It’s Official: CBS Passes on Moonlight

Posted on 13 May 2008 by Robert Seidman

Moonlight’s Sophia MylesSorry Moonlight fans. I know many of you will be devastated. But Variety and others are reporting that it’s official, Moonlight has been cancelled. My take, as I’ve said earlier is that this show was “right on” the bubble, and I wouldn’t have thought CBS crazy for picking it back up, but nor would I have thought them insane to cancel it either. While it performed well in its return the last few weeks, and remarkably held most of its viewers after a long hiatus in original episodes, it wasn’t a great performer in the 18-49 demographic (not that anything on broadcast is on Friday nights) and it always had fewer viewers than its lead-in Ghost Whisperer and it’s lead-out, Numb3rs.

Realistically, I can’t fault CBS for at least trying to find a show that will do as well as GW and Numb3rs for the 9pm slot. I do feel bad for the fans, but I also can understand why CBS would want to try something else.

Still, I do understand for the very fervent fan base, this is a really bad day for you. Hang in there!

Update 7:00PM PDT: Deadline Hollywood is reporting there is a slight chance of a maybe, possibly could be, but just a chance that MRC who will now program Sunday night’s for the CW will take Moonlight for Sunday night. Update, 9PM PDT: Slight, indeed, TVWeek has the preliminary CW/MRC Sunday Night and it doesn’t include Moonlight.

Ouch! I think some people are gonna raise a little hell!

  2. Leeser please e-mail the info on MoonlightCon…

  3. Julia says:

Katarzyna, in addition to what Robert has said, this show is through WB. The studio makes most of the money off DVD sales and syndication overseas. CBS has very little to gain from that, even if it sold more DVDs than any other CBS program. (Though if that were the case, WB would definitely find a new home for it.)

  4. WHOLETRUTHY says:

bad week for the immortals with New Amsterdam also biting the big one

sad news. I was rootin for you moonlight fans.

  9. Debbie says:

What a sad day for all Moonlight fans. You would think a show with 8 million viewers would get a second season to prove its self. Typical CBS!

  10. Julia says:

Danielle, I actually wanted it to end because of Jason Dohring. Now he can get on a show that I actually can watch!

  11. Steve says:

Maybe we could take a hint from Jericho and send CBS 20,000 pints of blood…lol

i dont appreciate, the fact i am over 49,,,,,and your rule out all the people
who stay home and watch tv,,,,,especially on the weekends,,,,there are hundreds of reasons for this age group to be out of the house,,,sports, dating,,,,dinner,,,,
commuting,,,,,where most older than this are mostly home,,,,,so i think all your watchers numbers are wrong,,,,,,

  15. Cathy says:

It was an interesting show with an engaging cast. This is a bad decision. Perhaps it will move to another network or online.

  16. observer says:

    too bad; you keep it up and dropping the good ones you keep losing out;

  17. Steinmiller says:

CBS cancelled 3 out of the 4 shows I watch on their network:

    Moonlight
    Shark
    Cane

I am done with them as a viewer.

  18. Caitlin says:

Myself being one of those. CBS is banned for myself and many of the people in my community until CBS reconsiders their decision on Moonlight. They are going to go through hell now that they canceled Moonlight.

  19. Steinmiller says:

Its one thing to cancel a show for poor ratings but Moonlight was winning its timeslot each & every week based on the information I read, just another case of a network not caring about the fans and only worrying about money.

  20. Donna says:

CBS canceled Moonlight and lost me as a viewer.

  21. BECKY says:

u can not take moonlight away that is CRAZY!!!!!!!

  22. Malaron says:

Well CBS truly made a mistake, they should have sent it over to the CW or another affiliate. It is a great show and last nights series finale was absolutely awesome. Wow, Wow, and triple WOW!!!

  23. ML says:

Stupid CBS and their quest for money. Moonlight needs to pull a Firefly!

  24. aftonstjarnan says:

    It is SO on!

  25. Mollie says:

    Dear ML,
I loved Firefly too! You are so right “Moonlight needs to pull a Firefly!” I hope they do. :)

  26. Chris says:

    I LOVE MOONLIGHT!
Please give it another chance! I am so sad :(

  27. Guess Who says:

If Dr. McCoy from Star Trek were still alive he would say…. “Moonlight? Its dead, Jim…”

  28. Justine says:

This sucks just when the start to get decent shows on TV they take it off. I am surprised TV still exists.

  29. LAURIE says:

PLEASE DO NOT CANCEL MOONLIGHT. IT IS THE BRIGHT SPOT OF MY WEEKEND. PLEASE KEEP IT

  30. LeslieAnne says:

CBS (C-an't B-e S-erious) has proven is does not care about it's viewers. Cancelling Moonlight with over 8 million viewers each week seems like a “bonehead” move. The replacement The Ex-List is an insult to any intelligent woman. That along with the new show Swingtown…a show set in the 70s (like we want to go back there?) that promotes swinging/cheating on spouses and partaking of illegal drugs. (and I saw all of this in a clip less than a minute long!) I think CBS is making one bad decision after another and I feel sorry for their advertisers. I think they will lose money all the way around! I know they won't get any of mine.

  31. Anna says:

CBS made an unwise decision. Never have I been disappointed. Moonlight was a great show, and it had talented actors:Alex O Loughlin, Jason Dohring are great actors! I'm 30 years old and absolutely am saddened by CBS's decision. This new show that is replacing Moonlight is so boring. I don't care about someone else's love life. I mean I get hear about it at work or my friends can talk about their failed love life. I don't need a show to tell me this. Ex List is EXED from my list. No more CBS for me!!

  32. Cara says:

This is just more proof that the Power of the People can't compete with the Mighty Buck.

  33. Martha says:

Poor Planning on CBS's part!! Lost me.

  34. cecelia86 says:

I enjoyed Moonlight more than Numb3rs and way more than Ghostwhisperer. Part of what I preferred about Moonlight was that there was a continuing aspect to the show that would keep you coming back, but each show was fun by itself. Ghostwhisperer doesn't leave anything for the viewer to figure out. Numb3rs is much the same. What's more, the romance is so much hotter in Moonlight.

  35. StormyGoddess says:

I'm buying at least 3 copies of the dvd set. CBS was so stupid to cancel the show.

  36. Denise says:

I can’t believe this great show has been cancelled! I am so SICK of reality TV. Frankly I’m pretty tired of most TV. It’s no longer entertaining. There are so few shows on that are worth watching. I was really enjoying a show that was a fantasy. Moonlight was very well done, what a MISTAKE CBS!!!
