Poor Neil Patrick Harris. He wanted to just say no to Britney, then after the people who paid him slapped him silly, he was right as rain with a Britney appearance (”In fact, we are all hoping that she returns rather soon to reprise her role!”) and now the appearance has been confirmed.
According to TV Guide Ms. Spears will be back on How I Met Your Mother on the May 12th airing.
She may be a train wreck, but she was very good for Mother’s ratings. Neil Patrick Harris: CBS doesn’t care what you think! What you think doesn’t matter! Ratings still do. Sorry, pal.
We imagine for whatever CBS is paying her for an extra ratings point plus in the 18-49 demographic, she doesn’t much care what Mr. Harris thinks either.
I care what Harris thinks, though, and I’m glad he spoke up. It was refreshing — while it lasted — to see that everyone involved with the series didn’t feel it necessary to kiss up to Spears and her camp.
Still, I don’t mind Spears returning for another episode since she did a passable job before. I’m cool as long as she doesn’t become a regular presence, which is when I’d bid the show goodbye without a second thought.
