No Ratings Riches for The Riches, But…

Posted on 16 April 2008 by Robert Seidman

The Riches promotion, as seen on my morning coffeeYet another show I’ve been meaning to get around to watching that I haven’t quite made it to yet. I think I’ll probably wind up watching it in the summer. I’d never really heard of the show as I don’t watch FX much, but FOX owned FX took to marketing the show on coffee jackets. The closest coffee shop to me is about three blocks away and amazingly not a chain — it’s not “corporate coffee” and when I’m feeling lazy, as I have for the last few months, I save the four extra blocks of round trip walking to Starbucks. Since probably the middle of February, every day my coffee jacket has been an advertisment for The Riches, starring Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver.

And every day at least for a second I think briefly “I wonder what the ratings are for I show I’d never have heard of if not for a coffee jacket?” Then of course I forget about it completely, until the next morning.

But now I know what the ratings are like and they are indeed very “coffee jacket-esque”.

Last night’s episode, the fifth of season two pulled in 0.7/1 household rating/share and an 0.4/1 in the 18-49 year old age demographic. Overall, 932,000 people watched that airing. While that’s only about half the number of viewers who watched last week’s Battlestar Galactica, and a little less than half in the age demo, this is a show I would’ve never heard about if not for the coffee jacket! It can’t have one-tenth the Internet buzz that BSG has, and I’m sure its marketing budget is much smaller. In consideration of that, the ratings will not deter me from giving it a look, especially as some of my favorite shows ever, like HBO’s The Wire had miniscule ratings relative to the broadcast networks.

The coffee jacket can be an entirely appropriate marketing strategy.

Love this show. I think it’s the best thing that’s been on tv in years. I wish more people were watching it. I want it to come back for many more seasons.

This really is one of the most intriguing new shows to hit the telly in…well, forever.

It’s a shame to think the show may be losing ratings due to *ahem* sub-standard publicity.

The Riches has such an insanely creative plot in which anything can and will happen. There is literally no other show which can compare, nor has there ever been. In a world inundated with “reality” T.V. this just what everyone needed to give them that thrill, that escapism, that rush that comes with connecting to an impeccable story, be it in a book, or on television.

Each second of every episode takes you careening down a winding path of life, love, death, deciet, marriage & family…and the realization that what the Malloy’s thought was the “American Dream” could very well turn out to be their worst nightmare instead.

So tune in to The Riches everyone. I promise you, just one episode you’ll be hooked. It’s packed with twists and turns, jolts, an loop-de-loops you won’t find anywhere else. The Malloy’s er, The Riches will have you completely lost in their unpredictable journey through life…and always leaving you wanting MORE!

its a kick ass show, and yet i feel last year, (their first season) was better by comparison. they did a fantastic job building up both the suspense of whether or not they would get cuaght and building up the characters themselves. Everyone in the cast is great. From Izzard and Driver on down to the kids and to the veteran supporting actors who turn up here (Gregg Henry, Margo Martindale, even Todd Stashwick does a good job here, even todd stashwick.)

If you have yet to see a single episode of it, I would strongly, strongly recommend renting the first season (which is available on dvd) first. (especially since this 2nd season picks up literally where the first one left off.)

anyways its a good show overall, it zings where you feel it would zag, it has however gotten a little repetitive these last couple of eps, but i’d still want it back on fx for another couple years pronto.

also please if you’re gonna check it out, you gotta start with that first season, you just have to.

You can watch all of the episodes from season 1 and this season’s up through last week at:

I liked the show more than I expected, though this season has been slow and not as good as S1.

Season 2 slow?? Are you kidding? I didn’t think they could top season 1’s roller-coaster ride that the Malloy family took between being at the top of the world then having it all crash down. But they’re sure in deeper now.

This isn’t absolutely the best show I’ve ever seen on TV, but it’s in my top five, and it definitely is like no other show I’ve ever seen.

The Riches is definitely worth your time catching up with last season.

I also find Season 2 just as interesting/exciting as Season 1.

FX would make a HUGE mistake if they did not renew this show for at least, oh, how about 3-5 more years, yes?

“The Riches” is by far the best show on television right now. I don’t know what needs to be done to get more people to watch it. All I know is that if a person watches two espisodes in a row they won’t be able to miss anymore.

If THE RICHES isn’t brought back for a third season that will be a huge mistake by FX. They have a huge hit on their hands if they would just market it correctly. Maybe they should change the night it’s on, because a lot of people are tired at 10 on Mondays. If it was a Wed or Thur night show I think the ratings would nearly double.

Getting people to tune in for the first time is where FX is failing though. I ask people all the time if they watch it and they answer that they’ve never heard of it. It’s not advertised nearly enough or in the correct commercial spots. It needs to be adverstised on FOX during football season, because men will like this show just as much as any woman will.

That’s my 2 cents. I am hoping with all my fingers and toes crossed that THE RICHES is brought back for a third season.
