I don’t think you can assume that. The NBA is without a doubt a more popular league than the NHL nationally and thus would clearly get better numbers nationally–especially with a game featuring the league’s biggest star in LeBron James. That doesn’t mean the same held true for the particular market in Washington.

To the gentleman above, the Wizards drew a 2.1 national rating on ESPN for Game 1. So without complete numbers, you can pretty much guarantee that the local ratings (ESPN + Comcast) for the Wiz crushed the Caps.

I don’t have any of the local data for Saturday. We will get the national data at somepoint, but that’s not going to give you what you want.

While I am sure TK is right about recognizing Gilbert on site more easily than Ovechkin, it would be interesting to see the head-to-head comparision. I’ll see if I can dig up something head-to-head.

I’m curious because in D.C. we’re constantly told by certain members of the sports media that no one really cares about hockey, etc. Tony Kornheiser likes to say that no one would recognize Alex Ovechkin if he walked down K Street at lunchtime, but that Gilbert Arenas would be mobbed. But for the Caps to score higher than the Wiz in a head-to-head TV ratings matchup would seem to indicate that times may be changing a little bit in Washington.

Are there any numbers for Saturday afternoon when the two teams also went head to head? (NBC vs. ESPN plus Comcast)
