Even in Hockeytown USA, NBA Reigns Supreme

Posted on 27 May 2008 by Robert Seidman

The local ratings are in and in the battle for Detroit eyeballs, the Detroit Pistons are winning. It really has been a head-to-head competition as the first two games of the Stanley Cup championship round featuring the Detroit Redwings and Pittsburgh Penguins have aired at nearly the exact same time as games 3 and 4 of the eastern conference finals in the NBA.

So here’s where things stand in the Motor City:

  • Saturday Game 3: Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons 11.5 local rating in Detroit
  • Saturday Game 1: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Redwings 7.8 local rating in Detroit

Things improved for both teams last night:

  • Monday Game 4: Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons 15.1 local rating in Detroit
  • Monday Game 2: Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Detroit Redwings 11.5 local rating in Detroit

My take is that the local ratings are pretty huge for both, with one in four household in Detroit watching one game or the other (and probably some of both) on Monday night.

did game 1 on vs. really get 2 million viewers? i cant remember hockey ever cracking 1 million in a game before when on oln/vs.

  2. Yep, Game 1 of Stanley cup got 2.32 million viewers nationwide.

  3. Hockey Rules says:

You have to look ALL the way back to this years eastern conference finals game between Pittsburgh and Philly – also did 2.3 million viewers on Versus….so definitely not a big surprise that the Stanley Cup final did as well. Additionally, the entire playoffs has averaged more then 1 million viewers for each game…

i have to imagine the american audience who can get cbc is fairly small. especially americans who have neilsen boxes who get cbc and watch it. id guess 1 person fits this bill.

  5. That's true overall, Kayarn, but this piece referenced the local ratings *in* Detroit. As Detroit is almost literally a stone's throw from Canada, I'm guessing the % of people there who can receive CBC there is quite high.

  6. Nathan says:

Yes most of Detroit gets CBC in Canada but I see ratings going way over Pistons. Mainly because listening to radio here it's all Wings.
