ABC won the first Sunday night of the May sweeps — even though it’s still April — and along with its Thursday performance [looks like all networks threw in the towel for Friday and Saturday] should be in the sweeps lead, at least in the all important 18-49 demo. On Thursday all networks were down vs. last year other than FOX, which was up. For Sunday FOX and ABC should be fairly consistent overall versus last year with CBS getting somewhat pummeled year over year.
NBC must’ve had its most pathetic Sunday night sweeps EVER. I’ll just let you look at the numbers – it averaged only a 1.3/4 in the 18-49 demo for the night. Need I say more? Actually, last year NBC ran with Dateline and a Movie of the Week. It was already getting pummeled, but this year is worse.
Desperate Housewives easily won the 9pm slot though it was down almost a million viewers [960,000] versus last year, and down about 15% vs. last year in the 18-49 demo. Still, Extreme: Makeover: Home Edition in the 8pm slot and Brothers & Sisters in the 10pm slot did a bit better than they did last year.
In some ways it was already clear that CBS had somewhat thrown in the towel, but at least last night’s airing of Big Brother was the season finale. While BB was no ratings juggernaut, its ratings were very consistent. A re-airing of Showtime’s Dexter also is performing consistently for CBS, but these cable offerings aren’t setting the world on fire. Still, Dexter outperformed Monk & Psych on NBC and significantly so in the 18-49 demo.
FOX got pretty good performances from its animation block which were pretty consistent with last year for the most part. Even last year Family Guy was already doing better than The Simpsons in the 18-49 demo, though we know that the 9pm Sunday slot is better than the 8pm slot due to Daylight Savings Time. This year Family Guy pulled a 4.3/10 in the demo versus The Simpson’s 3.6/10. Good demo numbers for both shows. Even King of the Hill and American Dad are getting 3.0s in the demo. Something NBC would absolutely kill for.
What can I say about the CW? A repeat of Girlfriends was its best airing. Can we be far from Gossip Girl encore Sundays?

Yep, Tony Parker stole my woman, and I’m bitter over it.
Deal with it!
But yes, it was off its all-time lows. And let’s face it, adjusted for “these days”, it’s a powerhouse, especially in the demo.

Wow… Manic Monday here at TVBTN???
I was more impressed with the 18/49 and Share numbers for Simpsons and FamGuy in relation to their total viewer numbers and compared to other shows with many more viewers.
Also… Bros & Sis brought out more viewers than I’ve seen in awhile for a late Sunday Night.
Can you guess which three shows I have on my TVBS network this week?
p.s. – DHW has ‘jumped the shark’ I’m afraid… it’s all downhill from here.

My personal views are 100% aligned with Josh above. DH isn’t what it used to be, but that’s still good.
Jon V., shame on you for fanning the fire!

That’s why I ‘couched’ the comment in ’shark’ terms.
I stopped watching… couldn’t take it anymore when they all turned into a bunch of Hollywood divas.

Wow,
Great numbers for Family Guy. They pulled the 2nd best ratings in the Age 18-49 demo for the entire night.

This is a nice week for discussions. However, sweeps start on Wednesday and then the true battles will begin.

I think Sweeps started yesterday… even though it’s not May yet.

Hey, you’re right! I keep overestimating the intelligence of the networks

This year’s May sweeps = April 24-May 21. They started last *Thursday*. If you’re just skimming the posts, I won’t fault anyone — I’m a chronic skimmer myself. But if it’s a lack of trust: c’mon!

I’m very embarrassed by the whole thing. I guess I just can’t believe networks would run cable reruns on a Sunday night during sweeps.

Daniel, in the overnight results post for Thursday, I offered up that I don’t think sweeps really matter as much anymore and trying to win them is probably as meaningful as trying to win the Pro Bowl.
NBC is perhaps a little TOO aligned with my thinking though…

Certain shows symbolize different things for different people. The old half-kidding another sign of the apocalypse, or sign of SOS or something. Personally, I like DH far more than I could ever like Grey’s, Private Practice etc because and I don’t care how often I say it: It does not gratuitously male bash and set up the new double standard. The 40/50 male/female split shows that. The women are sexy but not objectified. The men are not objectified on DH as they are on every other show on ABC. It is a nice, entertaining, middle of the road crowd-pleaser with true crime and mystery elements. It also broke the ground for its imitators.

Robert,
My understanding was the purpose of ratings was to measure audience in order to set advertising rates and the sweeps were the times when these rates were set for that quarter. Is it your understanding that this is not longer the case?

Daniel, my understanding is that advertisers don’t put a lot of stock in sweeps numbers at this point, especially with such a large portion of the ads being sold via upfronts where they’re more or less locking in rates for ratings points up front.
It’s an industry riddled with legacy thinking, including “bragging rights,” even though there’s not much to brag about these days…

Ditto Robert’s point about it not being entirely clear how much “sweeps” effect national advertising.
Sweeps periods are times when Nielsen diaries are used in all 210 US markets. Normally just the 56 people meter markets are measured. Those diaries help set local ad rates in the non-people meter markets.

Wait, Aliens in America was new last night? I looked on my cable guide last night and it didn’t even say Aliens in America was on last night. My DVR didn’t record it either. I had no idea either. Not that it would help it that much. The ratings are astoundingly bad even for the CW…

As a Monk/Psych fan, I don’t think NBC has done those shows justice by bringing them over for reruns. I was hoping they were going to have new eps. No wonder ratings are bad.
