American Idol ruled again, followed by Dancing with the Stars and the network rankings reflect that. FOX won everything, and mock me if you must for my love of Hell’s Kitchen and Gordon Ramsay but a 5.1 in the 18-49 demo is hard to come by. If you don’t believe me, just look at the data table because Hell’s Kitchen was the only show besides American Idol itself that could pull it off – and that was after it lost more than half of Idol’s lead-in. Lead-in, schmead-in. Bah!
NBC is really missing, and I mean, really missing The Biggest Loser, though fortunately it still had Law & Order: SVU to fall back on.
I can’t really write anything new about According to Jim on ABC. If the DVD and syndication for the show are so lucrative that ABC winds up renewing it, I think it must say a lot about what ABC views as the prospects for broadcast network primetime television. We’ll see.
Fortunately ABC has Dancing with the Stars where the results show pulled in almost 17.5 million viewers. But this is why you have to be impressed with Hell’s Kitchen. With six million fewer viewers overall, HK beat DWTS in the demo by 25%! Boston Legal had one of its better performances lately, though its numbers will likely be adjusted down a little bit in the finals because of DWTS overrun into the 10pm hour.
Ok, I’ll just say it. I miss Jericho. Probably writing about it more than watching it, but either way, I miss it. And while on a cost basis everything CBS has run in the 10pm slot since then is much cheaper other than a special Tuesday at 10pm edition of CSI: Miami. And except for the CSI: Miami, Jericho performed better in the slot. Which I admit isn’t probably saying much, but still. If I were running CBS I’d figure out something new to put on Monday’s at 10pm and end the Tuesday 10pm curse by moving CSI: Miami there.
I can’t really fault CBS for not doing that from the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mindset, but other than the 8pm slot with NCIS, things are pretty broken for CBS on Tuesdays right now.
Though I didn’t see the 18-34 breakout yet, where I’m sure Gossip Girl did better, especially among women, Reaper didn’t do much worse overall, and considering it improved over Beauty and the Geek by more than 800,000 viewers, it deserves some credit. Speaking of Gossip Girl, did you see how thoroughly MTV’s The Hills trounced it on Monday night?

Shark returns next week with new episodes, that will be the real test of the 10pm death slot. Of course from CBS’s perspective rerunning an old episode of Shark that costs nothing to make beats airing a fresh Jericho episode that gets only 1.2 million viewers more. Never like Shark all that much – wont be sorry to see it go if it dies. The ironic thing is Jericho and Shark premiered within 1 day of each other back in Sept. 2006. Theres even an Ebay auction featuring a CBS promo DVD with the pilot episodes of both Jericho and Shark on it. It would be ironic if both shows met their doom in the 10pm “death slot”.
As for moving CSI Miami there – it would definitely break the curse. Maybe if they retooled Jericho calling it CSI: JERICHO and cast David Caruso as a refugee from LA, it would be a hit? There alot of deaths in Jericho he could investigate like the old lady who ran the grocery store and the kid who then killed him. Theres also the dead body of the woman Robert Hawkins killed and buried. His first 3 cases. LOL!

And why, in the name of all thats holy, is According to Jim still around? Does he have some kind of dirt on ABC execs that forces them to keep the show on the air?

Yes, we have all thought of the CSI: Jericho (Jimmy actually made a CSI joke if you recall) angle. Pretty soon, all CBS will be airing is CSI shows, Survivor and Big Brother. I expect that even NCIS will be diving soon (since they are to off another character).

Should we start a countdown for the death of the CW? 1.5 million for a new airing of BATG? Hilarious. Since when do networks’ scripted shows outperform their reality tv? Never! Only on the CW.
Someone fire Dawn Ostroff. Please.

If Shark does die, this should be the series finale.
James Woods jumps a shark tank on a motorcycle, skids to a stop in front of Henry Winkler dressed as Arthur Fonzarelli – the director of the finale – who just says “Ayyyyyyyyy”!! giving him a thumbs up. At which point Woods turns to the camera and says “I guess I finally Jumped The Shark! See you around…” he then speeds off into the distance as the sun sets.

