Well, the first Friday night of May Sweeps (even though it’s still April) was a pretty bad night overall for the broadcast networks. CBS won the night in total viewers and the 18-49 demographic, followed by second place NBC which also was second in the 18-49 demo. ABC was third overall, but last in the demo. CW was fourth overall and tied for 3rd in the demo with FOX (which was last overall) on the strength of the soon to be off the CW and onto MyNetTV Friday Night Smackdown!
But I know what our fan base likely wants to hear about is Moonlight. It seems like forever since there was a new installment of Moonlight to write about and I’m sure a lot has happened in all our lives since then.
Moonlight pulled 7.99 million viewers and a 2.1/6 in the 18-49 demo. That was about a million lower than Ghost Whisperer (9.00 million and a 2.3/9) and 1.6 million lower than Numb3rs with 9.61 and a 2.2/7. While the 9pm hour always seems to lose from 8pm and then gain it back at 10pm, the size of the gap seems to be shrinking, which from the perspective of a Moonlight fan should be viewed as a good thing.
Sadly, it’s hard to really call much from the night “good news”, but nonetheless, Moonlight was the third most watched show of the entire night and likely won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot. I say “likely” only because I haven’t seen the hourly demo numbers for Dateline (it did a 1.9/6 in the demo from 9p-11p).
While Moonlight and the other CBS shows were more or less in line with their season averages, they were up against very weak competition on FOX and ABC (and NBC was very weak in the 8pm hour, as well). Still, this may just be the way Fridays are now.
Next week is a similar scenario with FOX running an old movie, ABC running Duel, NBC running Dateline and CW running Smackdown. On the surface, Moonlight looks poised to fare as well next week overall and in the demo as it did this week against the other broadcast network competition.
Given it was 3rd out of 10 shows and how bad the numbers were for everything NOT on CBS, I’d say overall with next week seemingly shaping up similarly that Moonlight’s “bubble” status at least improved a little. Hopefully for its loyal fans that is the case. Either way, I’m sure they were very glad to get a new episode and looking forward to next week..

That’s a great point, Bonnie — I should’ve picked up on that myself. Considering no new episodes for four+ months and only being back in the rotation as repeats the last couple of weeks there may well have been some out of sight, out of mind for all but the loyal and faithful fans.

Did anyone happen to notice that Moonlight was listed in TV guide as being a repeat (In the sacramento CA guide anyways). Don’t know if this had an impact, but it irritated me that I did not watch the new episode.

the company line for CW seems to be they didn’t renew Smackdown! because it could not be leveraged to promote the other CW shows targeted at young women.
I guess their logic was it is better to have a show with half the viewers (or less) that does promote those shows well.

I’ve never watched an episode of Moonlight but the fans responses make me curious. Is it anything like Angel or New Amsterdam? If so I’ll steer clear because those 2 shows really rubbed me the wrong way. The only other show I watched because of fans response is TSCC and that show really delivered and made a new fan…me.

Please watch Moonlight. It is not only a show about vampires, it is also a show with romance and action. It certainly helps that it stars the handsome and talented, Alex O’Loughlin. I am so relieved to see that Moonlight at least held up it’s numbers & won the timeslot. I hope with continued promotion by CBS (not just on Friday night) the numbers will improve. I think part of the problem with the ratings is due to the fact that it was listed incorrectly in TV Guide and also, that many people don’t want to get involved with a show that may only have 3 or 4 more episodes and by being in the traditional death timeslot. I believe we’ll have many new viewers next season when they know they have a season ahead of them.
For those that ask about Moonlight being like Angel or New Amsterdam, ML has little in common with either show. It is so much more than just a vampire show. Never watched Angel. Gave NA (nothing to do with vampires at all) a try & couldn’t get interested. Yes, ML has a vampire detective but that’s about it. No demons or monsters. ML vampires live in our world and walk among us. You would never know who they are. It’s a richly shot show with the best cast with the most chemistry I’ve ever seen. There is nothing on TV to compare to the MickBeth romance. There’s plenty of action for those that crave action. A lot of drama and enough humor to lighten the mood and romance – ahhhh, the romance!
Alex O’Loughlin is simply the most talented, hottest actor I have had the pleasure to watch. As some have said, his eyes should have an award’s category of their own. He can do more with a look or subtle change of expression than any actor I’ve seen.
I think you owe yourself the treat of watching Moonlight. Give yourself permission to like it and I think you’ll be very pleasantly surprised. It’s a rare gem in a bleak television landscape.

I have a question about the ratings. On April 11th, CBS had a new episode of Ghost Whisper at 8 and Numb3rs at 10 with Price is Right in Moonlight’s time slot. GW was down from its usual ratings [over 9 million] at 8.74 million viewers with a 2.5/9 in the 18-49 rating share, and Numb3rs was also off [usually over 10 million] at 9.59 million viewers with 2.3/7. Price is Right was 8.15 with 2.17. The overall total viewers on 4/11 were 8.83.
This week, 4/25, GW was back up to 9 with a 2.3/9 share, Moonlight was at 7.99 with a 2.1/6 share [just 1 digit off of Price is Right's share on 4/11] and Numb3rs was at 9.61 with a 2.2/7. So, in short both GW and Numb3rs ratings were higher this week than on 4/11 although their share numbers were slightly lower. Also all three shows ratings were lower than they were back in January with Moonlight’s episode 12 originally aired. Thus the fact ML is down this week reflects all 3 shows being down, not just ML.
So isn’t ths good news for Moonlight? And isn’t it possible that while there is always a dip in the 9 p.m. time slot between the shows which goes back up at 10 that Moonlight at 9 is positively affecting GW’s numbers, at least? I know someone wrote [not here] that they never heard of a second show affecting a lead-in show but I do know for a fact that a lot of Moonlight fans were turning off their TVs when ML was off the air which, if any fans were Nielsen viewers, affected ratings. Secondly, that a number of ML fans have posted on fan boards that they never watched either GW or Numb3rs before Moonlight, but because they were catching the end and the beginning of those shows, they checked them out and now watch one or the other or both along with Moonlight. In short, there are more viewers tuning into see GW when ML is on because some of them are ML fans who won’t watch CBS on Friday if ML is not on.
Hope this makes sensse but I’d appreciate it if someone more familiar with ratings could say if CBS would view the overall picture of whether GW’s number might be slightly higher — even with the dip between GW and ML — when ML is on, and GW’s number are lower when ML is not on. Also that all 3 shows had lower ratings than in January, not just that ML was down?

I would like to adress this post to the people who told me Moonlight is better than New Amsterdam and Angel. You guys were right. I breezed through the episodes and enjoyed it. New Amsterdam had the same effect of sleeping pills and Angel was just lame but this is entertaining. Strange to see such a low demo numbers for a show that is clearly intended for young people. Although TSCC is still my number 1 show I will definetely follow this show too.
