First Night Of Clinton Interview Boosts O’Reilly

Long Term Trend of O’Reilly vs. Olbermann TV Ratings:
![]()
I decided to change the charts from line charts to scatter charts and add a linear trend-line in the long term chart. The short term chart just didn’t work as a line chart because of the 2 off days / week, and for the long term chart I didn’t think the day to day lines added anything. I am, as always, open to suggestion.

Why do you call this the “8PM Cable News Battle”? This is no battle. It’s not even a contest. It’s a blowout. A nightly blowout. At what point does MSNBC say uncle? Do we need to see Keith’s brains splattered on the screen? We see his unhealthy sexual obsession with Mr. O’Reily and his insecurity with Fox news! For the love of God, show some humanity, and start comparing KO with the other time slot bottom feeders! Give the poor man something to feel good about! Please!

Thanks, Bill for the update / changes
Apparently there are many who find it amazing that NBC/MSNBC continues to tout Olbermann as a real reporter and continues to have him co-anchor the political primary coverage.
It would seem that the haters of FOX would be totally disarmed in their complaints. Imagine the outcry if BO or “comedian” Limbaugh were to sit in such a chair on election night for any news network!
Still, the marketplace rules and as long as KO continues to pull in his lefty-fringe, that network seems to be satisfied.
It must be sad for Tom Brokaw, et al.

Larry, c’mon! Actually all April 30 says is that Hillary Clinton is the best thing ever to happen to Bill O’Reilly’s ratings this year. Best #s of 2008 for BO!

2 Million 7 hundred thousand more people watched BO over KO ! KO needs to call his show KnockedDown (Outcold) not CountDown anymore. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. I’m gonna miss his Groucho Marx eyebrows.

Robert – What is the best thing that happened to KO ? Look at KO’s ratings from November 2007. BOR didn’t need the boost. “Best thing ever happen” to BO ? BO x KO’s by 3 times. Period. KO is so A..Hole about Bill. KO named him the “worst person in the world” for the Clinton interview.

“Countdown” on every level.

Daniel C, there’s a lot I could add, but I think this chart’s already a bit crowded, at least the long term one.
The aggregate cable news network chart does show all 5 networks average primetime ratings, and honestly it’s much more crowded than I’d like it to be.
When we started the site, I did daily posts of cable news ratings with tons of detail. They were very pretty, but a ton of work, and they got very little traffic. As with many things, efficient trumped pretty.

Bill:
I guess I just don’t see where the numbers show anything but that Factor demolishes Countdown nightly. My question becomes, is Countdown 2nd, 3rd or 4th. I understand that conversation is nice, but I thought this was TV By the Numbers, not by political affiliation.

Daniel, I do hear you, and honestly the politics of the situation is entirely moot to me. Back in August when we started, I was surprised at the heat behind the rivalry.
Let me play around a bit, what I may do starting next week is abandon the average viewer numbers in order to add the 25-54 numbers for all the 8pm shows. Because the fact is for 25-54 (which is what our industry friends universally say they care about) the race is noticeably tighter.
And maybe the long term charts just go away except for special updates.

What I find interesting about April 30th, is that Bill O’Reily’s 25-54 age demographic nearly equaled that of KO’s entire audience for that night.
KO is just a bitter, bitter man who is obsessed with O’Reily. Worst Person in the World, for what? For continually beating you week after week after week. One can only imagine what KO’s final broadcast will be like, if and when MSNBC finally realizes he’s nothing but poison for them.

The demo ratings are seem to actually be very close, but KO’s numbers will take a fall when Bush is no longer president.(Unless clinton gets elected, but that will probably be just as good for o’reily as olberman)People watch KO to watch him bash Bush.

The Spin Zone was introduced to me via Olbermann’s rants. I’ve since found other’s went the same route in order to understand why all the attention to someone on another network. So,the more O’R is used as a part of MSNBC’s Countdown, the more watchers will check to see why Spin Zone deserves all the free time on another network. FOX should thank Olbermann for some of their numbers. Keep ‘em comin’. No one with skill would promote another network on his own time. Inferior thinking.

Excellent point, Mary;
One has to conclude that it must be a matter of jealousy to be so obsessed by a rival – Or KO’s self-hate and insecurite. KO must go home and watch the rerun of BO every night.
KO really needs to get a life. Anyone that angry and bitter has issues and needs a rest or some major counseling.

I think it’s funny when KO does a verbal smackdown on BillO. He says what so many other people truly think and does it on air in front a million people. Then BillO replies with attacks on GE and MSNBC (ususally far fetched or outright wrong). But refuses to mention Olbermann, because BillO is a coward and can’t go toe to toe with the man.

