Many blame lousy Friday and Saturday ratings on fewer viewers being around, which is at least a bit exaggerated. But how do you explain lousy ratings on Sundays, one of the most watched night’s of broadcast television? One word: repeats. ABC won the night (no repeats), followed by CBS (also no repeats), but only ABC and FOX could crack the 18-49 age demographic “Mendoza Line” with a 2.0 rating or better in the age demo. And FOX just barely got there.TV analysis is a wacky business. People comparing last night performance of Desperate Housewives to last years at this time (when it was basically the same). But I’m a what have you done for me lately guy and last night’s performance by the babes on Wisteria Lane will be another record low performance in a year where the show prior to the strike was very strong.
DH is one series where the strike appears to have hurt it and it seems that serialized dramas took a better hit than shows that you can jump in on at any time, like CSI. We’ll see. The Housewives pulled in 15.58 million and a 5.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic and was still the most watched show of the evening, but it was steadily in the 18 millions with even better performance in the demo most of the year.
DH may get a bump when it comes to live plus seven days of DVR viewing but we won’t see that for a few days. While last year’s 4/22 episode had only 15.91 million, it was up against tougher competition on the other networks.
CBS’ line up of 60 Minutes, Big Brother and a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie: Sweet Nothings in My Ear fell well short of averaging 9 million viewers and short of the 2.0 in the age demographic as well. The Tiffany network can’t blame repeats, or fewer viewers on Sunday night, but it perhaps can blame the Pope, whose New York City visit preempted 60 Minutes and at least part of Big Brother with local coverage. Sweet Nothings with just over 8 million viewers underperformed last 4/22/07’s Hallmark presentation which drew 10.66 million.
Over on ABC, the finale of Oprah’s Big Give featuring more Oprah and even Jennifer Aniston barely cracked 10 million viewers and a 3.2/9 (rating/share) in the 18-49 demographic. Not shabby, but these days Oprah is no Gordon Ramsay. Brothers & Sisters was back in the 10pm slot and dominated against the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie and a Law & Order: SVU rerun. Some say that retention out of Desperate Housewives wasn’t spectacular but most shows following hits lose 50% or more of the lead-in, so I call retaining two thirds spectacular. And the 3.6/10 in the 18-49 demo wasn’t shabby at all either.

and last year’s comprable on 4/22/07 did 15.91m, though last night’s may bump up to that range in the final numbers. And DH will get a DVR bump it didn’t get last year…but we won’t see last night’s live+7 data for a couple of weeks.

Big Brother was the only show for CBS to crack the 18-49 demographic, wow. At least the ratings are consistent week to week.

@Josh, good for Big Brother, but scary for CBS!
@Dearme I watched a boatload of basketball and then studied Nielsen numbers until the wee hours

I watched Friday’s Battlestar Galactica on the DVR. Except for Sunday Night Football, there’s nothing I’d watch on Sunday night.

I like Simpsons and Family Guy.
Note to Bill — George Lucas allegedly *loves* Family Guy (and was thrilled with the Star Wars spoof which was approved by Lucasfilms).

How do CW shows like Everyboy Hates Chris stay on the air with a little over 1 million viewers? Apparently everybody DOES hate Chris (ok, maybe not everybody, but 99% of them)
They cancelled Veronica Mars when it had a measly steady 2.5 million viewers.

Oh dear geat, isn´t that series-low for DH? I´m worry about DH ratings, what if the numbers will go down and down? Robert, what do you think, why is DH so strong show in the fall only?

Guess Who, how anything happens these days at the CW is a matter of substantial wonder.
My guess is they look back at Veronica Mars as being part of the “Good Old Days” and long for their return.

I love The Simpsons, infact I’m watching it ryt now and I have never watched Family Guy and I don’t wanna watch that apparent rip-off

Family Guy has kinda stolen Simpsons’ thunder and its really disappointing that people are choosing family guy over this classic.

@Guess Who, they canceled Reba too which was their highest rated comedy if I remember correctly. They could have brought it back for one more season.

The Simpsons usually outdraw FamGuy… last night was nearly a tie and the Simpsons had more competition.
I like both, and gun to my head, I would take TS over FG… but it’s almost the same viewers who watch both (except for Bill, I guess). They are running recent reruns against a lot of new stuff right now.
Fox will come out with new eps as these other shows run out of gas and you’ll see 8mil/view for the Simpsons and 7.5m/v for FamGuy soon.

Jon, you’re incorrect about the Simpsons, especially in the demo where repeats of Family Guy have routinely outperformed NEW espisodes of the Simpsons this year. I’m guessing there is some large crossover with people who watch Family Guy and DH. FG reruns have not performed so well the last two weeks, but prior to that a FG repeat almost beat Oprah’s Big Give in the demo @9pm.
See for yourself and if interested look at a few other Sundays and you’ll see it was by no means a one-time event.

Just to set the record straight, I’ve watched my share of The Simpsons. My god it’s been on for what seems like a generation, how could I have completely avoided it?
On the other hand, I’ve never seen Family Guy.
BTW, 95% of what Robert claims on the site about my TV viewing is fiction. The fun part may be figuring which 5% is true.

“See for yourself” (hoped the link would be in there)…
This was the ‘Star Wars’ parody week… must see TV for all FG fans. Can you go back further, because I thought I remembered comparing the two for my TVBS a while back and thinking that the Sims were the better value?

p.s. – This episode (Blue Harvest) also garnered a lot of one/first-time viewers who may have come back last night to see if they had been missing something these past few years.

Bill – I think what we were saying is that you ARE a Simpsons guy and NOT a FamGuy guy.
This is the 20th year for the Simpsons (if you include the little blurbs on Tracy Ullman).
I think that is what is called ‘a generation’.

Jon V, all the data is available here, browse away in the overnight posts section — it will take a few clicks, but you’ll live
You will see that it was NOT a one time, Star Wars parody event.

I’ll take your word for it…
It must have been a TVBS cost vs. ratings thing that I remembered.

DH has seemed to play out its adultery angle, always a popular subject with female soap opera audiences, since Peyton Place. I doubt they can hold onto Eva Longoria forever, though actresses as ” hot ” as she is have sometimes been held hostage to sitcom purgatory for a while. The next chink in ABC’s armor will appear when Grey’s Anatomy debuts against CSI. Then will come Private Practice. For some reason viewing momentum seems to be against these shows, but only the Friday AM numbers will tell.
