Nielsen Ratings Tue, April 15: American Idol Wins / Kristy Lee Cook Must Lose!

Posted on 16 April 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard for Tue. April 15, 2008 FOX NBC ABC CBS CW
Total Viewers (million) 17.02 11.91 9.36 8.82 1.54
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 6.7/17 4.5/12 2.3/6 2.3/6 0.6/2

It was Tuesday which means American Idol and another wide margin of victory for FOX, though the margin isn’t quite what it used to be, it’s still fairly wide. The bigger story may be second place NBC strutting around like a peacock. It has that right – it finished second overall and second in the 18-49 demo on the heels of two hours worth of The Biggest Loser and a new Law & Order: SVU.

I’m kind of cranky this morning so if you want to skip directly ahead to the show data, I won’t hold it against you.

Considering Loser ran up against Idol part-way, those numbers are most impressive. Also, in its final half hour Loser beat out FOX’s Hell’s Kitchen in the 18-49 demo and had more total viewers too. NBC is also able to do something CBS can’t do (unless it decides to move CSI: Miami to Tuesday’s at 10p!) put up great 10pm numbers. An original Law & Order: SVU had over 13 million viewers and a 4.7 rating/share in the 18-49 demo. It beatdown one of my favorites Boston Legal across the board. Denny Crane! Ouch, your ratings suck! (compared to SVU). BL got 9.29 million viewers (likely to be adjusted down just a tad in the finals) and a 2.2/6 in the 18-49 demo. SVU beat Boston Legal in the demo by 100%. That’s a 100% beatdown.

Over on CBS they did just swell with a new NCIS, but then it was Big Brother and a 48 Hours Mystery replacing the debacle that was Secret Talents of the Stars, but weighing down the tiffany crew nonetheless. Mystery only pulled in about half a million more viewers than Secret Talents. Jericho fans are about to be enraged that what you have replaced it with does even worse than it did! I understand Secret Talents and 48 Hours Mystery cost way less to make, but it’s still, coupled with Big Brother pitiful.

I know I’m supposed to blame Nina Tassler, and not my boy Les Moonves but here’s the deal: I know Moonves is Making $37 million dollars a year. If Tassler is making 10% of that I’ll be surprised, and even if she’s making 20% of it, one thing you can bet on: I’m always going to blame the person making the most ( $37 million) money.

ABC’s best show of course was the Dancing with the Stars results show. It drew 15 million viewers and a 3.4/8 as the botox tragedy that is Priscilla Presley apparently got the boot. I sure hope ABC is making a real mint on According to Jim in DVD and syndication, because here’s a certainty: they’re wasting a time-slot with a show that can’t find 4 million viewers. I guess the good news is that relatively speaking repeats do as well as new episodes. One of each ran last night, and the ratings weren’t vastly different.

I didn’t watch Hell’s Kitchen on the DVR yet (it’s on the list), so I’ll be turning my eyes away from any spoilers. As for American Idol, Kristy Lee Cook must go! I have no idea really, never watch it, but my own American idol Tony Kornheiser has been calling for her ouster on ESPN’s Pardon the Interruption pretty much since the start of the season. Call me crazy, but someday I want to see a Hell’s Kitchen season made up completely of Idol contestants who didn’t win.

  1. Guess Who says:

48 Hours Mystery got 900,000 fewer viewers than the Jericho series finale but thats not really saying much as its just a 2 week fill in. 48 has been on for 20 years (under various names) Im suprised its still around – back to Saturday nights! Wonder how SHARK will do in that 10pm time slot as that one is one the chopping block too. CBS would probably do better airing CSI reruns in that slot as reruns cost nothing to make and would probably get 7-8 million viewers.

  3. Joe Black says:

For next season of HELLS KITCHEN they should redesign the set to resemble HELL – with fire, brimstone, smoke and hot women in red skin tight devil suits carrying pitchforks (like the woman in Bananarama’s VENUS video. They could use the models from DEAL OR NO DEAL. Then when its time for the loser to exit one of the women comes down and pokes them with the pitchfork as they make them walk a plank and fall into a fiery smoking pit. Then Ramsay could quip “Life is Hell!”

