Fox Tops All Categories For 2007-8 Broadcast Season Sweep

A foregone conclusion for quite some time, Fox completed the prime-time broadcast network ratings sweep of all viewer categories for the 2007-8 season ending May 21, 2008.

Unlike past years when Fox had taken the youth age demographic category wins, but finished behind CBS for total viewers, this year Fox lead all categories.

CBS finished second in average viewers and adults 25-54, and third in adults 18-49 and 18-34 (but by only 120,000 over Univision).

ABC was third for average viewers and adults 25-54, and second in adults 18-49 (narrowly over CBS) and adults 18-34 (narrowly over NBC).

NBC was fourth for average viewers adults 18-49 and adults 25-54, and third (a bright spot?) for adults 18-34.

Univision was the real surprise of the season, challenging the English networks particularly strongly in adults 18-34.

CW, the network with seemingly more PR flaks than viewers, finished 6th across the board. Next year we’ll add MyNetworkTV to our charts and I expect a close race with CW for 6th.

Note that the broadcast prime-time season (and our data for the chart above) ended on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, not the typical Sunday ending for our previous season to date charts.

Whe was the last time a network led in all measures/categories?

  2. Bill Gorman says:

maury, christian, I am on the case, will have some data later today.

  3. Christian says:

I would never have imagined Fox ever taking the season crown in viewer numbers, let alone all key mesures!

  4. Bill Gorman says:

Maury & Christian, I have posted similar charts (with all our available data) for the broadcast seasons back to 1998.

    To answer your questions:

    1. For average viewers, CBS won the years 2002-2007, NBC won 2001-2, CBS 2000-2001, ABC 1999-2000, CBS 1998-1999.

    2. We only have a breakdown of the 3 age demos for the past 3 years (including this season). No network has won all four categories in that time except Fox this season. In the years for which we have just average viewers and adults 18-49, NBC won both in 2001-2 and ABC won both in 1999-2000.
