We’re pretty sure the viewers will come back next Sunday for the return of Desperate Housewives, but yesterday’s Sunday was something of a wasteland for the broadcast nets. CBS won the “most-watched” contest, but came in third place in the 18-49 demographic. ABC came in second in terms of most viewers, but first in the age demographic. FOX was in last place (next to last if you count the CW) overall, but third in the demo. And NBC had an awful network television debut with Monk and Psych from the USA network and finished last in the 18-49 demo (unless you count the CW, which more and more it looks like you shouldn’t!).
The most watched program of the entire evening was a new episode of Cold Case on CBS, but the best rated programs in the 18-49 demographic were a tie between Oprah’s Big Give and Here Comes the Newlyweds (at 10pm no less) with a 3.2, and repeats of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and a repeat of the Family Guy parody of Star Wars each coming in with a 3.1 in the demo.
While Monk was able to clear the 5 million viewer mark (5.65 million) it could only get a 1.4/4 in the 18-49 demo. Things were worse for Monk’s USA network mate, Psych, which could pull in but 4.02 million and a 1.3/3 in the demo. I watched the gold tournament on NBC earlier in the afternoon and they were plugging Monk and Psych like crazy, but I suppose that was the wrong crowd to promote with. Psych, performed better than Quarterlife, but not so much so that the network wonks at NBC probably aren’t a little disturbed.
Credit to Extreme Makeover, Family Guy and to a lesser extent The Simpsons, which even in repeats performed well in the 18-49 demographic. Soon we will see just what, if anything, the 18-49 demographic means to ABC. Some are writing that last night’s season finale of Here Comes the Newlyweds may be the series finale, but with a very healthy (these days) 3.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic, ABC will have to at least think about bringing it back.
Friday Night Lights fans – our online friend Brian Stelter, who runs the TV Decoder blog on the New York Times web site got a nice byline in the New York Times (the actual paper, not the blog) today with this story on how DirecTV will subsidize the continuation of the show. The article mentions that CBS Paramount Network television is in talks with Comcast about a similar deal for saving Jericho!

Psych almost does that good on Fridays on the USA network. It is hard for anything on NBC to take off since the rating stink across the board. Pysch has its niche in cable. I would have liked them to put Burn Notice on there. Hot chicks and spies stories might be able to get people to watch NBC again.

that or another 8 hours of the Today Show
I’m off to the ballpark for opening day here in San Francisco. They have good wifi at the ballpark so I may chime in, but if anyone sees the BSG numbers for the season premiere last Friday, please post a comment with a link. Thanks!

I agree with my namesake above. Burn Notice would have been the better choice. The thing is though, you could take the 4 million viewers Psych got and ask if they are new viewers. I know I didn’t tune in because I already watched Psych earlier this year and I also didn’t tune in because I know the show is safe from cancellation on USA. It’ll be interesting to see if Psych and Monk’s numbers grow in the summer.

Media Life Magazine reported that Dexter got a 2.1 in the demo last night, but you and Marc Berman say it’s 1.9. Who is correct? Do you get your numbers from Berman?

Ike, we get our Overnight numbers from Berman when available, as I believe they were last night.
When not available we sometimes get them from alternate sources.

Berman’s fast afilliate ratings(which I typically use) are earlier than MLM or Zap2it numbers. He could report the updated HH ratings when he later posts the viewers but he does not. Since I don’t personally care about overnight HH rating at all (I’m a total viewers guy) we are just providing the early HH ratings as a service. Both MLM and Zap2it provide slightly updated numbers for the overnights but since they only track hours and not the periods Berman uses for viewers I don’t use those numbers.

Neilson ratings are bogus. The Neilson organization is owned and operated by the CIA .Fake numbers justify the airing of propaganda vehicles designed to prop up the agenda of the global elite.

Totally off topic but if CBS brought back Jericho…again….after I deleted all the stuff I recorded because it got cancelled….again. I will be forced to shoot someone.
Granted this season at least had some closure to it so I should have watched the finale but i’m tired of my shows getting canned,n this case twice! Third times a charm?
