The night had mixed leadership with ABC winning the most viewers with a rerun of Finding Nemo and FOX winning the 18-49 demo with the classic Saturday night combo of Cops and America’s Most Wanted. I’m not really sure whether Cops and America’s Most Wanted were not reruns with these numbers but they weren’t reported as such. We probably won’t know for sure until Tuesday.
Moonlight fans will love that CBS came in dead stinking last with a sub 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demo with the airing of the made for TV movie Sybil, which was a remake of a made for TV miniseries based on a very successful book from my youth. The remake didn’t do so well, but to paraphrase Marc Berman, if CBS didn’t already think it stunk, they wouldn’t have aired it on what seems to be the Saturday night TV ghetto (and in June, to boot!).
The numbers are pretty ghastly, but I suppose one way of looking at it is that it was a fairly competitive night.
Though it didn’t air in primetime the preliminary metered-market overnight reports for the Belmont Stakes which saw 38-1 odds Da’Tara win in an upset where heavily favored Big Brown mysteriously finished (like CBS on Saturday) in dead last averaged a 10.5 HH rating. I never trust the overnight results for live sports events anymore but if those numbers anywhere near hold up that’s a huge (150+%) increase over last year’s race, a healthy chunk better than the Preakness Stakes and even a smidge above the Kentucky Derby.
I won’t be shocked if those numbers wind up holding up as I’m sure there were a lot of curious onlookers interested in seeing if a horse could win the triple crown for the first time in 30 years. Much like the perfect unblemished season in the NFL, it is elusive.

sybil got a great review from the hollywood reporter. cbs should have just sold it to lifetime or something. they would have promoted it. gotten 5 million viewers and emmy nominations.
Perhaps CBS should put Moonlight back on and they could watch their ratings go back up…
(LMAO!!!!!) IT LOOKS LIKE CBS IS DOING REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD. THINKING CANCELING MOONLIGHT WOULD MAKE THERE RATINGS AND VIEWING BETTER.
AS THE FAN SAID BRING BACK MOONLIGHT OR WE WILL GO SOMEWHERE ELSE
vampire solidarity,
rah rah rah!!!!!
i knew CBS made a huge mistake when they took off moonlight they are retarded to take it off it was there biggest hit and won its time slot on friday everyweek!!
So I Hope another network picks up moonlight cause us fans are ready to folow in with our troops!! (Troops AKA Moonlight Fans)
Emilee
Do you guys have a mailing list or something?
I was referring to the ML fans who seem to be invading the entire internet, not this site itself.
Doug, you can subscribe to the site via email or RSS using the box in at the top of the right most column.
Why yes, Mr. Seidman, it is safe to say that 8 million Moonlight fans knew this was coming for CBS after they cancelled our fantastic show. Thanks for the information!
Put Moonlight back on TV and the viewers will forgive and come running back, CBS…
omg! moonlight is done! please stop! its getting really annoying, no offence to anybody, but wen a show is cancelled, 99.9% of the time it doesnt come back. so while i liked moonlight alot, i realize cbs has future plans to make, and didnt find a place for moonlight in those plans, so sorry, to everyone who watched the show, but enough is enough!
YES!!!!!! Whoo Hoo!!!!
Moonlight reruns would have done better.
Katie,
Maybe, but not by much. Last year around this time, Numb3rs repeated on a Saturday with around 4 million viewers. Its summer Friday reruns were getting around 7 mill. Since Moonlight only averaged around 5 mill for in-slot, regular season reruns, it would have been hard-pressed to hit 3.5 on a Saturday in summer. While that would be marginally better than this movie did, CBS has a dozen shows that would get better ratings for a Saturday rerun.
Agreed 100%
Moonlight fans are alot like Jericho fans – highly motivated and devoted to their shows, but in the end, completely dillusional and out of touch with reality. I for one loved Jericho in its first season but the 2nd season was a ratings disaster due to its change in writers that ended up alienating much of its conservative fan base by turning Kansas into occupied Iraq – and it aint coming back ever, anywhere. Maybe they will do a book thing like The 4400 did, but thats about it. Moonlight has a remote chance of popping up as a movie on mini series on some place like SCI-FI for a 2nd chance. But Jericho already had its 2nd chance, their wont be a 3rd.
FOX beat CBS this season because they know what viewers want. CBS does not.
“FOX beat CBS this season because they know what viewers want. CBS does not.”
Yep, the Super Bowl and American Idol, neither of which were affected by the strike.
FOX also had the #1 drama series House and #1 New Drama Series in the 18-49 category, Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles. They also have Bones which will end up in the Top 20 next year. The Moment of Truth is also a stellar hit. CSI also lost to Desparate Housewives. CSI's losing viewers to Grey's Anatomy even though they beat Grey's Anatomy on that slot. None of CBS's new dramas returned. Moonlight should have though. The only thing that CBS can brag about is that they have #1 comedy on televison. Survivor only exists because it has no real competition like Friends. They win the Thursday @ 10 hour because ER lost a lot of viewers. The only show I watch on CBS is 60 Minutes.