I miss Jericho too.
CW is going to run itself into the ground and I fear they’re going to take Supernatural down in a firely flame with them.

Awww Robert – how nice, you miss Jericho. So do we! Only we miss watching it because we ARE WRITING about it. We are writing and writing by hand, messages to other networks to please give Jericho a new home. So there is hope yet that you will get to write about it too. Perhaps you could write a letter to these networks pleading your case – that being – if network TV continues as it is there will be nothing left that anyone wants to watch and, therefore, will be nothing for you to write about! I would love to one day see an article that states “last night 0.0 millions tuned in to watch nothing.” It’s a dream I have because I can’t bear the thought of the 900 incarnations of “CSI Anywhere” being all there is for me to choose from (Is there really a “choice” in that scenario?) Besides, how many times can one watch that insipid redhead take off his sunglasses and cock his head to the side! I only see it sometimes in the commercials and it annoys me – have never watched the show.

if according to jim comes back and boston legal doesn’t… there’s something seriously bizarre going on over at abc. the way the episode ended… with spader and shatner saying they aren’t done yet and there’s lots more to do followed by a funny plug for their move to wednesday night… i feel a little better that, it was david e kelley’s way of telling fans they will be back

NBC…the execs running that network..like Borat would say…”in my country…thats like having chimpanzee’s flying jet planes”…can u imagine Wednesday night from 8 to 10 pm they programmed “Most Outragous Moments” and “Saturday Night Live Re-runs”…and they charge advertisers for this?..how they keep their jobs is beyond me…and the solid 1.3 and 1.6 demo numbers..i say give them all a raise..look these are people who eat veggie, workout daily, subscribe to new age philosophies…so of course they’re in touch with the average americans tastes..and needs…those tv execs have their fingers on the pulse..speaking of pulse…someone should check marc “verman” berman’s..the self proclaimed “programming bystander” looks like in 6 months he’ll be dead a year.

CSI Miami and that shark SUCKS! Last night I was using my computer with the tv on in the background, for the first 15 minutes while my back was turned to the tv and I was just listening to the tv sort of while I used my computer and I thought it was “CSI Miami” that was on when I hit the menu button and saw it was “SHARK” How can anybody tell the difference between the two shows? They all talk the same and there is nothing to look fwd to ever in those stupid shows….really, just bring “JERICHO” back. Who cares if it had low ratings, where’s your common sense CBS?

Thanks for the Jericho mention!!! But as a CSI:Miami watcher if CBS moves it to Jericho’s timeslot I refuse to watch. As a matter of fact since Jericho was cancelled I have pretty much stopped watching tv altogether and I now watch Jericho online, on dvd, or on itunes. It was really the only thing worth watching on tv to begin with. The rest of the things I used to watch were just background noise while I surf the net or do other things.

Didn’t the CW take Gossip Girl episodes off line? What the hay is going on over there?
Although I am rooting for the network to keep on, simply because I love me some Supernatural and Reaper.
And thanks for the shout out to Jericho, we miss it too (but for different reasons, I suppose).

You are so kind to be missing Jericho with all of us.
Let’s just keep hoping and pushing for Comcast to do this deal with CBS Paramount. I really think Comcast would be pleased with the acquisition of Jericho and it fan community.
Watching Jericho on Fancast (owned by Comcast) is a way to keep Jericho noticed.

Ravewood sez “They all talk the same and there is nothing to look fwd to ever in those stupid shows….really, just bring “JERICHO” back. Who cares if it had low ratings, where’s your common sense CBS?”
Who cares if it had low ratings? Um, just a wild guess, maybe the SHAREHOLDERS of CBS stock, the employees and most importantly ADVERTISERS who paid for the show and got 1/4 fewer viewers than they paid for. Its amazing how so many fans of failed shows expect the network to keep THEIR show on the air. Do they think money grows on trees?
Its clear that the remaining Jericho fan base consists largely of people who lost all touch with reality. Its a shame. There is one guy on the CBS message board for Jericho proudly boasting how he spend over $1,000 sending nuts to places like Variety magazine and Nielsen. Unreal.

