WWE RAW, NFL Draft, NBA Playoffs and House Lead Nielsen Weekly Cable Viewing

Posted on 29 April 2008 by Robert Seidman

house-and-wilson.jpgThe NFL draft got the most households, but more people gather around each screen for WWE RAW which took the week.  The power of WWE does blow my mind a bit.  One of the reasons I first thought about “I wish there was a blog that aggregated all the TV ratings” was seeing that last year the NFL draft came in second only to The Sopranos though that too was likely in terms of household rating.   The draft still held up this year, HBO not so much.

Last Tuesday’s Suns/Spurs game on TNT drew TNT its best basketball ratings so far with over 4.4 million.  The Hornets/Mavericks game  on Sunday also made the top 20 with over 3.7 million.  TNT placed three other games in the overall top 40.   Another Spurs/Suns game, this time on ESPN last Friday was the second most watched NBA playoff game on cable for the week with almost 3.9 million viewers at #7 on the list.

A House mini-marathon pulled great numbers for USA taking the 5th, 6th, 9th and 11th spots on the list.   MTV’s The Hills rounded out the top 10 with 3.75 million viewers.

Even with the NBA games, the NFL draft and a surge of House viewing, the porous and yellow SpongeBob still snagged 7 spots in the top 20 and eighteen out of the top forty spots.

Disney made the top 20 (#16) with an airing of the classic Finding Nemo - the only Disney show in the top 40 this week.  In addition to SpongeBob, NICK placed Zoey 101 at number 17 and had two episodes of iCarly make the top 40 as well as two episodes of Mighty B!  and one episode of Back at the Barnyard. USA also placed one airing of Law & Order: SVU in the top 40.

I too a am in awe of WWE’s continued popularity. Numbers don’t lie; how many closet wrestling fans do you know? There are more people watching wrestling than it seems willing to admit it.

Seriously, using anecdotal evidence would you believe raw is more popular than gossip girl?

WWE is the most watched show each week. Thats amazing I am a big WWE fan. On another note where is the shows from BET coming in.

  12. Robert Seidman says:

Spechelle, unless the shows from BET place in the top 40, we don’t see the individual shows and it isn’t typically among the weekly top 30 cable networks we have access to:

it’s amazing just how many people watch WWE. I will be walking down the street, and I will see about 10 different people wearing a different WWE shirt. It’s just amazing.
