Nielsen Ratings June 9, 2008: Scripted Repeats Beat New Summer Reality

Posted on 10 June 2008 by Robert Seidman

Scoreboard for Mon. June 9, 2008 CBS FOX NBC ABC CW
Total Viewers (million) 8.14 7.66 6.26 5.58 .99
Rating/Share: Adults 18-49 2.5/7 2.4/7 2.1/6 2.0/6 0.4/1

Maybe that old girl — scripted television, is a hot cougar after all. CBS won the night with a lineup of mostly repeats of scripted comedies and dramas, save for the Bill Engvall Show (which notably had the worst 18-49 demo performance of any show on CBS last night — we’ll chalk some of that up to the 8pm start). FOX came in second with repeats of Bones and House.

In third place was NBC with a combination of American Gladiators and two hours worth of Nashville Star audtions. For its two hour premiere, “Star” averaged 6.58 million and a 2.2/6 in the 18-49 demo. Meanwhile, two hours worth of ABC’s The Bachelorette 6.39 million and 2.3/7 in the 18-49 demo, though it’s notable that the second hour averaged a million more viewers and half an 18-49 ratings point better than the first.

I’m sure ABC doesn’t have the intestinal fortitude to just cancel The Mole, and it probably should. I can’t believe I’m saying this but alas, two repeats of According to Jim just might do better. The Mole had but 3.97 million viewers and a 1.6/5 in the 18-49 demo. Ok, According to Jim probably wouldn’t have done better, but still, that’s pretty bad.

It’s somewhat a surprise to me how well the repeats hold up. The best performance of the night? Two and a Half Men with 10.5 million viewers and a 3.2/9 in the 18-49 demographic. In head-to-head competition with the first hour of the Nashville Star premiere, a repeat of House beat it easily garnering more than a million and half more viewers and six-tenths of a ratings point better in the 18-49 demo.

Why is THE MOLE still on? Shoot the mole and have it stuffed and mounted and be done with it.

Murkin Gladiators? Worse than the cheesy 80s version.

Nothing to watch Monday nights except House and Bones. Maybe they could merge the 2 shows and call it HOUSE OF BONES

  2. Holly says:

Given the quality of these reality shows, are we really surprised that more people want to watch reruns of scripted shows?

  3. Sam says:

how do you read the 18-49 Rating/Share

  4. Bill Gorman says:

Sam, the rating is the percentage of the total US TV owning adults 18-49 who watched the show, the share is the share of adults 18-49 watching TV during that period who watched the show. So, for the Mole 1.6% of all US TV adults 18-49 watched the show, and 5% of the adults 18-49 watching TV during that time period watched the show.

I wonder how America's Got Talent will do considering it was the top show last summer?!
