FOX Renews Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Posted on 21 April 2008 by Robert Seidman

Summer Glau as Cameron on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

UPDATE: It’s Official, She’ll Be Back! Fox confirms renewal of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles for next season with a 13 episode order.

TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello is reporting the “exclusive scoop” that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles will be back. Ausiello offers up absolutely no details at all other than “multiple sources confirm to him exclusively” that it has been renewed.

This is no surprise, especially with Ausiello reporting much earlier that they were already staffing for the show and FOX’s Kevin Reilly confirmed this in a discussion with the Hollywood Reporter earlier this week.

“We’ve already started staffing on ‘Sarah Connor.’ Although it was an unusual season, it will end up finishing by far and away the strongest new drama of the season,” Reilly told The Hollywood Reporter.

Plus the numbers were pretty good. So while we do not know yet:

  1. When it will be on
  2. How many epsisodes there will be Update: 13 episodes ordered.
  3. If Summer Glau’s character “Cameron” got vaporized…we do now know:

She’ll be back. Summer, Sarah, and Thomas Dekker too (and we imagine, Brian Austin Green as well). We always thought the numbers were good enough, especially in light of other new shows from FOX not performing as well. I’m looking forward to more details.

Note: Alert reader Raijin observes in the comments below that in Terminator lore, April 21st is “Judgment Day”.  I doubt it’s a coincidence that FOX passed (positive) judgment on that date!

Amazing! No Summer = No T:SCC. Ergo, she’ll most definitely be back!

It’s not a scoop if Reilly already confirmed this with his “staffing” comment.

But good news. The hot babe on the show, btw, is Lena Headey ;)

  9. @dearme there haven’t been a throng of people calling for Miss Guided’s renewal, but if it happens I’d put her picture up.

@Andrea if you click the “She’ll be back” link above there is some homage to Lena H., and I agree she is a total babe.

I love how Ausiello’s saying FOX declined comment. Their coyness with this show is just annoying as anything.

But there’s enough info from sources floating around out there though that I think this is about as good as it’s going to get until the official line-up is released.

Taking a guess at your three questions, Robert, I’ll say –

    – Mondays 8e/7c as the lead-in for a new drama
    – 22 episodes
    – Summer/Cameron will be all healed in time to go shopping for a prom dress.

I don’t understand the worry over Cameron’s condition.

That looked to be a very ordinary low velocity explosion in the car. Nowhere near enough to damage her hyper-alloy chassis.

A bit of tissue regrowth, which we know is possible in the storyline, and she’s good as new!

  15. Frank my (very, very speculative) theory on FOX’s coyness is this: they’re somehow trying to extort cash from Warner Brothers (US Distributor of Terminator 4 movie) and it’s just “Yeahhh, we’re not sure if we’re going to bring it back” posturing to get Warner Bros to try to encourage FOX more.

  17. FrankJ says:

    Bill, come on…it’s a hyper-alloy combat chassis. And you call yourself a fan… ;-)

Seriously though, I don’t get the worry over her either. You should see the fan boards. You’d have thought they killed her off, or FOX was using this opportunity to get rid of Summer and get another actress. Like the show would have been as popular without her, or renewed!

Robert, I agree. I’m assuming the deal was FOX getting a good price per episode, and Warner Brothers gets good press running up to their movie. There’s even rumor of a plot tie-in. That’s sort of why I suspect SCC is getting a full season too. The movie comes out next year. By the way any news on the DVD release? I’m assuming Warner will want that out as soon as possible so they can make up for the FOX discount early.

About Terminator 4 movie, news has not been good…

“According to latest rumors from Hollywood, production of the latest Terminator film series was stopped, blah blah blah…” Source: http://www.javno.com/en/bestseller/clanak.php?id=141829

How can this developement affect how many episode we are going to get for the next season?

  21. Jim, I don’t trust these kinds of sources generally and I think (not sure) the copyright battle was resolved long ago. Probably typical blogger rumor mongering!

There is a “source” for the rumor though, and I’d say its this one.

I have no idea on its authenticity.

  25. K8ie says:

    WHOO and HOO.

The delay is probably contract-related but it could be FOX being buzz-savvy and keeping the show in the entertainment columns. Uncertainty generates more discussion than certainty: QED the posts on this site.

As for the UGO rumour – The Halcyon Company owns the rights to future Terminator projects outright. They bought out all of Carolco’s remaining rights (including some to TSCC) last May. They seem to be financing T4 with money from private equity (like Legendary Pictures – who cofinanced Superman Returns, among others) and WB is just the NorthAm distributor, so it wouldn’t be WB shutting down the production. The production did cancel plans to shoot in Hungary following the dollar’s dive agains the Euro and relocated to New Mexico, where they were reportedly casting extras last week. For a production to fall apart at that stage, without any of the kind of negative buzz something like Justice League or that Nick Cage Superman got, would be highly unusual.

Very good news indeed but still not official. Oh, we’re not worried about Cameron being hurt but if Summer will be portraying her. Another Terminator got blown up and he repaired himself but came back as another actor, so that’s why the fans are worried.
    Oh, Lena Headey = HOT

    Summer Glau = HOTTER

  35. Bill Gorman says:

FrankJ and Andrea, My guess is that the renewals of a lot of shows from this year are going to be greeted with a certain amount of wariness because of the unique (writer’s strike) situation.

I think the attitude of “Well, it did pretty well in the winter/spring of ‘08 when everything was all screwed up, but how will it do in a normal season?” will often be the case.

Prison Break got 22 episodes with lower numbers… Oh well, I just hope the show does well.

If it were up to me I’d put behind something huge like American Idol and leave it there. ;) All the ratings drama is such a needless heartache.

Although it’s great news the 13 episode order scares me a bit. We only had 9 superb episodes so I was expecting a full second season containing at least 22 episodes. If Prison Break gets 22 we should at least get the same. If TSCC airs in the fall it will go up against Heroes which has basically the same fanbase. When 24 returns in early ‘09 Prison Break will be it’s lead-in instead of TSCC which already was proned to be 24’s lead-in this year.

For those of you curious about Raijin’s trivia about T:TSCC, here is the dialogue from the Pilot.

Sarah Connor: How long have you been looking for us?
    Cameron: Seventy three days.
    Sarah Connor: And the war?
Cameron: The Skynet Missile Defense system goes online April 19th, 2011…declares war on mankind and triggers a nuclear apocalypse two days later.

Somebody at FOX has a really cool sense of humor. ;-)

They might have a sequence with her in full terminator/robot frame for part of the episode because the fire burned off all her skin, but I think they’ll have her back to normal looking girl by halfway through the episode or sooner.
