The Phoenix Suns Dash NBA Execs Dream of Shaq vs. Kobe Playoff Round

Posted on 25 April 2008 by Robert Seidman

I know NBA playoff ratings have made double digit gains vs. last year.  I’ve been writing for months that the NBA is exciting again, and it largely is.  Except for Phoenix Suns vs. San Antonio Spurs.  As I write this, the Suns are down 19 points at home early in the fourth quarter of game 3.  I was out watching the game and it was such a disappointment that only drinking myself into oblivion would have made it entertaining and that didn’t seem like a great idea.

That said, I’m not surprised.  When I caught Steve Nash on Thursday’s PTI “Five Good Minutes” (clip below) I thought, “Oh man, this is over by game 5 and perhaps the Spurs sweep in four!”  I’m sure the Spurs watched it and thought the exact same thing.

For those of you who are anti-video, the salient points Nash made to me were:

  1. Losing game one was like a kick in the groin
  2. Losing game two was more like a punch in the mouth
  3. And he said  something like ”I don’t think losing to the reigning NBA champs means we made a bad choice acquiring Shaquille” what seemed like about 10 times

Call me a cynic but I believe Mr. Nash thinks they made a bad choice acquiring Shaquille!  Wilbon made a comment about how the Suns, known as the consummate fast-break team felt about being outscored on the break 26-4 in Game 2 .  I don’t remember his answer exactly but his response came out sounding like blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.  His lips may have said “I don’t think we’re out of it,” but his tone and demeanor suggested that he did think they were out of it.

Bad news for the NBA to have Shaq and Steve Nash out of the playoffs early and the Spurs still in there.  Maybe this will be the year the Spurs get their appropriate share of love.  They’re a great team. But in their hearts, the upper management of the NBA would have rather seen the Kobe vs. Shaq playoff round.  That looks very unlikely now.

Although I usually skip the players on 5 Good Minutes, I watched Nash and thought the same thing. He almost looked like he was on anti-depressants, he was so monotone/unenthusiastic.

I think the Suns being bounced in the first round is a negative for the TV ratings, but their potential for getting *past* the second round to the conference finals was very low, so at most the NBA loses out on 4-7 games with them in the mix.

The real ratings nightmare would be if the Lakers or the Celtics got upset before the conference finals. It seems very unlikely, but I bet a few TV folks are kept up at night by the prospect.

Bill, I really don’t think it will be that big of an upset if the Lakers lose before the finals. They would only be slight favorites over the Spurs in the conference finals.

  3. Bill, I agree with you from a prognosticating point of view. But if the Suns vs. Lakers could’ve happened and it was programmed exclusively by ABC in the same fashion as the finals, I believe it would have probably outperformed last years spurs/cavs finals. Real or imagined there’s a real rivalry there (as far as the viewing public is concerned).

A middle of the year Kobe Shaq game on ESPN that had absolutely no significance and was a late game on the east coast did 3.6 million. that’s better than the PLAYOFF games are doing on TNT.

Rob, I agree with you. My earlier point was it would be a ratings disaster if the Laker were upset *before* the *conference* finals [i.e. in the second round].

The Phoenix Suns , as a professional team of NBA, is one of the major teams that has fans all around the world. It is quite normal if Phoenix Suns tickets are so pricy or hard to find because such great teams tickets worth any price. It doesn’t matter if we pay a respected price for Suns tickets because we satisfy our eagerness to watch good games and more than that when we go to watch a game it’s because we love this team and we shouldn’t be mean.