I agree with Scooby. KO is verbalizing what many, many people think of Billo. I watch Billo sometimes just to hear the stupid things that come out of his mouth. I don’t think there is one iota of jealousy, insecurity, or obsession that Keith has for Billo. I think Keith is just doing an excellent of pointing out what a douchebag Billo is.

O’Reilly blows Olbermann out in total viewership. However, in the key demographic that advertisers pay attention to, the 25-54 age group is a win for O’Reilly but not by as much.
Total Viewers about 2.6 to 1 for O’Reilly
24-54 Group about 1.6 to 1 for O’Reilly

More ratings, same comments. Those predicting the demise of KO obviously don’t follow the ratings, because he is far and away the top rated series on MSNBC. He’s almost doubled his audience over the past year. Regardless of how far back he is of BOR, MSNBC is making a killing on his show, and that’s all that matters to them.
Both seem to be increasing their audience now as the lead-up to the election dawns, but those numbers will fall of afterwards.

KO is the best thing to happen to MSNBC. that vocal 21% of the country which wants the sort of stuff on FOX are already there (though less are showing up each month)
meanwhile MSNBC replaced tucker carlson, a pox new’s style coolaid drinker/talking points spouter/faux outrage pretender with dan abrahms and the ratings went WAY up.
MSNBC is the future. as more and more of the other 79% of this country begins to wake up and shake off the distractions, fox will become increasingly marginalized.
thanks for the ratings. this site is very well done.

In all his time on air has BO ever even said the name Keith Olbermann? I think if he has’nt then it must be because of Keith’s inability as a true journalist. Kind of like comparing apples and oranges. I think sense Bo’s so far above him he should at least ask a light weight conservative on his show, that way he may add some sort of credibilty to his show. Why not try? That would boost his ratings at least.

okay all you defenders of Olbermann….
Please explain: Why such outrage the prompted his “Special Comment” against Hillary for not cutting up Geraldine F. when the very next night this Jeremiah Wright thing broke and KO gets all exercised about those willing to throw Oboma under the bus.
The same week KO’s selective outrage against John McCain over that preacher Haggee’s remarks
(who McCain barely knew), but he isn’t the slightest disturbed about Oboma’s own pastor of 20 years spewing his hate?
Olbermann’s loyalists must follow him for the intertainment of watching his carnaval, they can’t be loyalists because they think he is such an outstanding “reporter” of real news.
He is so in the tank for Oboma and his followers don’t have the slightest clue about that.

Jim- Obama’s running for president, not his pastor. I agree that Keith is quite a bit biased in favor of Obama but at least he doesn’t try to fool anybody into thinking he’s not by repeatingly bashing you over the head with “fair and balanced”. The entire network at Faux News is far from that. I don’t understand some of the outrage expressed towards Keith? He’s just the opposite of Billo. and as I previously stated it brings out the same kind of reaction from his fans that Billo would have himself; name calling and threats. Nobody’s perfect including Keith but come one. Bill O’reilly’s character that he plays on TV is ugly. And I don’t mean physically. He’s just a jerk. Yeah he has people on with differing opinions but he yells over them and at them. O’reilly is the stereotype of why most of the rest of the planet hate Americans.

remember Herr Olbermann is persona non grata at ESPN ,a former employer. also remember what Bob Costas said about Herr Olbermann “everytime I see Olbermann on TV I know a fast food manager is missing somewhere” the big question is. What if Hillary gets the Dem. nod? What will MNBC do? Will Chris still get chills up his leg when Barack speaks?

define credibility jim gibson. BO is constantly debunked. he constantly contridicts himself. He is an industry joke. KO on the other hand, actually has to uphold standards (or are we going to pretend that pox news is anything but a modern propaganda outfit? really? the president is never wrong?)
if KO made one single mistake, the entire satanic “right wing” would be all over him with their child-like slogan/insults and marching orders.
the gop leadership masters (the super rich) play you folks like violins. unless you make in excess of 700k a year, the tax cuts arent going to help you. socialized medicine? seems to work for congress.
so while you wear your lapel pin made in china because your president never met a dictator or unfair trade policy he never met, our soldiers are dying so halliburton and the other contractors can continue to wallow in our tax dollars. KO at least has the balls to tell the truth. KO, on the other hand is nothing more than a modern day father coughlin. i dont hate you like you hate me (i’m sure jesus loves the hate!) because i am worried about our society. so keep being played like a bunch of violins while the bad politicians (GOP AND DEM BOTH!) continue to run amok with our hard earned cash. fools
