American Idol was on, so it’s automatic that FOX won the night. But Idol isn’t what it used to be, not even compared to last year. While I don’t think there’s really huge cause for concern yet (and comparing to last year’s comparable episode isn’t fair since last year’s April 25 airing was 2 hours), we do wonder whether Idol will ever see 30 million viewers again.
With less than 23 million viewers tuning in last night to see Carly Smithson get the boot, I’m beginning to think clearing 30 million even with the finale next month will be a significant challenge for the show.
Some people wonder why on earth anyone still watches NBC’s Deal or No Deal. It’s not for me, but just seeing Howie Mandel makes me want to turn the channel. Still, over 10 million were watching DOND from 8p-9p to see if anyone will ever win this game.
And in fairness to my bald brother Mandel, it holds up OK even up against Idol. Yet during the 9pm hour it was beaten by a repeat of Criminal Minds. If you can hold up fairly well against Idol with a repeat, that’s pretty good even if 75% of the viewers were 70 years old and the advertisers don’t really care about them. No matter, Criminal Minds in repeats surely makes more money than Gossip Girl in original airings.
Females between 12 and 34 may be a lucrative target market, but if you can go old early and often enough you’ll still make more money selling Depends and reverse mortgages.
FOX’s comedy block is starting to show signs of life, particularly Back to You at 8:30p which had over 7 million viewers and a 2.7/7 in the 18-49 demo, the best demo performance on broadcast television in the 8p-9p hour last night.
I have to blow some kisses at Tyra Banks. I know I suggested that CW would do way better with that show if Giselle Bundchen was hosting instead of Tyra, but America’s Next Top Model cleared over 4 million viewers last night and hit a 2.0/6 in the 18-49 demo. I can’t remember the last time a CW show hit the 2.0 mark in the demo. Way to go Ms. Banks!
At 10pm 12.63 million tuned in to bid adieu to Detective Ed Green (Jesse L. Martin) on Law & Order. Martin had been on the show for nine seasons. The show pulled a 3.7/10 in the 18-49 demo. ABC’s Men In Trees was back from “hiatus”, but given the numbers it looks like this tree should soon be chopped down. See for yourself.

Oooh, snarky today. I think they keep the depends and mortgage ads for the daytime and push the Viagra and other pills at night. And just what demo do you fall into again?

In less than four years and three months I will begin crying about the injustice of the 18-49 demo, but for now, I am still in the demo…
I don’t watch too much CBS during primetime, and given the DVR, it’s fairly rare that I take in very many commercials outside of watching sports live.

Wow I think that is the highest rated Wednesday episode yet. Go Big Brother.

Cheers to NBC..last nights Law & Order…a 3.7 demo with 12.63 million viewers…now if only their feeble development department could find a new scripted drama to perform as well…
on another note…Seidman by the glare of sunlight coming off your bald head i figured your “18-49 expiration date” had passed you by years ago…but you still look youthful compared to that “TV Imposter” Marc “Verman” Berman with his greyish ghoul-like coloring and bloated body type.

I laugh at the demo. I watch Boston Legal and Spongebob. What does that do to the demo?

it likely has no impact on the demo. As for the impact on you I can’t really opine though I am curious to know whether SpongeBob is more like Denny or Allan.

Bill, in Nielsen’s America the Demo laughs at you!

I rarely comment on the contents of a show, but I’m a huge L&O fan, and I’m surprised they showed Jesse the door with 4 episodes left in the season.
Perhaps, it’s to give time to break in the new detective.

Bring back MAX HEADROOM !! No idea why that series just popped into my head just now, but it did. I guess its all part of the lattice of coincidence. LOL!

Just watched last night’s L&O… wow.
I have seen every ep of every L&O ever and the ‘mother show’ seemed to be going down hill recently. But this was one of the best episodes in years.
Sorry to see Jesse go (but he’s got two projects including a bio where he plays Marvin Gaye – what a career move)… and he went out with style and grace.
Anthony Anderson (I loved him in Me, Myself and Irene as one of Jim Carrey’s ‘kids’) takes over and he did a real good job as the IAB detective that helped Lupo break the case last night. I guess they’re going to team up now.
Good numbers for L&O last night, but I wanted to see 15mil/v and a 10HH (yah… I TVBS bought it for this week – what did you think?)

I got distracted from reading by the Clay Aiken ad on the side of the screen. I used to like him back in his Idol days, but now he just makes me think of a light haired KD Lang.

I forgot back to you again, i need to set an alarm clock honestly. So at it’s rate of decline I can count on Idol being canceled in 6 or 7 years? I pray for that day, I beg for it!.
And don’t knock Howie!! On a side note, I count going home with 200k a win, I dunno what kinda money you make

Men in Trees is actually about to go on hiatus, so it can make room for Boston Legal, which is moving to Wednesdays, so it can make room for Women’s Murder Club, which is making its post-strike return on Tuesdays, all beginning next week. Trees has three episodes remaining and is scheduled to resume on May 28th.

Good to see “Back To You” coming around finally…funny show.

Back to You has really hit its strive. The two leads are very strong and have great chemistry. Very good and funny show. I’m glad it’s doing better in the ratings and I hope it improves even more in the next weeks.
