 2-0. Rob, I laughed out loud too. Scratch that. Giants down 2-1. See I’m not allllll Jericho numbers all the time

  11. Matthew says:

I’d really like to see Jericho back but I don’t think we’ll ever see it on CBS again. If they can work out a deal with Comcast I’ll be interested to see where the show airs.

Hey Robert, are you still going to mow Nancy’s lawn and wash her car if Jericho returns somewhere? And before you say chances are slim to none, remember hope springs eternal.

  14. Andy says:

  21. Paul McDonald says:

Does anyone have the information on how to contact the creators/producers of Jericho. I would love to give them a detailed plan on my Idea of Fan based finacing. (without looking like a freak) please let me know if you can and I’ll give you my private email address so their info stays private.

    Thanks,
    Paul

  22. TinaV says:

This is an interesting concept. However, I am concerned about the time span between the show airing on satellite and on network. Four months is an awfully long time for those of us that don’t have satellite to wait. I love the show, and I don’t want to have to wait that long to be able to see a new epidsode.

I realize it’s a ploy for people to subscribe to their satellite service, but I for one don’t really want satellite service. I’m happy with my cable and I prefer to be able to watch my local news channels for weather and such.

  23. Andy says:

    Tina,

Comcast is cable. I am not sure how long you have to wait. I actually have Satellite and would have to wait, so I would moooch off a friend :)

  24. martin says:

Oh, this sounds good! I’ll take my Jericho where ever I can get it!!! Looks like I might have to sign up with Comcast…

  25. Stefan says:

I really hope that Comcast will go in and help with the budget because i really like to see a third season. Can’t belive they cancel a show like this with all that other, pardon the language, crap that are shown on TV.

  26. Viktor Lundgren says:

    Best TV show ever! /Swe