  5. I think Shark likely to be in the 6.5-8 million range. The CSI rerun might do more. A repeat of CSI: Miami did over 10 million on Monday night.

I know Monday nights aren’t Tuesday nights and there was nothing as strong as a new SVU episode.. I think they should start considering something else for Monday night’s and moving CSI: Miami to Tuesdays, but I’m sure they don’t care what I think :)

  9. Guess Who says:

CSI anything would do good Tuesdays at 10pm, even reruns. CBS is probably just going to run out the clock with SHARK this year. SHARK has jumped the Shark in any case – its ok but not as good as it was. Maybe if they called it CSI: SHARK, that would help?

Im still wondering how CW is still around – only a couple of its shows get over 2 million viewers. When WB and UPN merged it turned into a real pile of crap. How can it stay ini business. I know junk like Top Model, Pussycat Dolls and the Geek show are cheap, but really!

  11. Karen says:

I don’t blame you. I think Les is probably the main problem also, if in NOTHING else for the fact that Big Brother is on air. At all. In any slot.

I’m not enraged as a Jericho fan, but it does make you say “See.”

I still cannot for the life of me see why anyone likes CSI: Miami, but that’s probably just me. I wonder how it would have done if it had started life in that Tuesday timeslot.

Well its nice to see that Big Brother is still steady.

  15. mpbnice says:

As a Jericho fan, I’m not enraged. I’m sad that the CBS programming dept is so short-sighted and I’m just sorry for any program that has Big Brother for a lead-in.

I don’t see it either Karen. I can’t stand CSI: Miami.

  19. Jake says:

With ratings being on par or worse than jericho, I have always said the time slot isn’t the greatest. I kinda want to say I told you so. Again like others, I am not enraged. it is just people make mistakes, and even though I know it wouldn’t happen, I would like CBS to fess up to it.

  21. Jon V says:

Robert – I do not watch AmId either, and rely on Kornheiser for my updates (guess Wilbon watched last night if he told the truth on PTI). My understanding is that everyone thinks that she should have been gone.

CSI Miami – I wrote a blog a coupla months ago asking CBS to move it to Tuesdays and give us a 3-hour sitcom block so as not to have to cancel the two odd-men-out of their 2-hour block (guess ‘The Captain’ and ‘Christine’ were those). Can’t stand Caruso, and Procter has gotten under my skin as well – but it still rules the ratings roost and CBS could have picked up a coupla time-slot wins by moving it around.

They cancel Jericho and replace with utter crap… the collateral damage is also to the network, whose viewers jump ship because of decisions like this.

  23. Jon V., I’m sure we’ll find out in another couple of hours whether Wilbon was really showing the love for Mariah!

See the comments on Bill’s post at the top of this blog about where the primetime broadcast viewers went. I’m not really worried about Christine or Rules of Engagement (not so sure about captain), I think CBS wants to go more comedy, not less — but perhaps not all on Monday nights. We’ll see.

I don’t think CBS is doing itself any favors with its current Tuesday night lineup, but I think it’s recoverable and I’m not sure there would be any long-lasting impact or damage if they just stuck on shows more people wanted to watch (obviously easier said then done!).

  25. Angie says:

The CW is so pathetic it’s funny. I hate Les Moonves as well, both for the crap he airs on CBS and for what he has allowed the CW to become. What a jackass.

P.S. I laugh every time I think about people trying to get Jericho onto the CW. PEOPLE: CBS owns 50% of the CW and controls 100% of the programming.

I miss Jericho. I won’t forgive CBS for cancelling such a well written show. I haven’t watched a CBS show since the Jericho finale. My house has never been so clean.

  31. Rob says:

Ouch! Boston Legal has a DWTS lead-in, a new episode, and only 2.2 in the 18-49 demo, worse than cheap fluffy little Big Brother on the same night but another network. No wonder this muy-expensive show is on the bubble. The former porn stars in the Big Brother house are free……Candice Bergen, James Spader, and William Shatner don’t come cheap.

According to Jim has a huge fan base of people who still want funny wholesome entertainment. If ABC would stop jerking them around and establish some continuity(they can look that up) with their programming,it might make a difference.
