Nielsen Ratings May 12: FOX’s ‘House’ Most Watched Among Youth

Posted on 13 May 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard for Mon. May 12, 2008 ABC FOX CBS NBC CW
Total Viewers (million) 14.04 12.13 11.44 6.14 2.65
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 3.7/10 4.5/12 4.0/10 2.2/6 1.2/3

First, I may move to completely stop reporting NBC and the CW except on Thursday nights. At this point there is a “big 3″ made up of ABC, CBS, and FOX. NBC is every bit the also ran ratings-wise that the CW is, and given how far it fell it should be ashamed of itself! Shame on you peacocks! There are cable channels that outperformed The CW AND NBC during primetime last night.

ABC had the most viewers, but was third in the 18-49 demographic. FOX which was second overall was first among 18-49 year olds. CBS was third in overall viewing and second in the 18-49 demo.

Dancing with the Stars averaged 18.27m and a 4.2/11 in the demo. Samantha Who?, the only returning comedy from ABC (no “According to Jim”, yay! spoke to soon, ATJ will be back as a mid-season replacement…) dipped to 11.02m and a 3.2/8 in the demo and will dip even further in the final numbers due to DWTS overrun. Surprisingly The Bachelor had better demo results than Samantha Who? in its finale with a 3.3/8.

CBS had a typical performance out of its Monday night lineup. Britney was back on How I met Your Mother, and while Mother improved versus last week’s overnight numbers (8.35m and a 3.5/10 last week to 9.02m, 3.8/10 this week) it wasn’t the bump Ms. Spears brought the first time around. Still, with no Summer Glau to be found I am developing a small crush on Britney. I’ve always had a thing for self-destructive women, what can I tell you? Mother has been renewed and I expect we haven’t seen the last of Britney on CBS. As usual, Two and a Half Men led CBS for the night with 13.7m and a 5.0/12 in the demographic. And of course, CSI: Miami won the 10pm slot.

9pm Mondays may now be the most watched hour of broadcast television among 18-49 year olds – at least the 9p-9:30p portion. But it was FOX’s House that stood above all others when it comes to youthful viewers. House drew 14.84 million overall and a 5.8/14 in the 18-49 demographic. That was up quite a bit from last week’s 13.26m and a 5.0/13 in the demo. I’m holding off until next week and watching both parts of the season finale at once.

It’s hard to show any love for the CW and NBC, but here it is: Gossip Girl had one of its best (if not the best) performances since returning from hiatus with 2.64m and a 1.2/3 in the demo. One Tree Hill scored almost identical numbers with 2.65m and a 1.2/3. Though I didn’t see the numbers for Univision’s Fuego En La Sangre, I’m sure it again whipped Gossip Girl!

Props to Medium, the only nice thing I can say about NBC. Even though it was down slightly from last week with 8.57m and a 2.9/8 in the demo. It will likely pick them back up via DVR where it’s typically strong. American Gladiators? I’d rather talk about WWE RAW as I’m sure more people watched it. :-)

  1. Mark says:

guess it would help if NBC had anybody watching the network to find out Gladiators was coming on. I had no clue it was starting back up again already.

  2. enzo says:

Why is Jeff Zucker still employed and why is he so well espected by the suits at GE?

  3. because Zucker *is* a suit would be my guess!

  4. dan says:

I wonder if NBC would ever consider airing RAW during the summer. It will better numbers than AG and I doubt it would be that hard to make happen. USA is a NBCU channel and I hardly think WWE would object to being showcased on primetime network television.

  5. Kara says:

WOHOO!!! Gossip Girl went up 500 000 viewers… I frakin LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

  6. Guess Who says:

NBC stands for No Body Cares !
    CW stand for Crap Wastebasket

So by all means, stop mentioning them. LOL! NBC jumped the shark when it started airing American Gladiators.

  7. Guess Who says:

GE is too busy promoting the Global Warming fraud to pump up their sales of toxic CFL light bulbs and selling stuff to the Iranians to worry about the sucky ratings their shows get. Not to mention paying that goof Keith Olbermann to spout nonsense nightly on CNBC.

Hard to imagine how they could fall so far – I remember in the 80s when they ruled – the Thursday night block was one for the ages. All they have now are marginal shows and aging classics like ER (cant imagine why thats still on, it hasnt been good since Noah Wiley left)

  8. Tony says:

Mr Seidman, how could you go from Summer to Britney? It's like going from a classy talented lady to a two-bit dollar crackho. She can't even sing for God's sake and still she is the most popular singer. People like her and those other tabloid skanks are ruining Hollywood for me. Kudos to Neil Patrick Harris to speak his mind. Sorry for ranting.

  9. Tony, I didn't mean to besmirch Miss Glau in any way, she just hasn't been on the air in a while. As NEITHER of them is actually going to give me 5 seconds of their time, explaining further is not a worthwhile pursuit for me :-)

  10. Gusar says:

Hmm, there's talk of Summer, but no links. Let's fix that. :)

That said, I don't mind seeing Britney in HIMYM. Because it's not just a stupid “hey look, it's Britney” stunt, she's well integrated into the show. And dare I say it, she's sorta 'cute' in it.

  11. Elyk988 says:

I wonder how much longer Two and a Half Men will stay on the air? It has the numbers, but running out of stories to tell. Last night's episode was same old, same old humor.

  12. Bill Gorman says:

Elyk988, it doesn't have numbers, it has great numbers:

I'm not a viewer, but presumably the lack of material is a relative thing ;)

  13. Tony says:

My comment had nothing to do with Summer but all to do with Britney. I just can't imagine someone with an impeccable taste like you has a weakness for Britney. That was what I wanted to point out. But hey, everyone has their own taste and that's a good thing.