We miss Jericho too. Thanks for the mention of Jericho in CBS’s “cursed” timeslot. We fans know it’s not the fabulous show that returned bad numbers, it’s the curse.
Check out the SciFi Channel forums for spirited discussion of ways to bring back Jericho. We’re still fighting the fight.

@ GuessWho:
Well, it’s not so unreal when a group brings back a show from death. We made TV History in the process, and are poised to do it again.
At some point, people have to let the networks know what we want, but unfortunately the only way we can do it to to scream really LOUDLY. It’s like they’re deaf to what viewers actually want. If we didn’t, you’d have a steady diet of American Idol, The Bachelor, and Dancing with the Stars. Sound good to you? It does to the networks, because it’s relatively cheap to produce. But it sux by any societal measure. It’s not even entertainment – it’s cultural degradation.
We live in a new era of broadcasting – an era of narrowcasting. It started when cable TV came online. Look at it this way:
3 million viewers for a cable show is a blockbuster. 3 million viewers for a network show will get it cancelled.
However, when surfing the TV, the networks are simply one more choice – nothing special over HGTV or even the vile MTV – unless they have something on that’s special.
Yeah, I’m gonna tune in the networks for Reality Du Jour or something that show kids doing things that should get them arrested. Right.
Give me riveting, uplifting shows like Jericho any day.

Guesswho, the deal is, most of us who love Jericho don’t watch much else. So it’s a drop in the bucket, so what? That’s our eyes the advertisers are missing. In a round about way, the advertisers are missing a chunk of people because there are a whole lot more out there who don’t watch anything because they are tired of the claptrap being presented. It doesn’t mean one doesn’t have a life, it means there is a need for that type of quality entertainment that is also very thought provoking. If you don’t find it though provoking, then maybe it isn’t your cup of tea, so go watch CSI: Podunk or AI, but IMO there should be room for all types of pie, not just one. Are there some that go overboard, maybe, but there are also people that spend 1000$ on Wii games, or gambling or whatever their “thing” is. The industry is in need of a change, but it is in inertia mode (except the part that is in “chicken with head cut off freaking out mode” who desperately put up and take down stuff in a knee jerk reaction trying to capture AI numbers). We are just trying to kick it in the pants.

Karen,
Whatever. The fact is Jericho is just too expensive with too small of a fan base. I supported fighting for Season 2 and sent in $100 worth nuts to CBS, but this time its over. Jericho had 2 years to prove itself and the result was a 50% decline in viewers. Season 2 lost alot of Season 1 fans because of its heavy handed political commentary that sort of ruined it for me and many people I knlow – I kept watching Jericho the whole time but others stopped after Season 2 episode 1 or 2. Jericho simply is not as popular as people make it out to be. The sooner people adjust to that fact the better off they will be. There are remnants of the Save Invasion (pretty good show) movement still moving zombie-like thru halls of cyberspace – that unfortunately is Jericho fandoms future.
For the record, I dont like CSI, Law & Order or American Idol or much else except LOST and 24 and maybe The Office and Sarah Conner Chronicles.

Gues Who, you are entitled to your opinion, sames goes for the dedicated JERICHO fans. What’s it to you if people are willing to fight for a quality tv show that is thought provoking, that brings some families together to watch and discuss events that could relate to real life? I for one what more JERICHO.

Wow! There are quite a few impassioned Jericho fans out there and I’m glad to say that I’m one of them. Why not fight for something so special? Why should we sit back and just “adjust to the fact” that Jericho is over? Jericho IS as popular as people make it out to be, just ask any of us.
