Nielsen Ratings Mon Apr 28: Youth Favors FOX’s House

Posted on 29 April 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard for Mon. April 28, 2008 ABC FOX CBS NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 13.68 12.10 11.24 9.80 2.51
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.7/9 4.4/11 3.9/10 2.9/7 1.2/3

What a difference a week makes. House was back and led FOX to a win in the first Monday night of May sweeps in the 18-49 demographic. Yes, I know, it’s still April, blame Nielsen! This year’s May sweeps runs from April 24-May 21. ABC led the night in terms of overall viewers, but was 3rd in the 18-49 demographic. CBS was third in viewers, but second in the demo.

Dancing With the Stars was the most watched show of the evening with almost 18 million viewers and performed solidly in the demo with a 4.7/11. Samantha Who? has numbers which look really good, but DWTS with its scandalous judges apparently picking on injured people ran significantly into the 9:30 half hour, so Samantha’s numbers will be adjusted downward in the finals.

FOX ran with new airings of Bones and House, and House scored a 5.7/13 in the 18-49 demographic in the overnights, the best performance of the night.

The Big Bang Theory is still the weakest link of the CBS Monday lineup, but still did a 3.0/9 in the demo in the “troubled during spring” 8pm slot. How I met Your Mother is getting Britney back, but performed well in the demo without her (3.8/10). As usual, CBS got its best 18-49 performance with Two and a Half Men (4.7/11), but Rules of Engagement held a lot of it with a 3.9/9 in the demo. CSI: Miami won its timeslot with 13.6 million viewers and a 3.9/10, but that’s fallen from 17.03m and a 5.2/14 on April 30, 2007. While there are many more DVRs in the panel than there were a year ago, it can’t account for all of it. CSI: Miami typically has around 1.5 million DVR viewers who watch after the night the show aired.

NBC finished last not counting the CW, but in fairness, both Deal or No Deal and Medium have performed very consistently and Medium does have many DVR fans, typically over a million who don’t watch it on Monday nights are added back in. It had a 3.1/8 in the demo even without them.

Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill had very similar numbers that were in line with last week, but without the female demographic info, it’s probably not worth opining on. We predict from a Nielsen perspective, MTV’s The Hills will perform better.

  9. Ron says:

Will you stop picking on The Big Bang Theory every week with this weakest link crap. When How I Met Your Mother was on at 8:00 it was the weakest link. That is how CBS Monday nights work. The 8:00 show is always the weakest, and especially during daylight savings time. If we swapped BBT and HIMYM time slots back again than HIMYM would be the weakest link and BBT would have higher ratings. Stop picking on BBT it it is doing fine. Did you see its ratings compared to other 8:00 sitcoms like My Name is Earl (6 million viewers) or Til Death (under 6 million). Stop picking on BBT every week. It is the weakest link, because CBS gave it the 8:00 time slot. Whichever show is at 8:00 will be the lowest rated. That is the way it works.

I still can’t belive they haven’t renewed HIMYM yet. I agree about the time slot being better than 8pm, but BBT is already renewed. Put either one of those shows on at 9:30 and they might start beating Two and a Half Men in a couple of years.

  33. Gusar says:

@Rob: I’m willing to bet quite a bit that CBS will definitely renew HIMYM, but for some reason don’t see the need to announce it before the upfronts. With Britney or without, it’s doing too well to let it go.

    And yeah, more Summer!! :)

Went back to watch House today on the old DVR and… BLACK SCREEN. Boy am I hot… if anyone knows where or when I can see this ep, please let me know.

TBBT is awesome last night with all of the allusions to The Time Machine… if you missed it, find away to see this one.

Samantha Who had great numbers (prob because the previous two eps were really good more than last night being great). Still, it’s good to see this show doing well because it has really come back well from the strike with more emphasis on going forward than ‘not’ remembering the past.

Thanx, Dave. I didn’t realize that Hulu got ‘em that quick.

    RE: Samantha Who…

Meant to mention that when I switched over to catch the start during a ROE commercial, I found the end of DWTS with Dolphin, Jason Taylor, dancing up a storm (I don’t watch… but that was pretty good).

I’m sure that 8 minute carry-over had a lot to do with Samantha’s numbers – I’ll be interested in seeing the 15 minute breakdown on that show when you guys see it. It’s an anomaly worth looking at.

  51. won’t likely see the 15 minute detail, but the final numbers for Samanth Who?:

    3.1/7 in 18-49, 9.87m from 9:38 to 10:08 p.m

So a little less than a 3 million fall off.

Also, in the finals OTH had a few more viewers than GG (2.57m to 2.53m). I didn’t see any of the gender/age breakouts but OTH competed against House this week so no surprise it is down a little.
